Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlights the Progression of Meshing Technologies and Their Applications Finite Element Mesh Generation provides a concise and comprehensive guide to the application of finite element mesh generation over 2D domains, curved surfaces, and 3D space. Organised according to the geometry and dimension of the problem domains, it develops from the basic meshing algorithms to the most advanced schemes to deal with problems with specific requirements such as boundary conformity, adaptive and anisotropic elements, shape qualities, and mesh optimization. It sets out the fundamentals of popular techniques, including: Delaunay triangulation Advancing-front (ADF) approach Quadtree/Octree techniques Refinement and optimization-based strategies From the geometrical and the topological aspects and their associated operations and inter-relationships, each approach is vividly described and illustrated with examples. Beyond the algorithms, the book also explores the practice of using metric tensor and surface curvatures for generating anisotropic meshes on parametric space. It presents results from research including 3D anisotropic meshing, mesh generation over unbounded domains, meshing by means of intersection, re-meshing by Delaunay-ADF approach, mesh refinement and optimization, generation of hexahedral meshes, and large scale and parallel meshing, along with innovative unpublished meshing methods. The author provides illustrations of major meshing algorithms, pseudo codes, and programming codes in C++ or FORTRAN. Geared toward research centers, universities, and engineering companies, Finite Element Mesh Generation describes mesh generation methods and fundamental techniques, and also serves as a valuable reference for laymen and experts alike.

Fluid Dynamics Panel. Specialists' Meeting and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel sponsored this Symposium to provide a survey of the capabilities of the CFD community for griding complex 3-D configurations. The intent was to provide some insight to the present state of grid generation for complex configurations to help assess whether this task presents a long-term stumbling block to the routine use of CFD in aerodynamic applications. To this end, the meeting was structured in five sessions: General Surveys, Algebraic Grid Generation, Block Structured Meshes, Multiblock-Adaptive Meshes and Unstructured Meshes. Thwenty-two papers from these sessions amply gemonstrated that the viability of a numerical solution depends directly on the quality of the mesh and surface representation as measured by its spacing and resolution. Of Particular interest was the mesh generation for complex configurations, such as advanced fighter or transport aircraft, missiles and space vehicles, where complex geometries and/or complex flowfields have to be analysed. Results from this meeting indicate that geometry discretization and generation of meshes for complex 3-D configurations in aerospace will continue to be time- and cost-consuming operations fro some time to come.

Book excerpt: A three-dimensional finite element analysis of the transition region, from a star cross-section to a cylindrical bore cross-section, for a typical solid propellant rocket motor grain configuration is carried out. The recently developed TEXGAP-3D (Texas Grain Analysis Program, 3-Dimensional) static linear elastic stress analysis computer program is employed in the analysis. Two loading conditions, combustion pressure and thermal, are considered, along with corresponding transition interface displacements obtained from previous two-dimensional finite element analyses of the uniform grain regions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developments in mesh generation are usually driven by the needs of new applications and/or novel algorithms. The last decade has seen a renewed interest in mesh generation and adaptation by the computational engineering community, due to the challenges introduced by complex industrial problems.Another common challenge is the need to handle complex geometries. Nowadays, it is becoming obvious that geometry should be persistent throughout the whole simulation process. Several methodologies that can carry the geometric information throughout the simulation stage are available, but due to the novelty of these methods, the generation of suitable meshes for these techniques is still the main obstacle for the industrial uptake of this technology. This book will cover different aspects of mesh generation and adaptation, with particular emphasis on cutting-edge mesh generation techniques for advanced discretisation methods and complex geometries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: &Quot; This book describes both structured and unstructured mesh generation techniques. Structured mesh generation is covered briefly and the algebraic, multi-block technique is discussed in more detail. The main part of the book covers unstructured mesh generation using the advancing front, paving and Delaunay techniques. The Delaunay method is described in two and three dimensions. Both theoretical and implementation issues are discussed in detail. An integrated framework that is used for the two dimensional unstructured methods is also described. Common features of the framework include: accurate control over mesh size; boundary refinement procedures; and postprocessing tasks such as smoothing. Methods to convert triangular meshes to quadrilateral meshes are also presented. Mesh quality of the different mesh generation procedures is addressed with some examples.". "The book will be of interest to engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians working on mesh generation and finite element methods. The C source code for the procedures described in the book is available via the authors's website."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Numerical analysis methods for cracks in solid propellant grains should include the proper stress singularity and account for material incompressibility. An hybrid stress finite element method for the three-dimensional analysis of straight crack fronts has been developed. A modification to extend the method to curved crack fronts is proposed.
