Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People, get ready! Thomas Jefferson lived a very successful, accomplished life and was one of the most intelligent of the Founding Fathers. He is probably most remembered as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson served as the governor of Virginia, congressman, the first secretary of state under George Washington, vice president under John Adams, and president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was also a diplomat, lawyer, architect and could speak several languages. As president, he signed the congressional Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves and was a big advocate for religious freedom. Thomas Jefferson thought highly of the Bible and made frequent use of its references and passages. He was a Bible enthusiast and often gave Bibles as gifts to family members. Jefferson's greatest gift may not have been his work on the Declaration of Independence but one that he called his "wee little book." He took on a project to collect the best and most concise moral teachings known. After a lengthy search, he found them in Jesus's teaching as recorded in the Gospels, which Jefferson believed were the most sublime and benevolent code of morals ever offered to man. Finally, after several years of planning, in 1820 and at age seventy-seven, he finished construction of his book by cutting excerpts from the Gospels of the New Testament and arranging them in chronological and topical order covering the story of Jesus's life, parables, and moral teaching. The work did include miracles and the supernatural such as heaven, hell, angels, devil, eternal life, and more. Jefferson's purpose was to clarify Jesus's major teachings into one short collection for his own nightly study. If there's anything the world needs today, it's the fulfillment of the Great Commission--to go and tell all the world about the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, including his life, teachings, sufferings, crucifixion, and resurrection. Jefferson's work was a priceless nightly study then and a priceless nightly study now.

Book excerpt: Co-author of the groundbreaking Empire and Multitude, Michael Hardt examines the Declaration of Independence and other texts by Jefferson, arguing that his powerful concept of democracy provides a biting critique of the current American administration. Introducing this collection of Jefferson’s writings, Michael Hardt makes a powerful case for re-examining the foundational writings of this American revolutionary in order to reignite the dialogue that first conceived of a “land of the free.”

Book excerpt: A revelatory new biography of Thomas Jefferson, focusing on his ethical and spiritual life “Set aside everything you think you know about Thomas Jefferson and religion, and read this book. This is the definitive account. It is well written, well researched, judicious, and entirely convincing.”—Timothy Larsen, Wheaton College Thomas Jefferson was arguably the most brilliant and inspiring political writer in American history. But the ethical realities of his personal life and political career did not live up to his soaring rhetoric. Indeed, three tensions defined Jefferson’s moral life: democracy versus slavery, republican virtue versus dissolute consumption, and veneration for Jesus versus skepticism about Christianity. In this book Thomas S. Kidd tells the story of Jefferson’s ethical life through the lens of these tensions, including an unapologetic focus on the issue where Jefferson’s idealistic philosophy and lived reality clashed most obviously: his sexual relationship with his enslaved woman Sally Hemings. In doing so, he offers a unique perspective on one of American history’s most studied figures.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Thomas Jefferson In a personal letter to the author of this volume, who had requested of the Democratic editor some prefatory words, Henry Watterson says: I do not like to see two names upon a title page. But I will say this: Though not a hero worshipper, I am too good a partisan to question my principal; and Jefferson has been not alone my file-leader, but a guiding star in my political firmament. I am used to measure all systems, to try all causes, to deter mine all policies, by the rules laid down in his philosophy. To me he stands out, after Washing ton and Franklin, the one clear figure in our early history, a perfect Doric column: wanting the bril liant levity of Hamilton; the sturdy, but narrow, spirit of Adams; sure-footed and far-seeing; not merely a statesman of the first order, but a very principal in the domain of original thinking and moral forces. The minor circumstances of his private life may interest me, but could in no wise change my perspective, because I am fixed in the belief that he was an upright and disinterested man, who considered his dutv to his country before all else. Such inconsistencies as appear in his career are but proofs of this, Since he never can wholly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Thomas Jefferson By far the greater number of books treating of American history and biography have been written by Northern men. Southern men of the Old Regime were not much given to the writing of books, and when the man of New England strode forward, pen in hand, nominated himself custodian of our national archives and began to compile the record, nobody seriously contested the office. This being so, it happened almost inevitably that New England got handsome treatment in our national histories. Tended by the reverential hands of her own sons, her historical graves have been kept very green indeed. The microscope, applied to every historical scene and character in New England, has let no excellence escape its magnifying power. This was very natural. The New England author, by the sheer strength of environment, education, heredity, inborn prejudice, and preference, saw everything from a New England point of view, and as it appeared to him so he colored the record. Nobody denies that New England deserved good treatment in our histories. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Historically, he is noted for writing the Declaration of Independence, which was a daring and courageous statement of the rights of Americans and, indeed, of all people. Hidden beneath the many cloaks of legalistic terminologies that he was fond of using, all the strengths and vulnerabilities of Jefferson as a man were there too. Like many people of today, he had a difficult childhood. He also liked to party while in college and loved to play the fiddle. The names of his friends and colleagues are featured in all the history books of yesteryear and today-Patrick Henry, John Adams, George Washington, Lewis and Clark, Benjamin Harrison, and Lafayette. Thomas Jefferson also knew the scoundrels of the day like Benedict Arnold and Aaron Burr. He was not only a lawyer, a statesman, and a founding father of the USA, but a political and moral philosopher. He even rewrote the Bible. But that's not all... This captivating history book covers topics such as: Young Jefferson Leaps into Adulthood "Two if by sea!" - Jefferson: Evolution into a Revolutionary Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence The "War" Governor of Virginia The Many Roles of Thomas Jefferson 1785-1800 The Third President of the US Jefferson Re-Elected in 1804 Intellectual, Writer, Farmer And much more!
