Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years Musical Recollections, Vol. 2 It would serve no good turn further to enter into the private history Of this musical event, with all its loops and turns - to recall the green-room tales and their contradictions, which agitated those who are concerned in such matters. - It is enough to have lived for a while in the caldron Of Scandal, without stirring its waters afresh. - The new theatre did not tumble down like a house of cards. The Officers of Justice did not enter with writs, at the eleventh hour, to lay the strong hand of prohibition on any acting or singing being attempted in an establish ment already known, said its solvent well-wishers, to be insolvent. The Lord Chamberlain did not refuse his license, as it was promised for him that he should do. The singers were forthcoming on the day of rehearsal, which took place in the midst of scafl'oldings, artificers, and every other apparent interruption and Sign Of incompleteness. At last, on the 6th of April, the Royal Italian Opera opened its doors with a fine performance of Semiramide, in which, besides the excitement of the first night of a new undertaking, there was an attraction of late increasingly rare - the appearance of a new singer of the highest class, Mademoiselle Alboni. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giovanni Battista Rubini (1794-1854) was a legendary tenor and the first 19th-century non-castrati male singer to become an international star of opera. The previous two centuries had been the era of the castrati, with tenors and basses relegated to character and supporting roles in the operas of their time. Rubini stood apart because he not only matched the castrati in coloratura and pathos, but he also had an extraordinarily high voice. With Rubini’s rise, and in his wake, several tenors came to sing roles written specifically for them by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and many other lesser-known bel canto composers. Signaling the end of the dominance of castrati on stage, this period would last some 40 years until the advent of Grand Opera, Wagner, and Verdi and the appearance of the first so-called High C from the chest by Gilbert-Louis Duprez in 1837. Since then, the accepted tenor sound has followed the tradition epitomized by Enrico Caruso and, in our own era, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Many composers, conductor, and performers would come to regard bel canto dramatic operas as decorative and vapid until Maria Callas and Tulio Serafin demonstrated the heights this genre of opera could reach. However, opera directors and opera performers of late who have expressed an interest in reviving selected masterpieces from the bel canto tradition have found themselves confronted with the problem of locating tenors versed in the vocal techniques necessary to carry the high tessituras. In Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors: History and Technique, Dan H. Marek explores the extraordinary life of Rubini in order to frame this special period in the history of opera and connect the technique of the castrati who were among Rubini’s instructors. Drawing on the work of Berton Coffin, Marek offers long-sought answers to the challenges presented by high tessitura of bel canto operas for tenors. To further assist working singers, Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors includes over 60 pages of exercises written by Rubini himself before 1840, which Marek, for the first time ever has adapted to acoustical phonetics. Professional singers, teachers and their students, vocal coaches, and opera conductors will find this work indispensable as the only English-language work on high tessitura for tenor and soprano singing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Musical Recollections Some years ago, at a banquet of musicians, at which the wine was excellent and the music (with the exception of that which I contributed myself) execrable, I was called upon to make a speech. Having on several previous occasions intensified the melancholy of an after-dinner company in this fashion, I could not very well plead that I was 'unaccustomed to public speak ing, ' but I sought to be excused on the ground that, as I had enhanced the enjoyment of the assembly by playing one of my own composi tions on the piano, it would be a pity to spoil the good impression thus created by taking also a share in the post-prandial oratory. But the chairman would listen to no such beautiful reason ing, and the next minute found me on my legs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by scholars of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French music has been assembled in homage to the influential and inspirational French musicologist François Lesure who died in 2001. Lesure's immense erudition was legendary and spanned music from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. Two French composers who were particular foci in his scholarship were Berlioz and Debussy and this collection is based on scholarship around these two composers and the sources, contexts and legacies relating to their work.
