Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts of and for the Inner Life Sermons The sermons have, most of them, been preached in the Chapel of Yale University to the audiences assembled there from time to time. Two or three of them have within themselves, as they are now printed, the evidences, very strongly marked, of their special purpose in relation to a company of young College men. Two or three others bear in them indications that they were written with refer ence to persons in a different sphere of life, or of a more advanced age. These things, however, are merely incidental, and, it is believed, will in no case lessen the interest or helpfulness if, indeed, there be anything of this character pertaining to them - which they may have for any reader. The volume now goes forth whithersoever it will or whithersoever it may. May it bear a message of peace and of love in itself. Frederick Augustus Rauch, born in Kirchbracht, Hesse Darmstadt, July 27th, 1806, was a graduate of the University of Marburg; subsequently he prosecuted the study of Philosophy and Theology in Giessen and Heidelberg, and was then appointed Professor of Philosophy successively in these two celebrated Universities. Becoming obnoxious to Government by the expression of rather liberal political sentiments, he emigrated to America in 1831, and spent nearly a year in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he was elected Professor of the German Language in Lafayette College. In the fall of 1832, he was elected Principal of a Classical School, located at York, Pa., and filled the office for three years with superior ability and great success. In 1835, the School was removed to Mercersburg, and converted into a college by a charter from the Legislature of the State, under the name and title of Marshall College. Dr. Rauch was chosen President. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Staples's life. Of these his wife stands first. She would not have me say it, but I must. And I regret unspeakably that any distrust of her own ability or-fitness should have prevented her doing what I am sure she would have done most perfectly. As I have talked with her about her husband, her appreciation of his character and work has seemed so perfect, her sympathy with all his hopes and plans 'so lively and profound, that I never shall be reconciled to her unwillingness to be his bio grapher and the editress of his writings. I am only partly reconciled by the consideration that she would not have told, as I must tell, or be no true biographer of him, what noble furtherance her husband found in her, what intellectual and spiritual companionship, what rest in weariness, what patient cheer in sickness and in death. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Chamber and the Inner Life How the Church of Christ, and the spiritual life of thousands of its members, suffers from the root disease; the neglect of secret intercourse with God. It is the lack of secret prayer, the neglect of the maintenance of that hidden life rooted in Christ, rooted and grounded in love, that explains the feebleness of the Christian life to resist the world, and its failure to bring forth fruit abundantly. Nothing can change this but the restoration, in the life of the believer, of the inner chamber to the place which Christ meant it to have. As Christians learn, instead of trusting their own efforts, what it is daily to strike their roots deeper into Christ, and to make the secret personal fellowship with God their chief care, true godliness will flourish. If the root be holy, so are the branches. If the morning hour be holy to the Lord, the day with its duties will be so too. If the root be healthy, so are the branches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Life in Man: And Other Sermons Often as any soul comes under the regenerating power of the gospel and is born into the kingdom. This is what is brought out with an almost start ling distinctness in the group of passages standing at the head of this discourse. Man, like God, is per sonal and spiritual. He has the source of his being in God. He has come into life in virtue of the breath Of God in his soul. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. The further development of the subject will be pro moted best by asking two or three questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is right to guard the house against the attacks of foes, or rather to point out the strength and security of the divinely-laid foundation. It is also right to point out the gate wide and open, and to declare to all the freeness and fulness of divine grace. But to describe the home itself, the inner sanctuary, seems to be more essential, and also more in accordance with the practice of the, apostles, who declared the whole counsel of God, and regarded the preaching of the gospel, in its fulness, and with the power of the Holy Ghost, as at once the great argument to con Vince, and the great attraction to persuade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outer and the Inner World, and Other Sermons: Being the Essex Hall Pulpit for 1893 If, however, we could take, in such instances, but one look, or if, on repeating it, the phenomenon always re-appeared as at first, we should remain hopeless victims of mistake; and should for ever carry about with us a phantasm of sense as if it were the presence of a reality in nature. We owe our deliverance from such a fate to the appeal which we are always ready to make from one medium and one trial to another. When the film which covers the landscape to us does not appear before our neighbour's eye; when the celestial motion given by one telescope vanishes on removing to another; an instant light is thrown upon the source of the diversity: we rely on the faithfulness of nature, and refer the unsteadi uses to ourselves and our works. It is by change in the apparition that we discover the reality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
