Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the western end of the Denali Park road, there are moose living on the tundra in September. . . . This area is special mainly because the moose live in the shadow of Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America. From the north side it is awe inspiring, rising up from the lowlands, snow covered yearlong for two-thirds of its height. In September on clear, blue-sky days, when the tundra is red and Mount McKinley forms the backdrop, this moose country has no equal. --Victor Van Ballenberghe Moose, the giant deer of the northern forests of Europe, Asia, and North America, can grow up to seven feet tall at the shoulder and exceed sixteen hundred pounds. Author and wildlife biologist Victor Van Ballenberghe has studied wild moose in the field for thirty-five years. The author gives insights into the species, their habitat, and predators and shares intimate stories about the moose he has studied for extensive periods. The beauty of these creatures, their strange grace and gentle nature, and their personalities are captured in lively text and dramatic full-color photos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century, Theodore Roosevelt, T. S. Van Dyke, and other elite men began describing their big-game hunting as “manly sport with the rifle.” They also began writing about their experiences, publishing hundreds of narratives of hunting and adventure in the popular press (and creating a new literary genre in the process). But why did so many of these big-game hunters publish? What was writing actually doing for them, and what did it do for readers? In exploring these questions, The Hunter Elite reveals new connections among hunting narratives, publishing, and the American conservation movement. Beginning in the 1880s these prolific hunter-writers told readers that big-game hunting was a test of self-restraint and “manly virtues,” and that it was not about violence. They also opposed their sportsmanlike hunting to the slaughtering of game by British imperialists, even as they hunted across North America and throughout the British Empire. Their references to Americanism and manliness appealed to traditional values, but they used very modern publishing technologies to sell their stories, and by 1900 they were reaching hundreds of thousands of readers every month. When hunter-writers took up conservation as a cause, they used that reach to rally popular support for the national parks and for legislation that restricted hunting in the US, Canada, and Newfoundland. The Hunter Elite is the first book to explore both the international nature of American hunting during this period and the essential contributions of hunting narratives and the publishing industry to the North American conservation movement.

Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestselling book, the police chief who led one of the most suspenseful manhunts in American history takes readers behind the headlines into the notorious “D.C. sniper” case that held the nation spellbound. In October 2002, ordinary Americans feared for their lives, too frightened to pump gas at the local station or let their children play outside. For twenty-three nightmarish days, a series of random sniper killings terrorized the Washington, D.C. area and launched the largest manhunt in American history—under the harsh glare of a media frenzy. Three Weeks in October follows Charles Moose’s efforts to crack a seemingly unsolvable case. As a stunned nation watched, Chief Moose stood tall in the face of horrific events—a courageous presence whose tenacity brought snipers John Allen Muhammed and Lee Boyd Malvo to justice. But this is also the inspirational story of Moose’s rise from a young African American cop battling prejudice to a respected chief of police—who couldn’t stop until he captured two of the most bizarre killers America has ever known. “Compelling . . . A very candid story . . . Well worth reading.”—The Washington Post “Fascinating.”—The Daily Oklahoman “Gutsy, endearing, no-nonsense . . . [cuts] through all the hubbub to show that behind the provocative headlines was little more than a simple, heartfelt man just trying to do the best job he could.”—Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating book, wildlife expert and enthusiast Warner Shedd refutes popular animal myths like squirrels remembering where they bury nuts, wolves howling at the moon, and oppossums "playing dead." Have you ever seen a flying squirrel flapping through the air, watched a beaver carrying a load of mud on its tail, or ducked when a porcupine started throwing its quills? Probably not, says Shedd, former regional executive for the National Wildlife Federation. Offering scientific evidence that refutes many of the most tenacious and persevering folklore about wild animals, Owls Aren't Wise & Bats Aren't Blind will captivate you with fascinating facts and humorous anecdotes about more than thirty North American species-- some as familiar as the common toad, and others as elusive as the lynx. Owls Aren't Wise & Bats Aren't Blind is an entertaining dose of scientific reality for any nature enthusiast or armchair adventurer.
