Book excerpt: A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element model for concrete pavements, called 3DPAVE, was developed in this study in order to analyze accurately the many complex and interacting factors which influence the support provided to a concrete pavement. Pavement support and finite element models for pavements were first briefly reviewed. Based on the review, the ABAQUS general-purpose finite element software was used to develop a powerful and versatile 3-D model to overcome many of the inherent limitations of 2-D finite element models. A careful analysis of ABAQUS' many element types, features and options was conducted to select the components which would produce a robust and efficient model. The 3DPAVE consistently outperformed the 2-D model in accuracy over wide ranges of inputs for a variety of problems during its development. 3DPAVE was validated by comparison with measured deflection, stress, and strain data for traffic loading and temperature variation from AASHO Road Test, the Arlington Road Test, and the Portland Cement Association's slab experiments. In every comparison with measured field data, 3DPAVE's calculated responses were found to be in very good agreement with the measured responses. Applications of 3DPAVE were made to explore many complicated effects and interactions in concrete pavements, including foundation support; base thickness, stiffness, and interface bond/friction; slab curling and warping due to temperature and moisture gradients; dowel and aggregate interlock load transfer action at joints; and improved support with a widened lane, widened base, or tied concrete shoulder.

Book excerpt: Though many 'finite element' books exist, this book provides a unique focus on developing the method for three-dimensional, industrial problems. This is significant as many methods which work well for small applications fail for large scale problems, which generally: are not so well posed introduce stringent computer time conditions require robust solution techniques. Starting from sound continuum mechanics principles, derivation in this book focuses only on proven methods. Coverage of all different aspects of linear and nonlinear thermal mechanical problems in solids are described, thereby avoiding distracting the reader with extraneous solutions paths. Emphasis is put on consistent representation and includes the examination of topics which are not frequently found in other texts, such as cyclic symmetry, rigid body motion and nonlinear multiple point constraints. Advanced material formulations include anisotropic hyperelasticity, large strain multiplicative viscoplasticity and single crystal viscoplasticity. Finally, the methods described in the book are implemented in the finite element software CalculiX, which is freely available (www.calculix.de; the GNU General Public License applies). Suited to industry practitioners and academic researchers alike, The Finite Element Method for Three-Dimensional Thermomechanical Applications expertly bridges the gap between continuum mechanics and the finite element method.

Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of an international conference held at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for materials Science and Technology) in Dübendorf, Switzerland, in July 2020. The conference series was established by the International Society of Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructure (iSMARTi) for promoting and discussing state-of-the-art design, maintenance, rehabilitation and management of pavements. The inaugural conference was held at Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2000. The series has steadily grown over the past 20 years, with installments hosted in various countries all over the world. The respective contributions share the latest insights from research and practice in the maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements, and discuss advanced materials, technologies and solutions for achieving an even more sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

Book excerpt: In Finite Element Design of Concrete Structures: practical problems and their solutions the author addresses this blind belief in computer results by offering a useful critique that important details are overlooked due to the flood of information from the output of computer calculations. Indeed, errors in the numerical model may lead in extreme cases to structural failures as the collapse of the so-called Sleipner platform has demonstrated.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examined current computerized analysis techniques for slabs on grade. The focus of investigations presented is the application of the three dimensional finite element program GEOSYS for the analysis of a slab, resting on a stress dependent elastic solid foundation. This model can be used to establish baseline structural response data, representative of complex boundary and support conditions, thereby validating conclusions reached on the basis of two dimensional analysis. Many computer runs were conducted to develop user guidelines for the fruitful utilization of the three dimensional approach. Effects considered include mesh fineness and gradation, subgrade extent, boundary conditions, etc. The three fundamental loading conditions, viz. interior, edge and corner, are examined. Two typical single and multi-wheel U.S. Air Force aircraft are employed (F-15 and C-141). Anm iterative scheme is introduced to account for subgrade stress dependence. The effect of stress softening, typical of cohesive soils, is evaluated and discussed. A number of interesting observations are made, and their bearing on current analysis and design approaches is considered. Two broad areas for future research are identified. The relevance and need of the GEOSYS model to future pavement research/development activities is established. Keywords: Runway Pavements; Slab Model.
