Our assignment in class was to take a passage from the book and interpret it in our words, thoughts, and feelings! Also, in my writing course, we provided daily thoughts and keep a journal! My professors loved my writing, and I received excellent grades! Everyone has thoughts, and I know some of mine may or may not touch you! I do hope that some of my words may bring some insights about me and my life

Book excerpt: A smart, snappy, and comprehensive guide for the millions of adults who are thinking about going—or going back—to college and want to know how to do it right As anyone who has done it knows, going back to school is a major undertaking. For younger and older adults alike, starting or returning to school presents different challenges than those encountered by teens fresh out of high school and heading straight to college. Countless Americans take on this task while working, raising kids, caring for parents, volunteering, serving in the military—and in some cases all of the above. Although the "non-traditional" undergraduate student is in fact the new normal, the glut of college guides out there don't include practical advice for the busy moms, frustrated employees, and ambitious adults who are applying to college or hoping to finish earning a degree. Never Too Late will help readers jump-start a new professional path or speed down the one they're already on by guiding them through vital questions: What should I study? How can I afford the time and money required to get a college degree? How do I compare schools? With key chapters on flexibility ("It's About Time!" and "Face-to-Face or Cyberspace?") and rankings of the best colleges for grown-ups diving back into the books, Never Too Late is an essential reference for adults seeking a richer life—and a meaningful place in our rapidly changing economy and world.

Book excerpt: It's Never Too Late To Graduate! is a collection of eighteen interviews from students who returned to school after the traditional age, most of them in order to pursue their academic dreams. They range in age from 27 to 90! Some had to put college "on the back burner" in order to raise a family. Some had never given up on a particular occupation, and their dream never left them. Others had a degree, but wanted to step up to an advanced degree in order to compete in the job market with younger graduates who were earning better salaries. Their backgrounds and stories are varied, and there were many surprises for them when they went back to school. All of them found studying easier than when they were younger. For those attending college for the first time, The book's chapters also include investigating careers, and what college or program is the right one for them. There are chapters on admission requirements for senior students, financial aid and state supported scholarships for seniors, application preparation, identifying their support system, modern technology and online classes, tips for making the college experience easier, interacting with younger students, and best of all, wonderful inspiring and encouraging stories and advice from the students who were interviewed. The book is also helpful for high school seniors who are applying to college. They are having to navigate the same steps that older students do. An effort has been made to include male and female students and various ethnicities. The author returned to school at the age of 42, to attend a small community college and get an Associate degree Sciences. She fell in love with learning and graduated from Georgia State University with her B.A. in Anthropology at age 53, and her Master's in Heritage Preservation at 55, using this latter degree to put three historic homes on the National Register of History Places in Dunwoody, Georgia, and Co-Founding the Dunwoody Preservation Trust. She is a Native Atlantan and her passion is older adult education. She describes this book on Adults returning to school as "small, but mighty."

Book excerpt: “To My Professor: Student Voices for Great College Teaching” begins with remarks by students about their professors. They tend not to be the kind of remarks that professors usually hear, and some are harsh. Others are full of gratitude for teachers who inspire and motivate. The “To My Professor” statements are really just starting points that lead to advice from master teachers. Teaching college is difficult and this book has some potential solutions. More than 50 chapters cover situations including expectations, communication, technology, race, gender and religion, mental and physical health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Service-learning is an exciting pedagogy and field of study, offering insight into how academic study and community engagement blend to create social change. In its most traditional conceptualization, servicelearning activities typically manifest within communities where outside individuals address a need. Service learning is purported to have a transforming effect on individual student perspectives by providing students the opportunity to interact with people and enter into situations that allow students to test their predisposition towards others. However, the literature on the impact of service-learning on participants' acceptance of diversity and development of open-mindedness reports mixed outcomes. The purpose of this book is to explore cultural tensions and dynamics within the field of service-learning. It is not meant to be an exhaustive review of the interplay between culture and service learning, but rather a starting point for an ongoing conversation about how this complex topic impacts the field. In 18 chapters, educators, students, and administrators investigate the cultural values of service-learning itself and the tensions created when this is at odds with the values of others within K-12 and higher education in the United States and abroad. Authors include community organization representatives, researchers, directors of offices of community engagement, university administrators, junior and senior faculty, and former service-learning undergraduate students. Submissions reflect a range of genres, including theoretical / conceptual pieces, position papers, case studies, and other traditional academic essays, challenging how students and community members are affected by the cultural tensions within service-learning engagement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the Handbook of Communication and Aging Research captures the ever-changing and expanding domain of aging research. Since it was first recognized that there is more to social aging than demography, gerontology has needed a communication perspective. Like the first edition, this handbook sets out to demonstrate that aging is not only an individual process but an interactive one. The study of communication can lead to an understanding of what it means to grow old. We may age physiologically and chronologically, but our social aging--how we behave as social actors toward others, and even how we align ourselves with or come to understand the signs of difference or change as we age--are phenomena achieved primarily through communication experiences. Synthesizing the vast amount of research that has been published on communication and aging in numerous international outlets over the last three decades, the book's contributors include scholars from North America and the United Kingdom who are active researchers in the perspectives covered in their particular chapter. Many of the chapters work to deny earlier images of aging as involving normative decrement to provide a picture of aging as a process of development involving positive choices and providing new opportunities. A recuring theme in many chapters is that of the heterogeneity of the group of people who are variously categorized as older, aged, elderly, or over 65. The contributors review the literature analytically, in a way that reveals not only current theoretical and methodological approaches to communication and aging research but also sets the future agenda. This handbook will be of great interest to scholars and researchers in gerontology, developmental psychology, and communication, and, in this updated edition, will continue to play a key role in the study of communication and aging.

Book excerpt: With the growth of the older adult population and the increasing need for healthcare providers with geriatric training, students and practitioners must become familiar with the multifaceted issues of elderly sexuality. This text features a combination of research findings, clinical case studies and specific guidelines for assessment and intervention. A variety of topics typically neglected in this population, such as body image and eating disorders, HIV, the long-term impact of sexual trauma in late life, sexuality in institutional settings, sexuality for partners of older adults with dementia and other chronic illnesses, traditional and non-traditional relationships, and information about medications that can cause sexual dysfunction are reviewed in detail. In addition, practitioners are given practical suggestions for interviewing older adults about sexual issues, working with character-disordered older adults, managing sexualized transference in the therapeutic relationship, mediating conflict between professionals on interdisciplinary teams, and assessing HIV and HIV-induced dementia. This volume will be of interest to both clinicians and students of psychology, social work, gerontology, sociology, and physical therapy.

The volume was written for two specific interrelated purposes aimed at cross-fertilization between the psychology of control and the field of gerontology. The first purpose was to summarise available research and theory on the psychology of control for researchers and professionals interested in gerontology at the time. The second was to enrich the field of the psychology of control.
