Book Synopsis Living Among the Swiss by : Michael Wells Glueck
Download or read book Living Among the Swiss written by Michael Wells Glueck and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-08 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the author's experiences during the past eight years of living and working among the Swiss. It examines several aspects of the Swiss banking system from the viewpoints of consumers, investors and employees. It depicts cultural differences as well as the practical difficulties confronting the new immigrant as he seeks to put down roots. It seeks to edify the vicarious traveler as well as those seriously considering relocation here. Finally, it celebrates in some detail the beauty of this relatively simple and honest land, with especial emphasis on the cantons of Berner Oberland, Graubünden and Wallis, as well as the environs of Zürich. While the observations focus on the German-Swiss, they are surprisingly applicable to the French-and Italian-speaking cantons as well. This book falls somewhere between a travel guide and a book of reflections and memoirs, and thus is an unashamedly open and frank reaction to a foreign way of life. Michael Wells Glueck's gaze falls on many aspects of Swiss existence and it never loses its particular, unique focus. Living Among the Swiss will provide much information for the reader, who in the process will learn much about the world of Switzerland and beyond, and also be privileged to form a distinct picture of Mr. Wells Glueck himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dangerous and mysterious events are afoot in a peace-loving land... Someone is killing Swiss colonels, and painting a hammer and sickle at the scene. When Dr. Fritz Rubenstein, a physicist in Zurich, is gunned down in his office, the only clue is a letter in his trash requesting assistance for the French Resistance. Swiss Intelligence is new, underfunded, and understaffed, and they ask the U.S. government for help. Martin Schuller is sent to Switzerland to go undercover to find the killers, and what they're after. As war rages all around, Switzerland is an island of serenity. But Switzerland in the fall of 1941 is not all it appears. Delving beneath the serene appearance, Martin finds a secretive world of right-wing organizations, idealistic student activists, banks full of Nazi gold, and competing foreign agents. With the help of Franz Lemiel, a world-wise artist and activist, and Jason Bachman, an eager young American diplomat, Martin discovers a conspiracy to bring down the Swiss government in one dramatic event. Can he stop the conspirators from carrying out their attack, and changing the course of the war? Book Three in the Martin Schuller Spy Catcher series brings new dangers, and forces Martin to blur the lines between spy and spy catcher. It reintroduces a character from Gray Paree, a companion novel to this series. Content warning: This book contains a dark sequence involving torture in a Gestapo dungeon, including sexual assault. This is realistically portrayed, and may be traumatic for certain readers.

Book Synopsis Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, of the Reign of Henry VIII by : J. S. Brewer

This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published between 1862 and 1932, and reissued here in multiple parts, this monumental calendar of documents remains an essential starting point for the serious study of Tudor history. An experienced editor of historical texts, John Sherren Brewer (1809-79) had no prior training in the history of the period, yet he brought to the project the necessary industriousness and an impeccable command of Latin. Four volumes appeared before his death, whereupon James Gairdner (1828-1912), his former assistant, took up the editorial reins. Continuing Brewer's method of ordering chronologically all available documents from 1509 to 1547, and reproducing some passages while paraphrasing or omitting others, Gairdner brought the project to its conclusion, aided himself by R. H. Brodie (1859-1943) in preparing the later volumes. Part 1 of Volume 2 (1864) has been split into two for this reissue: this second half covers the period from November 1515 to December 1516.
