Traditional powerful actors, such as the USA, Russia, France and the UK, have today a potential rival in that region. China claims a place in the theatre, all the more ambiguous for the others that it is reminiscent of ancient exchanges on the old Silk Road. Today, there is talk about a New Silk Road initiated by Beijing. Each of the three essays of this book cast light on an aspect of the Chinese- Arab relations: The first essay deals with history; it goes back in time as far as the period before 618 A.D., to find the first contacts between Arabs and Chinese, then continues the historical investigation up to the Tang Dynasty. Indeed, if today we can talk of "reviving" the Silk Road, it is not without thinking of those great days of ancient dynasties and peoples. The chapter may therefore ultimately show that there is more than the economic reasons to link together the peoples on the Belt and Road. The second essay shows an aspect of the Chinese diplomacy that has not gotten enough attention from the public as did other issues. It is the Chinese attempt at mediation for a peaceful resolution of the Darfur conflict in Sudan, once the largest Arab country of Africa. It shows that with its increasing clout in the MENA region, China can still help settle some thorny issues. The third deals with the current problems in China and the Arab Gulf countries relations, especially political and security issues, geopolitical challenges, terrorist threats, and the ongoing strategic dialogue in parallel with the FTA negotiations. The Gulf is an important region, not only in Middle East geopolitical dynamics and power politics, but also for China, which relies on it for energy supplies. The three essays together introduce the reader to an overall picture of the Chinese-Arab relationship. The two authors are specialist of China and the Middle East.

In this study, first published in 1981, the author draws upon a wealth of previously unpublished and inaccessible material to analyse Chinese attitudes in three cases: the two Arab liberation movements, the Palestine Resistance Movement and the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Oman, and the established and independent State of Kuwait. Since the Arab liberation movements played a significant political role within their fields of operation, it was necessary for China to decide whether these movements did actually fit in with Chinese foreign policy objectives. Dr Behbehani’s analysis of these two case studies provides the basis for a discussion of whether China’s motives in supporting the liberation movements are theoretical or purely practical. China’s support for Kuwait’s political internal continuity is related to the stability of the whole Gulf region. The author analyses Chinese support for Kuwait and the surrounding conservative states on two main bases, political and economic, in the form of trade. It is through these channels, particularly the economic one, that China has sought to establish itself in the Gulf and the Arabian peninsula.

The book looks at issues that are usually ignored when discussing Syria such as the strategic control over its hydrocarbon resources, as well as the power of propaganda in portraying realities. It features the use of non-state actors by regional competing powers and the role of local councils in stabilizing the country. The edited volume brings together contributions by authors with different backgrounds who present conflicting views reflecting the divergence between the various stakeholders about the Syrian crisis.
