The first chapter explores the relationship between prejudice and wages for gay men in the United States. I show that search models of taste-based discrimination can predict the empirical relationship between prejudice towards gay men and their wages. The second chapter explores how individuals use wage penalties when deciding which college major to select. Using a laboratory experiment, I show that higher female wage penalties in the labor market deter female students from selecting a major. Since female students expect discrimination to be worse in STEM fields, this preference for majors with lower wage penalties leads to a gender participation gap in STEM. My experiment showed that correcting misinformation about wage penalties in the labor market can increase female interest in STEM majors. The final chapter explores how effective public policy has been at reducing the wage penalty against gay men and lesbian women in the United States. I show that the heterogeneous nature of state-level employment non-discrimination laws in the United States has important consequences for their effectiveness. Stronger laws are more effective at reducing the wage penalty for gay men but may lead to lower levels of employment for lesbian women. Weak laws in the United States had no effect on the labor market outcomes of gay men and lesbian women.

In the third paper, a coauthor and I develop a computer model in which individual agents choose a neighborhood based on preferences over the area's racial composition; this model of residential segregation is loosely based on the 1971 Schelling model. We find that both the strength of preferences for diversity, and historical segregation, have strong effects on equilibrium levels of integration. When we include contemporary discrimination in our model, however, we find that it increases segregation in an initially unsegregated model, but has no additional effect on segregation in an initially segregated model. Finally, we examine a simple social policy that encourages integration, and find that it is successful in creating diversity, making diversity-seeking agents better off.

The first chapter focuses on racial discrimination in rental housing. I concentrate on Moscow's rental housing market, where landlords practice overt discrimination. Using a model with building-level fixed effects, I show that discrimination generates a racial differential in rents: non-discriminatory apartments are 4% more expensive. The second chapter focuses on competition between residents and tourists for urban amenities. Using TripAdvisor reviews, we construct panel data on tourism and consumption in Paris. We show that during the pandemic, a decline in tourism led to an increase in Parisians' satisfaction with restaurants and other amenities. The third chapter explores how contemporary social movements can broaden their base. Using super spread events as a source of plausible exogenous variation at the county level, we find that exposure to the pandemic led to an increase in the likelihood of observing BLM events online and offline. This effect is more pronounced in whiter, more affluent and suburban counties. We show that this effect is driven by higher social media take-up among non-traditional users.

In the chapter "Testing Standard Theories of Economic Discrimination: Productivity, Prejudice, and Lost Profits During Baseball's Integration" evidence from the integration of white professional baseball is used to explore the empirical dynamics of integration, and in so doing reveal the nature of the discrimination present in that market. An important finding is that owner discrimination appears to be the only traditional model of discrimination present in the market. Estimates of the profits forgone by owners are also generated, and are both statistically significant and substantial. In "Opportunities Denied, Wages Diminished: Using Search Theory to Translate Audit Pair Study Findings Into Wage Differentials," a new application of a search model of discrimination is used to estimate the extent to which documented levels of hiring disparity affect the economic outcomes of job seekers. A key finding is that even seemingly small differences in hiring rates can lead to substantially different realized wages. Perhaps even more important than the findings is the use of a theoretical tool to translate findings from audit studies of the labor market into more relevant metrics. In the third essay "Do Wages Approach Value When Productivity Signals Are Private?" a game theoretic model where only tenure and wages are publicly observable is posited. It is found that wages should converge to productivity even in this market of limited information. The model's predictions are also consistent with the stylized fact that a black-white wage gap persists at the high-skill end of the distribution, yet no "reverse gap" exists at the low-skill end. Additional empirical evidence is offered that is consistent with the dynamics proposed by the model. In combination, these three essays improve upon our understanding of economic discrimination by empirically testing various models of discrimination, translating audit study findings into more relevant metrics, and positing a model of employer learning that incorporates private signals.

New Evidence of Salary Discrimination in Major League Baseball Salary discrimination in MLB has largely been discarded as a research topic. However traditional quantitative methods (particularly least squares regression) have concentrated on the effect of race for the average player. This is not where we should expect to find discrimination, as the relative cost of discriminating against a better player is surely higher. I use quantile regression to uncover salary discrimination against black players in the lower half of the salary distribution. Not only are the premia for white and Hispanic players statistically significant, but they are large: up to 25% for the bottom quintile of players. I also demonstrate that racial effects may be obscured in typical baseball salary regressions when they suffer from omitted variable bias, brought about by failing to properly consider speed and fielding ability. Win or Go Home: Why College Football Coaches Get Fired Models of dismissals of sports executives frequently ignore the development of expectations regarding performance. I explore the interplay between these expectations and the coachs tenure by examining dismissals of college football head coaches from 1983 to 2006. Using a discrete-time hazard model, I demonstrate that schools use prior performance in two ways: to evaluate the ability of the coach, and to establish performance standards for retention. As recent performance is more relevant for estimating ability, I show that stronger recent performances decrease the chance of dismissal, but stronger historic performances increase the chance of dismissal. Results describe a continual learning process on the part of schools. I also consider the effects of race, insider-ness, rivalries, and rules violations on retention. Day to Day with the NBA Superstars I use censored regression (Tobit) analysis on NBA game-level attendance data to examine the superstar externality effect identified by Berri and Schmidt (2006): star players increase road attendance, and since home teams (at least in the NBA) retain 100% of the gate revenues, this constitutes an externality. Game-level data has several advantages over the season-level data employed by Berri and Schmidt: the ability to directly control for sellouts, estimation of dynamic intra-season attendance effects, and the lack of sensitivity to star player distribution. A new intra-season effect estimated is a superstar substitution effect accounting for a star0́9s negative effect on attendance at adjacent games, partially mitigating the superstar externality.

When inefficiencies in the tort system are small, however, incentives to develop safer products may be stronger under asymmetric liability.
