Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis comprises three essays on topics of environmental economics, focusing on the U.S. transportation sector. The first essay examines scrappage patterns of used vehicle in the U.S. market. We estimate vehicle life time and the elasticity of scrappage rate with respect to vehicle price. These two parameters are used in simulation models to evaluate public policies like CAFE standards and gasoline taxes. We find that not only are vehicles lasting longer but that scrap rates are less responsive to changes in vehicle price than previously estimated. The second essay examines the impact of removing minimum parking requirements by exploiting New York City's 1982 deregulation of parking in the Manhattan core. We use a Difference-InDifference model to estimate the impact of this policy change on housing density, vehicle density and population density. We find that eliminating the mandated parking spaces increases housing density by 23% and increases, rather than decrease vehicle density by 13%. The policy does not appear to impact population density, perhaps because household sizes shrink after its implementation. The last essay compares the energy intensity for public transit buses and private driving across 62 US cities. We find that there are only 11 cities where private driving outperforms public buses in terms of energy intensity. In addition, if there are other mode of public transportation, such as rail system, they are usually much less energy intense than private driving. To improve bus energy intensity, it might be very difficult to solely reply on transit agencies' effort of attracting more ridership.

Book excerpt: The way these modes work together determines the overall quality of the transport network. The third essay discusses the concept of accessibility and how accessibility measures can be used in the case of Nairobi to explore the dynamics of social exclusion across modes, residential location, and income. This dissertation provides three examples of how sustainability goals may fall short if transportation is not viewed as a multimodal system that interacts with and shapes urban form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis ventures to understand and explain aspects of the complex system of land usage, housing and transportation in cities. It proposes theoretical models and uses empirical analysis to aid its goal of explaining some stylized facts and anecdotal evidence available in the field of urban economics. It contributes to the literature on urban-transportation by proposing a theoretical model of industrial organization in the freight industry. The model sheds light on the nature of competition between freight carriers competing in transport price and service frequency. Another theoretical contribution is an economic model of squatting (illegal occupation of land), a widespread phenomenon observed especially in the cities of the developing world. This model has the potential to aid policy analysis of land use and housing in cities across the developing nations. A third contribution is a study that uses empirical methods to provide descriptive evidence regarding slum housing in Indonesia. It provides an understanding of the correlation between socio-economic attributes of households and the quality of dwellings occupied by these households. Overall, the dissertation carries out an economic analysis of various currently under-explored and less-understood aspects of urban and transportation economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation research consists of the following three related essays that examine the relationship between land use, travel behavior, and labor market outcomes in the Chicago metropolitan area. The first study investigates the effect of built environment and labor market spatial structure on travel behavior, particularly considering spatial effects and residential self-selection. The second essay extends the first study in terms of focusing on the causal relationship between land use and travel behavior using a structural equation model (SEM). The third essay assesses the effect of access to employment opportunities on labor market outcomes, especially unemployment rates and household income. It is expected that these three essays provide better understanding of the connections between land use, transportation, and urban labor market outcomes and contribute to give policy implications for land use and transportation planning.
