Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years With the Horse The following instance may serve as a guide for taming all obstinate or vicious horses. It shows the superiority of moral suasion over cruel, brute force. A gentleman having bought an apparently untameable but splendid horse and declared his resolve to conquer or die, led him from his stable in the presence of an excited crowd, put a saddle on him, buckled it with uncommon tightness, and after trying the stirrups, to see that all was sound and right, with a single bound was in his saddle. Now commenced a scene of rearing, and springing, and pitching unlike anything ever before witnessed. In retaliation, the rider commenced using the cow-hide freely over the rump, about the sides and legs of the animal, and at length over his head, eyes, ears and mouth. It was evidently a battle between two equally determined, but unequally powerful opponents - a trial of animal strength - an exhibition of dexterity - ou the part of the animal, to throw off the disagreeable load; on the part of the disagreeable load - the man - to conquer, to subdue, to main tain his position. But the horse, being the stouter of the two, was the victor, and would have thrown his load a rod at least from his back, but for the rider's foot having caught in the stir rup; and in that plight, the horse would soon have kicked his brains out, if he had any, but for the interference and assistance of the by-standers, who soon liberated the prisoner from his critical position. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Stable and Saddle-Room It is for this class of persons - the altogether ignorant, those who know absolutely nothing about horses and stables - that I desire to write, and to impart the information which I consider that the experience of a lifetime spent amongst horses, in cluding many years of service in an English cavalry regiment, coupled with an ever-earnest desire to gather and store up all knowledge regarding the management of the animal I love so well, entitle me to offer for their help and guidance. Every true Englishman loves a horse, even if he knows no more about him than he does about a kangaroo, and but few of our countrymen can gaze on a handsome horse without admiration; and if questioned and answering truthfully regard ing his knowledge of horses, would, if ignorant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Gladiateur to Persimmon: Turf Memories of Thirty Years To cover the ground thoroughly between 1865 and 1896 would necessitate the production of about half-a-dozen volumes the size of this one, and I have thought it wiser to give as complete histories as possible of a few great horses, rather than to produce hasty and unfinished sketches of three or four times the number. I have devoted myself almost exclusively to horses rather than to men. In the first place, I may frankly confess to regarding the former as infinitely the more inter esting of the two, and, in the second, it is possible to write perfectly freely and truthfully about them without any serious fear of giving offence. When one is dealing with men the case is altogether different. If they are still living, a plain and un varnished tale of the careers of some few of them would probably lead to libel actions, whilst I Should be reluctant indeed to write one word against any of those who have gone from us. De mortuis nil nisi bonum is a maxim in which I am a firm believer, though I do not interpret it to mean that, because a man is dead, it is necessary to write a fulsome eulogy of him, but rather that, where it is not possible to give honest praise, a discreet silence should be preserved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse: As He Was, as He Is, and as He Ought to Be The race-course has caused the excessive creation of thorough-breds. Why should not the general-utility horse possess a suitable arena whereon to exhibit his speed and endurance at other paces than the gallop? The demand for such horses in a commercial point of view is not sufficiently attractive to create the much needed supply; but were trotting courses instituted in this country similar to those in America then the supply would, in a very few years, exceed the demand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories About Animals Before we can judge of his freedom of limb and native grace; in speed, literally out-strip ping the wind. In Britain, the breed of horses is as mixed and various as its inhab itants. The frequent introduction of foreign horses has given us a variety that no other country can boast of; and the English horse is esteemed above all others. The wild horse is active, and of a beautiful shape, but he is not so large as the tame horse. In his native state, he 18 so swift, that no other animal can contend with him in the chase. When the natives wish to take him, they make traps which are covered over in the ground, and catch him by the feet; the hunters then come and secure him. The wild horse is the only animal that can keep pace with the ostrich, which in its flight has both the assistance of legs and wings. The common cart horse, although slow in his movements, is useful to the farmer in tilling the ground; and a horse that is so useful to his master, and is of so much benefit to mankind, deserves a place next to man; and next to him, the welfare of the horse should engage our attention. The horse principally subsists on vegetables, and will live to the age of twenty or thirty years.blood. The largest tigers are found in Africa, and sometimes measure nearly five feet in height, and ten in length. The tiger is re markable for his great strength; he will easily carry off a horse or buffalo by throwing the carcass over his shoulder, and will thus bound away to his lair. The character so impressed Mr. Ketcham that he decided to re-inhabit the earth with the name at least, and so one day, with much pomp, and before an even half dozen horsemen friends, he drove the party out to the farm, where the now world's famous trotter, then a two-year-old, was exhibited, and afterwards christened Cresceus, a bottle Of rare old wine being used in the ceremony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prjevalsky's Horse: Equus Prejewalskii Pol IN prehistoric times Wild horses seem to have been as abundant in the south of Europe as are zebras to-day in East Africa. This being the case it is not surprising that all through the historic period it has been assumed by travellers, if not by naturalists, that wild horses still survived. It must be confessed that during the greater part of the nineteenth century believers in the existence of true wild horses could only point to the tarpan of the Russian steppes - a form now known to be a blend of several varieties. But some thirty years ago, when few ever expected to see a genuine true wild horse - a horse with an unbroken line of wild ancestors - it was reported that the Russian traveller Prjeval sky had discovered a new and quite distinct type of horse in the Great Gobi Desert to the west of Mongolia.
