Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Chances, Vol. 1 of 3 Do you remember a conversation which occurred (and a singular coincidence it was the very last time we met in London, in which we were instituting a comparison between the Blind and the Deaf Most of the company - (it was at the Torringtons, and the party a large one) - were warmly advocating the loss of hearing rather than sight; the men especially were unanimous in preferring any bereavement which left them freedom of movement and action, to one which should render them grateful for the guidance of even a child or a dog. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Chances, Vol. 3 of 3 Never had it occurred to her, presumptuous as she was, to question her powers of endurance, or her efficiency for the duties she was undertaking; until her acquaint ance with Manley Frere aroused her to a better know ledge of herself, and the capacities of her nature; and caused her to pant for a higher and happier destiny, than to become the companion of one with whom she held no common bond of sympathy: whose principles and prejudices were foreign to any of her own - whose society wearied her - and whom, till the last moment they spent together, she could never regard with any livelier sentiment than that of a respectful indifference. In what alone concerned Maria Palliser, there was meet retribution and most impartial judgment in the turn Of fortune which had caused her to feel and acknow ledge her error but it was hard upon Colonel Hussey to be made the victim Of her selfish mistake nor could her sternest accuser be more painfully conscious Of the wrong she had done him, than his false but repentant mistress. Excuses for breaking her engagement with him reasons persuasive and satisfactory enough - had thronged Upon her when she communed only with herself; but in finally setting her thoughts in array for the enlighten ment Of another, Maria could not but perceive how very few of these arguments were calculated to convince even the world at large - least of all the man she was pre paring to forsake. If she grounded her Obj cotions to marrying him on scruples of recent date, and professed to have only just become sensible Of the nature of her rash promise, and to have had some sudden revelation of the holiness and high mystery of this same marriage contract, which some can enter upon so thoughtlessly - but which she now perceived to require a heart more tender and atfec tions far more lively than it was in her gift to bestow then he would have reason to complain that she had suffered her convictions to lie dormant so many months, and, with a strange refinement Of caprice, had kept the chain of their compact inviolate, till the wedding-day was fixed. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning history of the Enlightenment quest to devise a mathematical model of rationality What did it mean to be reasonable in the Age of Reason? Enlightenment mathematicians such as Blaise Pascal, Jakob Bernoulli, and Pierre Simon Laplace sought to answer this question, laboring over a theory of rational decision, action, and belief under conditions of uncertainty. Lorraine Daston brings to life their debates and philosophical arguments, charting the development and application of probability theory by some of the greatest thinkers of the age. Now with an incisive new preface, Classical Probability in the Enlightenment traces the emergence of new kind of mathematics designed to turn good sense into a reasonable calculus.

Book Synopsis Catalogus Translationum Et Commentariorum by : Virginia Brown
Download or read book Catalogus Translationum Et Commentariorum written by Virginia Brown and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered a definitive source for scholars and students, this highly acclaimed series illustrates the impact of Greek and Latin texts on the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In publication since 1960 and now in its eighth volume, the Catalogus Translationum et Commentariorum furnishes concrete evidence of when, where, and how an ancient author was known and appreciated in monastic, university, and humanist circles. Each article presents a historical survey of the influence and circulation of a particular author down to the present, followed by an exhaustive listing and brief description of Latin commentaries before 1600 on each of his works. For Greek authors, a full listing of pre-1600 translations into Latin is also provided. Sources of translations and commentaries include both printed editions and texts available only in medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. In the newest addition to the series, Volume VIII, six authors are treated in separate articles: Damianus, Geminus Rhodius, Hanno, Sallust, Themistius, and Thucydides. This volume is especially notable for its variety. Thucydides and Sallust were major historians and the interest their works generated -- in such diverse figures as Macchiavelli, Thomas More, and Thomas Hobbes -- has continued unabated. Damianus and Geminus Rhodius influenced optics and astronomy. Themistius provided a useful service to later students of Aristotle by paraphrasing Aristotle's treatises on logic, psychology, and natural science. Hanno's account of a voyage around the coast of West Africa has been regarded as a motivating factor behind the explorations of Vasco da Gama and Pedro Alvares Cabral and was cited in controversies involving the Portugueseand Spanish claims to the coasts of Africa and America. A list of addenda and corrigenda to four previously published articles (Columella, Tacitus, Vegetius, Xenophon) concludes the volume.
