Book excerpt: Three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models were developed to simulate fluid flow and heat transfer in a variety of helical channel geometries: circular and elliptical. Laminar flow was observed for Reynolds number between 200 and 1000. Code validation was done for developing steady laminar flow in a circular curved channel. The CFD results were compared to previous numerical results to verify that the model was producing valid results. The curve of the channel has a centrifugal effect on the fluid flow creating secondary flow known as Dean cells. This secondary flow moves the location of the maximum axial velocity towards the outer wall of the channel and alters the developing temperature profiles as well. The helical models were designed to assess if the effect of the curve increases the rate of heat transfer when a constant surface temperature is applied to the wall of the channel. Different channel geometries were used to determine the effects on fluid flow and heat transfer in a helical channel. A channel with a 180° turn was also modeled in two different ways. One with a rounded 180° curve and the other with three perpendicular channels joined together to create a square 180° turn. The three combined channels are typically easier and less expensive to manufacture, but the fluid flow and heat transfer properties need to be considered before selecting the design. The helical models produce similar results. The Dean vortices produced in the secondary flow within the fluid aids in the heat transfer properties of the fluid. Of all the helical cases, a horizontal ellipse cross section achieved the highest outlet-inlet temperature difference, especially for higher Reynolds numbers. Even though the horizontal elliptical helix model produced the highest temperature difference, the circular helix model produced the highest percent increase over its straight model. Using a figure of merit to compare the Nusselt numbers and friction factors for each case, the circular helix geometry proved to me the best design option. The three combined channels produced better heat transfer results than the rounded channel for higher Reynolds numbers, with higher mean outlet temperatures. At lower Reynolds numbers, the results were very similar with only a 0.4% difference in results.

The study concentrates on the curved square-duct geometry and flow conditions for which detailed measurements have been obtained recently by Taylor, Whitelaw, and Yianneskis. The solution methodology encompasses solution of the compressible ensemble-averaged Navier-Stokes equations at low Mach number using a split linearized block implicit (LBI) scheme, and rapid convergence on the order of 80 noniterative time steps is obtained. The treatment of turbulent flows includes resolution of the viscous sublayer region. A series of solutions for both laminar and turbulent flow and for both two- and three-dimensional geometries of the same curvature are presented. The accuracy of these solutions is explored by mesh refinement and by comparison with experiment. In summary, good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement between solution and experiment is obtained. Collectively, this sequence of results serves to clarify the physical structure of these flows and hence how grid selection procedures might be adjusted to improve the numerical accuracy and experimental agreement. For a three-dimensional flow of considerable complexity, the relatively good agreement with experiment obtained for the turbulent flow case despite a coarse grid must be regarded as encouraging. Three a thermal 3-D LBE models (D3Q15, D3Q27) are studied and compared in terms of efficiency, accuracy, and robustness. The boundary treatment recently developed by Filippova and Hanel and Mei et al. in 2-D is extended to and implemented for 3-D. The convergence, stability, and computational efficiency of the 3-D LBE models with the boundary treatment for curved boundaries were tested in simulations of four 3-D flows: (1) Fully developed flows in a square duct, (2) flow in a 3-D lid-driven cavity, (3) fully developed flows in a circular pipe, and (4) a uniform flow over a sphere. We found that while the fifteen-velocity 3-D (D3Q15) model is more prone to numerical instability and the D3Q27 is more computationally intensive, the D3Q19 model provides a balance between computational reliability and efficiency. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrated that the boundary treatment for 3-D arbitrary curved geometry has second-order accuracy and possesses satisfactory stability characteristics.

The complexity is originated from, for example, non-Newtonian behavior of body fluids, complicated geometry, as well as the interaction of muscle and fluid. With the advent of modern computational technology, both in hardware and software, gradually these problems can be resolved. The present research illustrates two such examples. Grid generation is a branch of applied mathematics that is essential for conducting numerical simulation of fluid flow. In this research, a new grid generation technique is developed and implemented in a flow solver. This technique enables one to perform grid generation for complex geometry using only a single computational zone. Fluid flow can then be analyzed without iteration between zones. The scheme is based on the composite transformation of an algebraic mapping and a mapping governed by the Laplace equation. The governing equations for the grid generation are derived first and then solved numerically. The scheme used for solving the grid generating equations is an extension of the traditional three-dimensional Douglass-Gunn scheme. Areas of extension include the inclusion of mixed derivative terms as well as first-order derivative terms. A unique feature of the proposed grid generation scheme is the concept of multi-box computational domains. In this scheme, the physical domain is mapped onto a geometry composed of many boxes in the computational space, rather than a single box as the traditional method does. The numerical solution routine is adjusted accordingly to accommodate this new feature. Grids were generated for two model geometries using the proposed grid generation software. The graft model features one inflow conduit and two outflow conduits, while the left atrium (LA) model has four inflow conduits and one outflow conduit. Flow simulation was performed using the research code INS3D, which employs the method of artificial compressibility. This method transforms the Navier-Stokes equations into a hyperbolic-parabolic set by adding to them pseudo-pressure gradient terms. The scheme is then marched along the pseudo-time axis, until the velocity field becomes divergence-free. For the flow simulation in side the graft, the effect of Reynolds number and flow-division ratio is examined ... In summary, the present research demonstrates applications of computational fluid dynamics technique in the analysis of flow in biological system. A new grid generation technique is realized, and proved to be very useful in simulating these flows. Flow simulation results provide insights into the system and may be of use for clinic reference.

This depends on meander wave length and width-to-depth ratio, irrespective of whether the parameters are in the subresonant or the superresonant range.
