Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report discusses the development of an improved manner of portraying instrument approach and landing (AL) procedures through the use of a modified three-dimensional (3-D) charting technique. Previous AL charting development efforts as well as the geometric projection and photographic techniques considered are described. Analysis of instrument procedures formed the basis for the concept of using pre-drawn symbols for chart compilation which is explained in detail. The Navy and Air Force approaches to 3-D development are compared and discussed with the aid of sample graphics. The report concludes that 3-D approach and landing charts have been operationally evaluated to be a significant improvement and can be produced at a cost saving. (Author).

Book Synopsis The History of Cartography, Volume 6 by : Mark Monmonier
Download or read book The History of Cartography, Volume 6 written by Mark Monmonier and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 1941 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years, the History of Cartography Project has charted the course for scholarship on cartography, bringing together research from a variety of disciplines on the creation, dissemination, and use of maps. Volume 6, Cartography in the Twentieth Century, continues this tradition with a groundbreaking survey of the century just ended and a new full-color, encyclopedic format. The twentieth century is a pivotal period in map history. The transition from paper to digital formats led to previously unimaginable dynamic and interactive maps. Geographic information systems radically altered cartographic institutions and reduced the skill required to create maps. Satellite positioning and mobile communications revolutionized wayfinding. Mapping evolved as an important tool for coping with complexity, organizing knowledge, and influencing public opinion in all parts of the globe and at all levels of society. Volume 6 covers these changes comprehensively, while thoroughly demonstrating the far-reaching effects of maps on science, technology, and society—and vice versa. The lavishly produced volume includes more than five hundred articles accompanied by more than a thousand images. Hundreds of expert contributors provide both original research, often based on their own participation in the developments they describe, and interpretations of larger trends in cartography. Designed for use by both scholars and the general public, this definitive volume is a reference work of first resort for all who study and love maps.

Book Synopsis Cartographic Grounds by : Charles Waldheim
Download or read book Cartographic Grounds written by Charles Waldheim and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping has been one of the most fertile areas of exploration for architecture and landscape in the past few decades. While documenting this shift in representation from the material and physical description toward the depiction of the unseen and often immaterial, Cartographic Grounds takes a critical view toward the current use of data mapping and visualization and calls for a return to traditional cartographic techniques to reimagine the manifestation and manipulation of the ground itself. Each of the ten chapters focuses on a single cartographic technique—sounding/spot elevation, isobath/contour, hachure/hatch, shaded relief, land classification, figure-ground, stratigraphic column, cross-section, line symbol, conventional sign—and illustrates it through beautiful maps and plans from notable designers and cartographers throughout history, from Leonardo da Vinci to James Corner Field Operations. Mohsen Mostafavi, dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, introduces the book.
