Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Gordon, the "Independent Whig" Unfortunately, we know very little about Thomas Gordon's own history, for, though a prodigal dispenser of Opinions, he was very sparing of the facts about his origins and career, so that we might very well call him Silentio rather than Silenus (an epithet applied to him because he happened to be a Commissioner of Wine Licenses) as Pope did in the Dunciad Gordon's own reticence was further accentuated by the disapproval of his Opinions on the part of his literary countrymen For example, Chalmers, in his General Bio graphical Dictionary dismisses the Independent Whig as a gross and indecent libel on the established religion, describes his style as extremely vulgar, and tells us that his Tacitus is miserably mangled Thomas Murray in his Literary History of Galloway (1822) was even more shocked by Gordon's views, thinking it a fortunate circumstance that the Independent Whig was now known only by name. N 0 family of the house of Gordon was anxious to claim kin with him, because the Gordons as a race have never greatly interested themselves in ideas - they are essen tially men of action - and least of all in radical ideas; so that be yond a note in a letter written by Sir Alexander Gordon of Culvennan to the effect that Gordon's brother was a surgeon in Glasgow, we are quite in the dark. Book Synopsis Under the Cope of Heaven by : Patricia U. Bonomi
Download or read book Under the Cope of Heaven written by Patricia U. Bonomi and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2003 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pathbreaking study, Patricia Bonomi argues that religion was as instrumental as either politics or the economy in shaping early American life and values. Looking at the middle and southern colonies as well as at Puritan New England, Bonomi finds an abundance of religious vitality through the colonial years among clergy and churchgoers of diverse religious background. The book also explores the tightening relationship between religion and politics and illuminates the vital role religion played in the American Revolution. A perennial backlist title first published in 1986, this updated edition includes a new preface on research in the field on African Americans, Indians, women, the Great Awakening, and Atlantic history and how these impact her interpretations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon were political writers who published in London during the early eighteenth century. Together they authored two serial sets of essays titled Cato's Letters and the Independent Whig. Trenchard and Gordon's works were well known in London and became popular in the British North American colonies. This study examines the use and influences of Trenchard and Gordon's works in eighteenth-century British America. More specifically, Professor Barry demonstrates that Trenchard and Gordon's works were taken out of context and taught colonists a mode of action, which set the groundwork for the American Revolution.

Download or read book The Radical Whigs, John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon written by Marie P. McMahon and published by Upa. This book was released on 1990 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an envisaging study of the ideologies of Thomas Gordon and John Trenchard. The work demonstrates that both writers were intimately identified with the Independent Whigs and vociferously denounced the absolutistic thinking and counterrevolutionary threats and activities of High Church Tories and Jacobites. The first two chapters detail the political and religious posture of High Church clergymen during the 1688-89 Revolution. The next three chapters offer vivid profiles of Gordon and Trenchard as being radical, court, and Harringtonian Whigs and assesses their roles as propagandists in early Hanoverian England. There are stimulating accounts concerning the personalities and collaborative efforts of these two men, the origins and functions of The Independent Whig and Cato's Letters, the responses of these writers to the political and religious policies of Walpole, and the repudiation by these Radical Whigs of the tyrannical and seditious behavior of Stuart sympathizers. In the conclusion, the author offers a review of significant points made in the study
Book Synopsis The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution by : Bernard Bailyn
Download or read book The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution written by Bernard Bailyn and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution, awarded both the Pulitzer and the Bancroft prizes, has become a classic of American historical literature. Hailed at its first appearance as “the most brilliant study of the meaning of the Revolution to appear in a generation,” it was enlarged in a second edition to include the nationwide debate on the ratification of the Constitution, hence exploring not only the Founders’ initial hopes and aspirations but also their struggle to implement their ideas in constructing the national government. Now, in a new preface, Bernard Bailyn reconsiders salient features of the book and isolates the Founders’ profound concern with power. In pamphlets, letters, newspapers, and sermons they returned again and again to the problem of the uses and misuses of power—the great benefits of power when gained and used by popular consent and the political and social devastation when acquired by those who seize it by force or other means and use it for their personal benefit. This fiftieth anniversary edition will be welcomed by readers familiar with Bailyn’s book, and it will introduce a new generation to a work that remains required reading for anyone seeking to understand the nation’s historical roots.

Book Synopsis The Politics of the People in Eighteenth-Century Britain by : H.T. Dickinson
Download or read book The Politics of the People in Eighteenth-Century Britain written by H.T. Dickinson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This challenging and original study examines the most important aspects of popular political culture in eighteenth-century Britain. The first part explores the way the British people could influence existing political institutions or could exploit their existing powers, by looking at the role of the people in parliamentary elections, in a wide range of pressure groups, in their local urban communities, and in popular demonstrations. The second part shows how the British people became increasingly politicised during the eighteenth century and how they tried to shape or defend their political world.
