Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Thought For a man to profess beliefs which his heart and mind do not endorse is, in their eyes, akin to sacrilege and degrades and darkens the man's own soul. Hence to-day, when Bible or creed contradict verified facts of science, history, or conscience, man's heart pulls in one direction, his head in another. He feels acutely the wrench of breaking with his Old creed, but his principles forbid him to force his head to keep step with his heart when the two clash. Thousands of men have doubtless read the Bible more than I, but simple reading is of very little consequence since to read and to examine are such different things. Many men can repeat scripture by the yard, who cannot, or do not, examine it by the inch. A parrot can repeat what it has heard, but never constructs new sentences from new thoughts, and this is the manner of most Bible study. The next method is a study for a specific purpose (but not the true pur pose), or to fortify some creed. The Baptist has his special line of thought to demonstrate as the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Poetry and Literature of the Bible During last winter, the author of the following pages do livered, on week-day evenings, a course Of eleven lectures on the Poetry and Literature Of the Bible, to the congregation Of which he is Minister. In the humble hope, that some Of the views therein advanced might, if committed to print, prove more generally and permanently useful, especially to the young people of his charge, he has been induced to condense the substance of a few of these lectures within the limits of a short pamphlet. In an age, such as this, when mind is so active, it cannot be a useless effort to commend the Bible to the intellect, and to endeavour to secure for it the respect of the taste and understanding. To do SO may often win for it a way to the heart. We must respect before We can love. On this idea the following tract is founded; and is ofiered as something but imperfectly suggestive towards such a result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts for Teachers of the Bible I hope this little book may be of service to teachers, though it does not even touch upon the problem of how the Bible should be taught to children; nor does it attempt to forestall the enquiries which a good and sympathetic teacher is certain to evoke. In these matters teachers must help teachers. What I have attempted to do is to set out plainly some broad principles, the recognition of which may help the faith and understanding of the teachers themselves. They will find out how to teach, when they see clearly what it is they want to teach. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Workingman's View of the Bible All accurate knowledge is based on established facts. A conception of mathematics must begin with an idea of a digit or an individual thing. So it must be with the Bible. This fact, it seems to me, is that God, or a First Cause, expressed Himself in the material universe and in the soul; that is, the thoughts and ideas of God are ex pressed in the laws of nature and in the soul, just as the thoughts and ideas of man are expressed in his actions and products. Not that god Is. This is implied. But that God expresses Him self. This is stated. The Bible treats the expression of God in the material universe as completed, while the soul is yet growing and developing under His guidance. The development of this soul is, therefore, the subject of the Bible. Thus I look upon the narratives of Adam and Eve, and Cain and Abel, as portraying the laws of the soul and showing the process gone through in arriving at certain consequences. The further narratives covering the entire Book show the growth of the soul from that condition to its pres ent development, and the complete compliance with these laws by Jesus Christ. There are many good men to whom the notions, learned half unconsciously at a Christian mother's knee, are \very' dear and, sufficiently true for the guidance of life - many to whom newer views would be but a source of disturbance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beliefs About the Bible You will not deem it inappropriate, I trust, if, before I say another word, I stop long enough to give hearty expression to my gladness at meeting you again. Next to the joy of going away when one is tired and worn is the joy of coming back again when one is rested, to resume once more the chosen labor of life. But, as I speak of the joy, I must think also of the shadow that always accompanies joy, the eternal twin of our gladness in our comings back again from being away. I am glad to see your faces, but I am sad to think that there are faces I shall not see. There are some that I have learned to prize and trust that I shall not see again, - I will not say forever, for I do not believe it is true: but I shall not see them again until I also pass over the border-land and into the darkness that encircles this little lighted spot that we call the stage of our human life. I rejoice with some of you over the recovery of those who have been close down to the border while you have stood, with dim eyes and tremulous lips, wondering whether they were to cross or to return. I rejoice with you that they have come back again into the light of life. This morning, - you may not have noted it, the years go by so swiftly, - I stand upon the threshold of the ninth year of my service with you as your minister. I might go back and fill an hour with retrospect, explaining and trying to apologize for errors, shortcomings, and failures. I might go back, with some show of reason, and recount our triumphs, our victories, and our achievements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and the Bible In every country the Great War has created not merely military and economic problems, but also spiritual problems of many aspects. M. Henri Bergson has remarked that upon the outbreak of the war, France at once changed spiritually - she became like a cathedral, solemn and grave. No one who was in France in those fateful days of August, 1914, could escape that transformation. The air was charged with spiritual awe. A similar effect the War has had in every other country touched by it, though, of course, each has expressed it in its own way. It is not certain to what degree we have been spiritually affected by the War. Perhaps there has not yet been that impact upon our mind and soul, that challenge, that catharsis, which others have experienced, and which has found voice in so many of the literary productions of the past four years. But that it is sure to come, there is not the shadow of a doubt. "Man liveth not by bread alone" - this the War has proved anew. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inspiration of the Bible The following Essay on the Inspiration of the Bible, has been prepared from the first part of an interesting book entitled Lucilla, or the Reading of the Bible. Originally written in French by Rev. Mr. Monod, recently translated and published by the London Religious Tract Society. The design of the Author in that work is to show, in the first - place, that the Bible is the W ord of God, and consequently of Divine authority; and in the second place, that it is at once the privilege and the duty of all men to read it with reference to their personal salvation. The first part, the substance of which is given in the following pages, is in the form of Letters, and a Dialogue between a French Abbe, Mr. Lasalle and Lucilla, the iwife of Mr. L., which for several reasons it was thought best to abridge and condense into a continuous discourse. In doing this, great care has been taken to preserve Mr. Monod's argument entire, and his language so far as was practicable. The portions omitted belong not to the substance but the form of the discussion; and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense Thoughts on the Bible for Common Sense People There is nothing more sacred than truth. We should love it above all things, and be willing to make any sacrifice for its sake. We should abide by its teachings, how far soever they may lead us from what some men call ortho doxy, and into what the same men call heterodoxy. For truth is a blessing to all, being the perception of things as they are: but error is a constant curse, Whether in the beggar's heart or the doctor's; spoken by the fireside, or from the tasselled pulpit. We never can be sure that our ideas are correct, or our beliefs true, until we have examined them fairly, and scruti nized them without prejudice; otherwise we may be hug ging an error to our bosoms, because we were taught it, and casting the truth from us with disdain. The more nearly allied to our present welfare and future happiness any thing is or professes to be, the more narrowly should we examine, the more carefully should we investigate it; remembering that there is nothing good that is false, and that awise man will always be glad to exchange an error for a truth.
