Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thought and Religion or the Mutual Contributions of Philosophy and Theology The purpose of this work is to show the mutual contributions of philosophy and theology. The history of philosophy and the history of theology have much in common, and if the theologian will study the history of philosophy it may be the means of saving him from many extremes and many errors. Philosophy has made important contributions to almost every department of theology. In the following departments it has certainly made important contributions: The Nature of God; The Nature of Man; God's Revelation to Man; Man's Duties to God; Man's Duties to Man; The Doctrine of a Future State. Philosophy is the highest and truest science, for it specially pertains to effects, causes and principles; it has for its object the investigation of those fundamental principles upon which all knowledge and all being ultimately rest. Various definitions have been given by philosophers of the science of first principles. According to Ueberweg, one of the most full and complete writers on the history of philosophy, philosophy is the science of first principles; it is included under the general name of science, but differs from the remaining sciences in that it is not occupied with a limited province of things, but with the nature and laws of whatever actually exists. Lord Bacon confines philosophy to that part of human learning which specially pertains to the reason. Sir William Hamilton substantially accepts the Aristotelian view of philosophy, that it is equivalent to a knowledge of things in their origin and causes. The word philosophy, which means a love of wisdom, is first found in the writings of Herodotus. It is attributed to Pythagoras, who selected it as a more modest title than sophist or wiseman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Philosophy and Theology The essays which follow are, as the title denotes, studies, which, from time to time, during the years of professional life, have engaged the writers attention, and occupied his most thoughtful hours. Many of them have been already published in the Bibliotheca Sacra, and elsewhere. The themes discussed are how ever, for the most part, of permanent interest; and as such, the discussions have a value as contributions to philosophical and theological science. For the con venience of many, especially my former pupils in Col lege and Seminary, these essays are now gathered into a volume, with such notes as seemed to be required. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Theology and Christian Philosophy With the advance of the seventeenth century, the rational spirit broadened and took to itself larger intellectual elements. It extended beyond the sphere Of the Church, into the whole region Of spiri tual thought and philosophy. There remains to us, in this volume, the task of sketching this further stage in the intellectual and theological development Of the English mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Philosophy Incidentally, I notice the fact that you drifted away from the Church; but that is a matter that does not concern these letters more than to say that presumably you had satisfactory reasons. I recall, however, that you had been taught in the Sunday-school doctrines which in later years you had to un learn by the hardest experience. And now, after this rather tedious introduction, I come to notice the signs of the times as to the trend of religious thought for the last half century; but more particularly to speak of the attitude of, the Church towards the higher criticisms and her actions in relation to it. Book excerpt: "This title was first published in 2001. The encyclical "Fidel et Ratio", dealing with faith and reason and their specific catholocity, may well turn out to be the most important document of the modern Catholic Church on the subject announced in its title and on philosophy understood as a mirror of peoples' cultures. "Fidel et Ratio" wants to put in motion again faith that thinks (a different thing from the believer that thinks) and the issue of truth, thus opening up a higher dialogue with late modernity and postmodernity. Among the various stimuli proposed by the encyclical to start up again this belief that thinks, a significant one is the methodology of collaboration and circularity between reason and faith, and philosophy and theology, to their mutual advantage. The intention of Vittorio Possenti is a questioning and reflecting on the nexus between philosophy and revelation without excluding a priori the insights of the above-mentioned encyclical."--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith and Modern Thought The occasion of this little volume may be found in the spirit of modern discussion. The title - Faith and Modern Thought - was chosen by the writer long before he knew that a similar subject - Christianity and Modern Thought - had been proposed for a course of lectures in Boston, during the winter of 1875-6. The material is composed, in part, of essays prepared for special occasions, and subsequently published in Quarterly Reviews. If, in defence of certain positions, plain words have been employed, they are in reply to plain words employed in attack. If it be questioned whether the spirit of the book is in too close sympathy with the spirit of the time, the author has no reply to make; if it be asserted, he has no apology to offer. Earnest inquiry everywhere prevails. Old theories are scrutinized; new theories are criticised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
