Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Sorel is widely recognized as America's premier illustrator. But when he wasn't painting covers and doing drawings for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Time, Rolling Stone, and many other mass circulation magazines, he was indulging, over the last 30 years, in his first love—making comic strips. Sorel's strips are iconoclastic, cynical, and universally excoriating. No target escapes his watchful wrath: politicians, theological dynasties, ideologues left and right, lawyers, publishers, and the usual gang of movers and shakers—panderers, philistines, money-grubbers. (Nor does he spare himself.) Culled from the pages of The Nation, The Village Voice, Penthouse, and other magazines, Sorel proves he is that most dangerous of creatures—a cartoonist with a chip on his shoulder, an inveterate troublemaker, a burner of bridges. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 13.9px Arial; color: #424242}

Book excerpt: Discover the essential thinking tools you’ve been missing with The Great Mental Models series by Shane Parrish, New York Times bestselling author and the mind behind the acclaimed Farnam Street blog and “The Knowledge Project” podcast. This first book in the series is your guide to learning the crucial thinking tools nobody ever taught you. Time and time again, great thinkers such as Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett have credited their success to mental models–representations of how something works that can scale onto other fields. Mastering a small number of mental models enables you to rapidly grasp new information, identify patterns others miss, and avoid the common mistakes that hold people back. The Great Mental Models: Volume 1, General Thinking Concepts shows you how making a few tiny changes in the way you think can deliver big results. Drawing on examples from history, business, art, and science, this book details nine of the most versatile, all-purpose mental models you can use right away to improve your decision making and productivity. This book will teach you how to: Avoid blind spots when looking at problems. Find non-obvious solutions. Anticipate and achieve desired outcomes. Play to your strengths, avoid your weaknesses, … and more. The Great Mental Models series demystifies once elusive concepts and illuminates rich knowledge that traditional education overlooks. This series is the most comprehensive and accessible guide on using mental models to better understand our world, solve problems, and gain an advantage.

Book excerpt: "What impressed me most...are the intricate and artistic detail with which Art describes the settings and the depth and sensitivity of the emotions expressed in each memoir." -Reba Boyd Wooden, Executive Director, Center for Inquiry, Indiana A retired psychologist shares over eighty poignant, humorous, and entertaining memoirs highlighting his life, from his birth at home in Hudson Falls, New York, to his current experiences as a widower and freethinker. Arthur L. Sterne, Ph.D. has spent his life curious about people and as a result, many of his memoirs reflect his power of keen observation and wonderful sense of humor. His compilation of anecdotes begins with his early life in Jacksonville, Florida, then with his experiences at Vanderbilt University where he met Ann, a nursing student who stole his heart and later became his wife of forty-four years, and continues in Indianapolis, where he once saw Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich perform. As he moves through the retelling of his favorite memories, Sterne covers such relatable topics as politics, religion, aging, and rebuilding a life after the death of a spouse. In Things I Know or Think I Know or Thought I Knew or Who Knows? Sterne encourages others to think, pose questions and look for answers, ultimately viewing the world in a new light.

This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I do not like writing a preface — it seems too much like an apology. I have no special apology to tender for offering this collection of New Thought nuggets. They may possess no literary merit, but they have helped men and women. With the exception of “The Secret of the I Am,” these essays appeared from month to month in “New Thought,” of which magazine I am associate editor. They were written hastily, principally upon the demand of the printer for “copy,” and, for the most part, were printed just as they were written, there being no time for revision or polishing up. You may pick up any one of them and find many sentences needing straightening out — many thoughts which could be better expressed by the change of a few words. Knowing these things, I first thought that I would go over each essay and add a little here, and take away a little there, polishing up and burnishing as I went along. But when I looked over them, my heart failed me. There they were just as they were written — just as they were dug out of my mind — and I hadn't the heart to change them. I remembered the circumstances surrounding the writing of every one of them, and I let them alone. A “nugget” polished up would be no longer a nugget. And these thoughts are nuggets — I dug them myself. I will not say much regarding the quality of the metal — that is for you — but you see them just as they came from the mine — rough, unpolished, mixed with the rock, queerly shaped. If you think that they contain metal of sufficiently good quality, refine them, melt them and fashion them into something useful or ornamental. For myself, I like things with the bark on — with the marks of the hammer — with the original quartz adhering to the metal. But others are of different taste — they like everything to feel smooth to the touch. They will not like these nuggets. Alas, I cannot help it — I cannot produce the beautifully finished article — I have nothing to offer other than the crude product of the mine. Here they are, polish them up yourself if you prefer them in that shape — I will not touch them.

Book excerpt: Britain's most famous mathematician takes us to the edge of knowledge to show us what we cannot know. Is the universe infinite? Do we know what happened before the Big Bang? Where is human consciousness located in the brain? And are there more undiscovered particles out there, beyond the Higgs boson? In the modern world, science is king: weekly headlines proclaim the latest scientific breakthroughs and numerous mathematical problems, once indecipherable, have now been solved. But are there limits to what we can discover about our physical universe? In this very personal journey to the edges of knowledge, Marcus du Sautoy investigates how leading experts in fields from quantum physics and cosmology, to sensory perception and neuroscience, have articulated the current lie of the land. In doing so, he travels to the very boundaries of understanding, questioning contradictory stories and consulting cutting edge data. Is it possible that we will one day know everything? Or are there fields of research that will always lie beyond the bounds of human comprehension? And if so, how do we cope with living in a universe where there are things that will forever transcend our understanding? In What We Cannot Know, Marcus du Sautoy leads us on a thought-provoking expedition to the furthest reaches of modern science. Prepare to be taken to the edge of knowledge to find out if there's anything we truly cannot know.

Book excerpt: Tim Crane addresses the ancient question of how it is possible to think about what does not exist. He argues that the representation of the non-existent is a pervasive feature of our thought about the world, and that to understand thought's representational power ('intentionality') we need to understand the representation of the non-existent.
