Download or read book My Dark Room written by Julie Park and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In what kinds of spaces do we become most aware of the thoughts in our own heads? My Dark Room is a book about the intimate sites of inner experience in eighteenth-century England and their role in the rise both of interiority and the novel. Julie Park considers sites such as grottos, cottages, closets, and especially the camera obscura, that beguiling enclosure into which the outside world is projected through a lens. This type of "dark room" and the projections within it serve Park as a paradigm for the fleeting states of interiority that eighteenth-century figures felt compelled to generate and experience. Park integrates material analyses of these "interior" spaces with close readings of novelistic and proto-novelistic texts. Taken together, these case studies amount to a fresh narrative of the novel's development as a genre of interiority from 1650 to 1811. They include Andrew Marvell's country house poem, Upon Appleton House; Margaret Cavendish's loosely fictional letters about domestic life, Sociable Letters, and the utopian fantasy/critique of the new science, The Blazing World; and Alexander Pope's long poem, Eloisa to Abelard. Park's innovative method of "spatial formalism" reveals how physical settings enable psychic interiors to achieve vitality in fictive and real lives"--

Book excerpt: Written by a celebrated Islamic scholar to his students in Turkey after his political exile in 1925, these letters follow the long-established traditions of correspondence between spiritual masters and their students in remote lands. Both expressions of friendship and long-distance tutorials on points of scholarly debate, most of the letters are answers to questions about theology and hold forth on such matters as the nature of hell, the suffering of innocents, the miracles of Prophet Muhammad, and the divine purpose of the universe.

Book excerpt: The pioneering novelist and short story writer, Sherwood Anderson strongly influenced American writing in the Interwar period, producing works notable for their subjective and self-revealing content. Book Synopsis Essentials of The Islamic Faith by : M. Fethullah Gülen
Download or read book Essentials of The Islamic Faith written by M. Fethullah Gülen and published by Tughra Books. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of the Islamic Faith is a selection from some of the speeches M. Fethullah Glen has given to large audiences over a life-time of dedicated service. In these speeches, he explains the principal elements of Islamic belief - belief in the existence and Unity of God; in Resurrection and the Day of Judgment; in Divine Scriptures and other familiar themes of Islamic discourse. What is special and unique about the presentation of them in this book is that the author is constantly aware of the encroachment (and the seductive appeal) of cultural attitudes which are hostile not to Islam only but to any religious and contemplative way of life.
