Thraxas, perhaps the doughtiest warrior ever born within that city's walls, (as he describes himself) is almost home. The army led by Lisutaris reaches Turai, ready to retake their city. Thraxas begins the book in some trouble, having been flung in the stockade following a disreputable brawl, but will soon be back in action, investigating a politically awkward murder while making ready for battle. At his side is Makri, whose mathematical skills are called upon for some complicated sorcerous calculations designed to bring down the walls. There are dragons in the sky, hostile forces ahead, and, worst of all as far as Thraxas is concerned, a general beer shortage. When this is all over, Thraxas intends to spend the rest of his days sitting comfortably in his favourite tavern. But first, he has a city to retake.

Book Synopsis Lonely Werewolf Girl by : Martin Millar

Book excerpt: The hard-edged, hilarious, and utterly believable first entry in a trilogy featuring troubled teenage werewolf Kalix MacRinnalch introduces readers to a world where werewolves--friendly werewolves, fashionista werewolves, cross-dressing werewolves, werewolves of every sort--walk among us. Teenage werewolf Kalix MacRinnalch is being pursued through the streets of London by murderous hunters. She could certainly use a little help right about now, but her sister, the Werewolf Enchantress, is too busy designing clothes for the Fire Queen. So it looks like Kalix is on her own, as usual. This problem all started back at home in the Scottish Highlands where Kalix's family, the MacRinnalch Clan, is plotting and feuding after the head of the clan died suddenly without having named a successor. As the court intrigue threatens to blow up into all-out civil war, the competing factions determine that Kalix is the swing vote necessary to determine the new leadership of the clan. Unfortunately, Kalix isn’t really into clan politics--laudanum’s more her thing. But since Kalix might just be the reason the head of the clan ended up dead, she'll need to abandon her bad habits, if only long enough to stay alive.

The city is under siege by an army of rampaging Orcs, and now he not only has to regularly take part in standing guard duty on the stout walls, the only thing between the Orcs and Turais destruction, but he also has a mystery to solve. A ship has managed to slip past the hordes of Orcs and made port in Turai. It was carrying a powerful magical talisman called the "Ocean Storm" which, used by the enemy, could raise a storm powerful enough to topple the city walls and let the Orcs in to pillage and slaughter. And it, along with the captain of the ship, mysteriously disappeared as soon as the ship had docked. If Thraxas doesnt locate the "Ocean Storm" before it falls into the wrong hands, Turai will be doomed. Which could seriously interfere with the big card game that Thraxas had been looking forward to. . . .

Her new friends support her – and all is fine until the Guild of Werewolf Hunters start picking off her clan, one by one. Most of the Scottish Werewolf Clan have a very low opinion of Kalix Macrinnalch, youngest daughter of the Thane. There is little sympathy for her illiteracy, her substance abuse, her self-harming, her eating disorder, her anxiety and depression and her propensity for extreme violence. Safe from her clan in London, and living with two friendly students, she's been much calmer. If only she were allowed to live quietly, she might get on top of her problems. Unfortunately, that's difficult for the young werewolf. She's still the number one target for the werewolf hunters, and they're stepping up their efforts to find her. And no matter how Kalix tries to make her life more normal, there will always come a time when, under threat, her insanity and battle-madness will descend on her, and the skinny young girl will again transform into the most feared and ferocious werewolf in the country.

The prospect of having an adventure, and maybe even finding a girlfriend, is almost too much to bear. Ruby, a talented woman with an aversion to shoes, is of the opinion that neither ancient Gods nor terrible flatmates should interfere with the important things in life, like taking revenge on her ex-boyfriend. Will Nirvana ever be free? Will the rocks, plants and fairies ever smile again? Will Lux the Poet manage to charm his way to another benefit cheque? Find out in Lux and Alby Sign on and Save the Universe.
