Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Uses of a Liberal Education: Being a Lecture Delivered at the Opening of the Building, Erected for the Accommodation of the Classes of the Pictou Academical Institution But, though the situation of every human being renders the acquisition of acertain degree of intelligence and activity unavoidable no individual can, by his own observation and experience, acquire that intellectual and moral improvement for which man is designed. Besides, in the first stages ofexistence, a variety of circumstances combine to abstract attention from improvement to plea sure, and thus, .to impede the enlargement of the intel lectual faculties and deprave the heart. To guard against these evils, therefore, divine wisdom has placed man, during the early period of life, in a state of dependence that the knowledge of parents might pro mote the improvement of children, and the wisdom of age counteract the follies of youth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, Vol. 1 of 3 Providence has conferred upon mankind, is the power of communicating their thoughts to one another. Defiitute of this power, Reafon would be a folitary, and, in fome meafure, an unavailing principle. Speech is the great infirument by which man becomes beneficial to man: and it is to the intercourfe and tranfmi ion of thought, by means of fpeech, that we are chie y indebted for the improvement of thought itfelf. Small are the ad vances which a {ingle unafii ed individual can make towards perfecting any of his powers. What We call human reafon, is not the effort or ability of one, fo much as it is the refelt of the realbn of many, ariling from lights mutually communicated, in confequcnce of'difcourfe and writing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College in Relation to Liberal Education The University of Rochester had its beginning in a liberal and progressive apprehension of educational needs. It was distinctly seen by its founders that an atmosphere of human activity and social refinement is needed to stimulate intellectual culture and invigorate moral character; and, accordingly, this beautiful and prosperous city, which has since become even more conspicuously a centre of elevating influences, was chosen as its seat. Far enough West to feel the thrill of enterprise and to share in the optimistic hopes of Western life without being subject to its provincialisms; far enough East to enjoy the benefits of our oldest American civilization without being influenced by its archaic customs and colonial traditions - Rochester, on the principal highway between the great lakes and the Atlantic, satisfies all the conditions of an ideal university town. The company of men who have shaped the destinies of this institution was originally formed by the selective power of a common conviction that a great opportunity creates a great obligation; and the corporation has since been recruited from among those who shared in this conviction. The not inconsiderable resources which years of generosity and prudence have accumulated are mainly the continued tokens of the satisfaction and perseverance with which the fathers of the enterprise themselves and their colleagues in munificence have regarded their undertaking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing and the Permanent in Liberal Education Among the many movements affecting the higher interests of society during recent decades none has been more conspicuous than that which has modified collegiate education. Marked tendencies toward change have made headway, and concession has been more common than opposition. Have we then a "new education?" Have traditional methods and aims been superseded? Do the changes touch what is vital, or are the best values conserved? Is a reaction to be desired, or shall the present trend go on? These are questions to which an intelligent answer can be given, only as we search for elements fixed and variable, and so discover the changing and the permanent in liberal education. It is not a question, of new subjects or new methods of advanced instruction, for education and instruction are not identical. Higher instruction may be quite different from liberal education. Moreover, the term "liberal" does not necessarily mean "bountiful." Plentifulness of subjects does not guarantee liberal training. Higher education, in order to be liberal, must have a distinctive scope, aim, and spirit. Its extent does not make it so, but rather its content and intent. Knowledge sought and used only as equipment for an occupation, a trade, a profession, may be marvelously minute and extensive, but it is not liberal. We must distinguish, as Plato did, those studies which are pursued "not with the view of making any of them a profession, but only as a part of education, and because a private gentleman and a freeman ought to know them." So the "liberal arts" of the mediaeval time were those deemed necessary to freemen, and deficient though they were in range, had high value in developing human capacity. A similar conception determined the type of education which has been known as "collegiate." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Correlation of Vocational and Liberal Education Through English Up to about 1876, then, there was scarcely to be found, in the United States, any definite, well-organized system of secondary instruction in the mother - tongue. We were virtually in the same condition that England now is, and at least fifty years behind Germany. The Americans have always been a reading people, and there was a growing interest among scholars and laymen in the English language and in English literature. But only here and there had this penetrated into the secondary school system. (7) It was not long after the beginning Of the nineteenth century, however, before the elements which make up our curriculum in English came into existence. Declamation and oratory, best typified in lectures given at Harvard College in 1806 - 1808; instruction in Rhetoric and Composition as given in several American Colleges during the middle of the century; and English Literature as given in a meager way about 1875 were introduced and then developed with great rapidity. But what do we mean by literature? One literary critic with considerable insight has said. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "This book introduces readers to a paradigm for understanding classical education that transcends the familiar three-stage pattern of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Instead, this book describes the liberal arts as a central part of a larger and more robust paradigm of classical education that should consist of piety, gymnastic, music, liberal arts, philosophy, and theology. The book also recovers the means by which classical educators developed more than just intellectual virtue (by means of the seven liberal arts) by holistically cultivating the mind, body, will, and affections."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford After the War a Liberal Education I submit that it is under the control of these two propositions, taken singly or together, that all Statutes and Regulations for new courses of study to be introduced at Oxford, with their respective examinations and degrees, and for' the alteration of existing courses, ought to be framed. Some such Statutes and Regulations have already been made, and are being made, by the University in preparation for new con ditions likely, it is thought, to become urgent as soon as Peace comes. It remains to be seen how these particular Statutes and Regula tions will work. I think that the future is still too obscure to warrant preparations which go into detail. I shall therefore content myself with putting forward some general considera tions which, as it seems to me, ought to govern all detail, when the time comes for going into detail - general considerations involving the acceptance of the two propositions which I have placed at the head of this pamphlet. Oxford has hitherto made the imparting of a liberal education her principal concern. Were she to make it less than her principal concern she would break the continuity of her life irreparably, and renounce her claim to a great place in the English-speaking world of the future. As an institution concerned principally with the production of specialists she might hold a respectable place in that world, but certainly would not hold a great place. In order, however, to maintain the continuity of her life in the altered circumstances of the New Age, she must reform her scheme of a liberal education in the sense of assigning a place in it to Natural Science by the side of Humane Letters themselves more broadly conceived.
