Book excerpt: On October 8, 1908, Mordecai Brown clutched a half-dozen notes inside his coat pocket. The message of each was clear: We’ll kill you if you pitch and beat the Giants. A black handprint marked each note, the signature of the Italian Mafia. Mordecai Brown—dubbed “Three Finger” because of a childhood farm injury—was the dominant pitcher for the great Chicago Cubs team of the early twentieth century, a team that from 1906 through 1910 was arguably the best in baseball history. Brown’s handicap enabled him to throw pitches with an unconventional movement that left batters bewildered—the curve ball that Ty Cobb once called “the most devastating” he had ever faced. How Brown responded to the Mafia’s threats in 1908 mirrored the way he took life in general: with unflappable courage and resolve. Telling his story for the first time, Cindy Thomson and Scott Brown trail Mordecai from the Indiana countryside to the coal mines, from semipro ball to the Majors, from the World Series mound back down to the Minors. Along the way they retrieve the lost lore of one of baseball’s greatest pitchers—and chronicle one man’s determination to reach a dream that most believed was unreachable.

Book excerpt: WINNER of the 2003 Ignatz Award for Best Graphic Novel! ". . . a single-minded obsession with animation history informs this work even as its creator twists and tears that history into a new, hideous, and hilarious form. There's a little bit of Roger Rabbit and a whole lot of Spinal Tap at work here. Twisted and dark, funny and frightening, this is a deliciously evil toon history that demands attention." -- Alan David Doane Top Shelf is proud to present a very unique comics project. Through a series of never-before-seen interviews and rare photos, documentary-maker Rich Koslowski reveals the horrifying true story behind the Cartoon industry and our most celebrated cartoon actors -- the story that Hollywood doesn't want you to see. A revolution of basketball fundamental skills is needed, and now it is feasible with a break-through techniqueThree-Finger Zen, Universal Ball-Handling Mechanism. In 2010, after five-year dedicated research and praxis, Xiaoxing Chen discovered Three- Finger-Zen (3fz), a nature mechanism of human hand and arm for handling the basketball. It benefits every participant of the sport, and has technical capabilities to revolutionize basketball for a perfect game. Chen built his theories and praxes of how basketball should work in 3fz with its unique features: Integrates all basketball offense skills as one simple mechanism. Enables unchallengeable shooting with exceptional accuracy. Improves players athletic abilities and prevent passive injuries. Enhances physical and mental development of children. Sparks logic and artistic intelligence in youths and adults. Promotes physical and mental health of the general public. Distinctive from conventional basketball skills, 3fz applies the last three fingersmiddle finger, ring finger and pinkyto handle and control the ball. In this method, the ring finger plays a command-and-control role in the ball-handling processes of dribbling, passing, and shooting. The technique is easy to learn when you understand the 3fz mechanism and follow the training instructions. In this book, Chen reveals the steps to 3fz basketball revolution and teaches you how to be the best basketball player you can be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life and Exploits of Three-Finger’d Jack (1801) is a book by William Burdett. Inspired by tales of legendary slave-turned-rebel Jack Mansong, as well as by a popular pantomime based on Jack’s life, Burdett published his book to popular acclaim in England. In late eighteenth-century Jamaica, a runaway slave named Jack “Three-Fingered Jack” Mansong defied British law to establish a community of runaways in the densely forested Blue Mountains of what is now Sant Thomas Parish. Because his actions violated a controversial treaty between the Jamaican Maroons and the colonial authority, Jack and his comrades faced persecution from both groups. Knowing that his only choice was between freedom or death, Jack fought valiantly to the bitter end. In Burdett’s version of events, Jack’s story begins in Africa, where he goes by the name Mansong. Stolen into slavery and taken to the Caribbean, the war hero prepares to make his break for the mountains. The Life and Exploits of Three-Finger’d Jack also features a romantic subplot between the planter’s daughter Rosa and Captain Orford, an Englishman newly arrived in Jamaica. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of William Burdett’s The Life and Exploits of Three-Finger’d Jack is a classic of British-Jamaican literature reimagined for modern readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, a few scientists started working on a Xenopus transcription factor, TFIIIA. They soon discovered a novel domain associated with zinc, and named this domain "zinc finger. " Th e number of proteins with similar zinc fingers grew quickly and these proteins are now called C2H2, Cys2His2 or classical zinc finger proteins. To date, about 24,000 C2H2 zinc finger proteins have been recognized. Approximately 700 human genes, or more than 2% of the genome, have been estimated to encode C2H2 finger proteins. From the beginning these proteins were thought to be numerous, but no one could have predicted such a huge number. Perhaps thousands of scientists are now working on C2H2 zinc finger proteins fi-om variou s viewpoints. This field is a good example of how a new science begins with the insight of a few scientists and how it develops by efforts of numerous independent scientists, in contrast to a policy-driven scientific project, such as the Human Genome Project, with goals clearly set at its inception and with work performed by a huge collaboration throughout the world. As more zinc finger proteins were discovered, several subfamilies, such as C2C2, CCHC, CCCH, LIM, RING, TAZ, and FYVE emerged, increasing our understanding of zinc fingers. The knowledge was overwhelming. Moreover, scientists began defining the term "zinc finger" differently and using various names for identical zinc fingers. These complications may explain why no single comprehensive resource of zinc finger proteins was available before this publication.
