Excerpt: ...Adam's wife had been perfectly blind since the birth of her son, who was then twenty-two years old: it was really pleasing to see the kind attention paid to her, not only by her husband, but by all the little community, who, sensible of her privations, endeavoured by the tenderest care to make her forget some of them. Whatever occurs, nothing can prevent general and public worship; the day begins and ends with prayer. At 4, in the morning, every soul on the island repairs to the church-house, as it is called, where two hymns, either of Wesleys or Watts' selections are sung or rather said in a soft plaintive tone, well suited to the scene; after which a prayer is said, sometimes from a book, sometimes otherwise, but in all cases every one responds a hearty Amen. When prayer is ended, all are at liberty to return to their houses or go to work in their grounds as occasion may offer. Ten o'clock is the hour all over the island for the first or morning meal, as it is called; at this time all repair to their houses to breakfast, which usually consists of yams, cooked in so many different ways, that a stranger would be puzzled to find out the yam at all. Fish is also used for breakfast: I have seen pork on the breakfast table, but it is not common. Before any one attempts to touch the food, the oldest person at the table implores a blessing on it. It was delightful to see the venerable Adams take his hat off to pray; it brought to my mind those beautiful lines in Burns' Cotter's, Saturday night: --"His bonnet reverently laid aside, "The saint, the husband, and the father pray'd "To heaven's eternal king." The narratives begin in the seventeenth century and weave their way through various events connected to the ambitions, hopes, and machinations of individuals, communities, and nations. At the center of these narratives are the Bonin Islanders, originally an eclectic mix of Pacific Islanders, Americans, British, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and African settlers that first landed on the islands in 1830. The islands were British sovereign territory from 1827 to 1876, when the Japanese asserted possession of the islands based on a seventeenth century expedition and a myth of a samurai discoverer. As part of gaining sovereign control, the Japanese government made all island inhabitants register as Japanese subjects of the national family register. The islanders were not literate in Japanese and had little experience of Japanese culture and limited knowledge of Japanese society, but by 1881 all were forced or coerced into becoming Japanese subjects. By the 1930s the islands were embroiled in the Pacific War. All inhabitants were evacuated to the Japanese mainland until 1946 when only the descendants of the original settlers were allowed to return. In the postwar period the islands fell under U.S. Navy administration until they were reverted to full Japanese sovereignty in 1968. Many descendants of these original settlers still live on the islands with family names such as Washington, Gonzales, Gilley, Savory, and Webb. This book explores the social and cultural history of these islands and its inhabitants and provides a critical approach to understanding the many complex narratives that make up the Bonin story.

The Evangelical Admiral Gambier, notorious for distributing tracts to his fleet in a theatre of war, is commonly seen as a misfit in a fighting service that had scant time for fervent piety. In fact, the navy of the Revolutionaryand Napoleonic Wars showed a level of religious observance not seen since the days of Queen Anne.
