Book excerpt: Although historians have assumed previously that early Kentucky was a one-party area, Watlington has discovered that there were actually three active parties--the partisan," "court," and "country." From the land-grant maze following the 1779 migration, through a brief Tory movement and even James Wilkinson's intrigue for a Spanish connection, she traces the parties' development and their struggle for power in the vigorous world of postrevolutionary Kentucky politics." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, the majority of Kentuckians supported the Union under the leadership of Henry Clay, but one part of the state presented a striking exception. The Jackson Purchase—bounded by the Mississippi River to the west, the Ohio River to the north, and the Tennessee River to the east—fought hard for separation and secession, and produced eight times more Confederates than Union soldiers. Supporting states' rights and slavery, these eight counties in the westernmost part of the commonwealth were so pro-Confederate that the Purchase was dubbed "the South Carolina of Kentucky." The first dedicated study of this key region, Kentucky Confederates provides valuable insights into a misunderstood and understudied part of Civil War history. Author Berry Craig begins by exploring the development of the Purchase from 1818, when Andrew Jackson and Isaac Shelby acquired it from the Chickasaw tribe. Geographically isolated from the rest of the Bluegrass State, the area's early settlers came from the South, and rail and river trade linked the region to Memphis and western Tennessee rather than to points north and east. Craig draws from an impressive array of primary documents, including newspapers, letters, and diaries, to reveal the regional and national impact this unique territory had on the nation's greatest conflict. Offering an important new perspective on this rebellious borderland and its failed bid for secession, Kentucky Confederates will serve as the standard text on the subject for years to come.

Book excerpt: When the Civil War began in 1861, 30-year-old William Babcock Hazen was a first lieutenant and assistant instructor of infantry tactics at the U.S. Military Academy. At the war's conclusion in 1865, he commanded an army corps with the rank of major general. Two decades later, Hazen wrote A Narrative of Military Service in the midst of controversy which marked the last 25 years of his life, and the book was aimed in large part to silence vituperative criticism of his wartime record. This record included command of the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, a brigade in the Army of the Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland, and a division in the Army of the Tennessee. A strict disciplinarian who demanded the best from his men, he gained the lasting respect of General William T. Sherman and enjoyed lifetime friendship with fellow Ohio General James A. Garfield, who became the nation's 20th president. Hazen's colorful, controversy-filled career during and after the Civil War is generally not well known today. To his military contemporaries, however, he was either a thorny anethema or a hero, and by merit or design his name continually was thrust into the public arena. Steadfast in his convictions, he came to be recognized throughout his long service as an able officer and a dangerous enemy. In war as in peace, those who dared cross him did so at their own peril. This reprint edition of Hazen's original 1885 work features the addition of 71 photographs and a new introduction by Richard A. Baumgartner. -- jacket flap of 1993 edition.

Book excerpt: One of the earliest roads in Kentucky led from Fort Boonesborough to a prime hunting location known as the Lower Blue Licks, or the Lower Salt Spring. Salt licks attracted buffalo in large numbers and were favored spots for hunters. Licks also provided a valuable source of salt that was critical for preserving meat. In 1775, Kentucky's settlement year, the hunters at Boonesborough discovered the Lower Blue Licks by following a series of connected buffalo traces. The path crossed the river near Boonesborough and went up Lower Howard's Creek in present-day Clark County. There it traverses the Lower Howard's Creek Nature & Heritage Preserve. This report describes the history and geography of the Salt Spring Trace, as well as other early roads in the Preserve.
