Book excerpt: Ethiopians have not completely put that historical famine – of ‘Live Aid’ times – behind them and they struggle to understand or to keep up with the Western world, including their ever-advancing technology. Education there is seen as a key to success but balancing developments alongside embedded tribal and superstitious beliefs is not easy. At least now schools have moved from drawing in the dust under a shady tree, into purpose-built structures – with or without resources. It was into this environment Valerie was placed when, following the dramatic changes in her circumstances, she made her momentous decision to put her comfortable English life on hold and to replace it with a year in that developing country. At 58, not only did she use her life skills and teaching experience in the northern town of Mekelle, but she lived through a potentially dangerous political time. Valerie used in-country transport to visit some amazing places which included her medal-winning run in Addis Ababa! Partly to record every little detail but also to maintain some sort of sanity, she kept a detailed diary throughout that roller coaster year. This book gives the reader a combination of an entertaining personal read of diaried key events, alongside her own Ethiopian life with its water conservation, frugal diet, wind, dust and much more. Valerie records an honest and sometimes harrowing insight into the little-known everyday existence of Ethiopians.

Ethiopia's position near the Earth's Equator exposes it to more sunlight than many countries, a feature that helped turn Ethiopia into an international travel destination. Ethiopian scholar Dr. Worku Mulat wrote this insightful look into the unique calendar system of Ethiopia and how an innovative leader used it to boost worldwide interest in the ancient country's abundant natural and cultural assets. Gorgeous portraits of the towns and countryside of this beautiful African nation by brilliant Ethiopian artist Daniel Getahun help illustrate why Ethiopia is home to 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and remains a top travel destination. Dual translations in English and Ethiopian languages including Amharic, Tigrinya and Afaan Oromo support literacy in diverse and underserved populations. Ready Set Go Books, an Open Hearts Big Dreams Project, is focused on increasing the literacy rate in Ethiopia through giving readers books with stories in their heart languages, full of colorful illustrations with Ethiopian settings and details. Profits from book sales are used to create, print, and distribute more Ready Set Go Books to kids in Ethiopia, Africa's second most populous country. Ethiopia's population is 44% children, ages 0-14 (43 million out of 97 million total). Only 5.5% of children attend pre-school or kindergarten, and the adult literacy rate is 49%. Our books are based on wise Ethiopian sayings that often rhyme in Amharic. If an adult says the first half, many children can chant the second half. Sometimes the meaning of these sayings is clear. Sometimes it has to be puzzled out and argued over. But sayings and idioms and proverbs help people express truths and beliefs in unusual ways. Since late 2017, OHBD has published over 100 unique #ReadySetGo dual language titles in four Ethiopian languages plus English and has plans to publish another 100 titles and add more languages in the coming years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pat was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Peace Corps was formed by President John F. Kennedy during her first three years of teaching in Milwaukee. She eagerly accepted the call to go to Ethiopia. There she met Emperor Haile Selassie, at Jubilee Palace in Addis Abeba, visited with Sargent Shriver, and hosted Norman Rockwell, whose painting of Peace Corps Ethiopia became the centerfold for the Saturday Evening Post and replicated on a US stamp. Hysterical attempts at bargaining in market places, arguing over the price of a camel, participating in Muslim and Coptic church traditions and holidays, building a school at a Leprosarium, battling fleas and flies, finding a hyena in the kitchen, and coming to know many beautiful Ethiopians made two years pass quickly. Girls struggled to attend the secondary school and faced a myriad of hurdles from dealing with menstruation to arranged marriages. The tragic story of Lakech Ali, a brilliant young girl, weaves itself throughout the book. Her death and the assassination of JFK were mourned in our village. All of this is set in the majestic mountains that border the Great Rift Valley of East Africa.

Book excerpt: A young woman sits by her father’s deathbed, lamenting her failure to keep a promise to him… A struggling writer walks every inch of the city in search of inspiration, only to find it is much closer than she imagined… A girl collapses from hunger at the side of the road and is rescued by the most unlikely of saviours... In this powerful, debut collection, Rania Mamoun expertly blends the real and imagined to create a rich, complex and moving portrait of contemporary Sudan. From painful encounters with loved ones to unexpected new friendships, Mamoun illuminates the breadth of human experience and explores, with humour and compassion, the alienation, isolation and estrangement that is urban life. Translated from the Arabic by Elisabeth Jaquette. It is a phenomental, exacting collection. It's intense and intimate, and always bordering, with absolute control, on the subversive and erotic. It's also very funny - Rania Mamoun is an extraordinary talent.'- Preti Taneja, author of We That Are Young ‘A stunning collection, remarkable for its sweet clarity of voice and startling depictions of the marginalised and the destitute. With mastery, Rania Mamoun reaches straight into the heartbeat of her subject matter, laying bare humanity in all its tenderness and tenacity.’ – ‘A stunning collection, remarkable for its sweet clarity of voice and startling depictions of the marginalised and the destitute. Book excerpt: The book is about the Alpha and Omega God. It is my testimony in regard to the existence and the will of the Deity creator for the entire creation activities. I started to write about this supernatural and omnipotent God from the beginning, which is unknown time. I then proceeded in writing all the way to the time of eternity. In the book, I have talked and tried to prove the creatorship and rulership situation or condition of the Trinity God. I have done this to make peoples of this world believe in existence of the almighty and the ubiquitous God who caused every thing seen and unseen to emerge and exist as they are found now.
