Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Grid Generation is an outstanding text/reference designed to introduce students in applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, and aerospace engineering to structured grid generation. It provides excellent reference material for practitioners in industry, and it presents new concepts to researchers. Readers will learn what boundary-conforming grids are, how to generate them, and how to devise their own methods. The text is written in a clear, intuitive style that doesn't get bogged down in unnecessary abstractions. Topics covered include planar, surface, and 3-D grid generation; numerical techniques; solution adaptivity; the finite volume approach to discretization of hosted equations; concepts from elementary differential geometry; and the transformation of differential operators to general coordinate systems. The book also reviews the literature on algebraic, conformal, orthogonal, hyperbolic, parabolic, elliptic, biharmonic, and variational approaches to grid generation. This unique volume closes with the author's original methods of variational grid generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Grid Generation addresses the use of grids (meshes) in the numerical solutions of partial differential equations by finite elements, finite volume, finite differences, and boundary elements. Four parts divide the chapters: structured grids, unstructured girds, surface definition, and adaption/quality. An introduction to each section provides a roadmap through the material. This handbook covers: Fundamental concepts and approaches Grid generation process Essential mathematical elements from tensor analysis and differential geometry, particularly relevant to curves and surfaces Cells of any shape - Cartesian, structured curvilinear coordinates, unstructured tetrahedra, unstructured hexahedra, or various combinations Separate grids overlaid on one another, communicating data through interpolation Moving boundaries and internal interfaces in the field Resolving gradients and controlling solution error Grid generation codes, both commercial and freeware, as well as representative and illustrative grid configurations Handbook of Grid Generation contains 37 chapters as well as contributions from more than 100 experts from around the world, comprehensively evaluating this expanding field and providing a fundamental orientation for practitioners.

Book excerpt: Two- and three-dimensional surface normal grids are generated in Cartesian coordinates around a supersonic/hypersonic waverider configuration using parabolic partial differential equations. The elliptic partial differential equations for grid generation are parabolized in the xi direction in two dimesions, and in the xi and zeta directions in three dimensions. This is consistent with spatial marching flow solutions. The parabolized grid equations march in the xi direction for two dimensions and in both the xi and zeta directions for three dimensions, without iteration. The following problems are investigated: describing the boundary points, generating grids around the waverider's wing tip, using approximations to the elliptic grid generation equations too far downstream around a convex corner, and grid crossover in concave regions when orthogonality is specified. The degree of grid smoothing in the marching directions is related to the positioning of the approximations to the elliptic grid generation equations. Highly stretched surface orthogonal grids are accurately and efficiently generated without grid embedding for high Reynold's number flows. Keywords: Grids; Fluid mechanics; Navier Stokes equations; Three dimensional flow; Thesis.

Book excerpt: The process of breaking up a physical domain into smaller sub-domains, known as meshing, facilitates the numerical solution of partial differential equations used to simulate physical systems. In an updated and expanded Second Edition, this monograph gives a detailed treatment based on the numerical solution of inverted Beltramian and diffusion equations with respect to monitor metrics for generating both structured and unstructured grids in domains and on surfaces.

These new discretization techniques are promising approaches to overcome the severe problem of mesh-generation. Furthermore, the easy coupling of meshfree discretizations of continuous phenomena to dis crete particle models and the straightforward Lagrangian treatment of PDEs via these techniques make them very interesting from a practical as well as a theoretical point of view. Generally speaking, there are two different types of meshfree approaches; first, the classical particle methods [104, 105, 107, 108] and second, meshfree discretizations based on data fitting techniques [13, 39]. Traditional parti cle methods stem from physics applications like Boltzmann equations [3, 50] and are also of great interest in the mathematical modeling community since many applications nowadays require the use of molecular and atomistic mod els (for instance in semi-conductor design). Note however that these methods are Lagrangian methods; i. e. , they are based On a time-dependent formulation or conservation law and can be applied only within this context. In a particle method we use a discrete set of points to discretize the domain of interest and the solution at a certain time. The PDE is then transformed into equa tions of motion for the discrete particles such that the particles can be moved via these equations. After time discretization of the equations of motion we obtain a certain particle distribution for every time step.
