Book Synopsis The Struggle for the Third World by : Jerry Hough
Download or read book The Struggle for the Third World written by Jerry Hough and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last quarter century the Soviet Union and the United States have repeatedly come into conflict in various parts of the third world. During this period the most backward third world countries have sometimes proved susceptible to radical revolution, but the countries well on the way to industrialization have moved away from left-wing economic and political policies. In the longer perspective the West has been winning the struggle for the third world. The changes in those countries have been the subject of intense published debate in the Soviet Union—debate on Marxist concepts of the stages of history, on theories of economic development and revolutionary strategy, and on foreign policy. Jerry F. Hough explores the breakup of the orthodox Stalinist position on these issues and the evolution of free-swinging discussion about them. He suggests that, paradoxically, many of the old Stalinist ideas retain their strongest hold in the United States, which has not fully recognized its victory in the third world and the importance of the West's great economic power. The United States too often assumes that radical regimes will inevitably follow the Soviet path of development and that the nature of a regime determines the nature of its foreign policy. Because of these misperceptions, Hough argues the United States misses many opportunities in the third world. It emphasizes military power, even to the extent of undermining its crucial economic power, and it fails to offer the face-saving gestures that would permit Soviet retreats. Hough presents a prescription for an American policy better suited to the new realities in the third world and to the changing Soviet attitude toward them.

Book Synopsis Third World Education by : Anthony R. Welch
Download or read book Third World Education written by Anthony R. Welch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-05-03 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book debunks the argument that quality in education can only be achieved by limiting, or trading off, equality. The quality of schooling is a major issue for Third World nations across the globe. However there is no single measure which is universally accepted. Whether it is, as some economists might argue, an issue of the number of desks per classroom or one of national sovereignty is widely disputed. Defining equality in education becomes increasingly difficult in an era of globalization in which there exists a wide gap between rich and poor, both within and between nations. In the context of an international move towards New Right politics and neo-liberal economic ideologies, both the quality and equality of education are imperiled. This book argues that any worthy definition of quality education must include the interests and participation of the underprivileged.

Book Synopsis Hegel and the Third World by : Teshale Tibebu
Download or read book Hegel and the Third World written by Teshale Tibebu and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hegel, more than any other modern Western philosopher, produced the most systematic case for the superiority of Western white Protestant bourgeois modernity. He established a racially structured ladder of gradation of the peoples of the world, putting Germanic people at the top of the racial pyramid, people of Asia in the middle, and Africans and Indigenous people of the Americas and Pacific Islands at the bottom. In Hegel and the Third World Tibebu guides the reader through Hegel’s presentation on universalism to argue that such a classification flows in part from Hegel's philosophy of the development of human consciousness. Hegel classified Africans as people arrested at the lowest and most immediate stage of consciousness, that of the senses; Asians as people with divided consciousness, that of the understanding; and Europeans as people of reason. Tibebu demonstrates that Hegel’s views were not his alone but reflected the fundamental beliefs of other major figures of Western thought at the time. With detailed analysis and thorough research Hegel and the Third World challenges the central idea of Hegel's philosophy of history: progress. In addition, Tibebu succeeds in providing a fascinating critique of the Western philosopher’s rationalization of the gradual decline suffered by the people of the Third World in the context of modern world history.
Book Synopsis Changing Security Agendas and the Third World by : Lloyd Pettiford
Download or read book Changing Security Agendas and the Third World written by Lloyd Pettiford and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-08-27 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security has long been a central organizing concept of International Relations. Until the 1980s students of the discipline understood its simple essence in terms of the arms race and balances of power. Then, reflecting changes encouraged by both the inter-paradigm debate and the so-called third debate, security underwent radical reconsideration. The many attempts to redefine the concept led to a proliferation of terms such as true security, global security, common security and environmental security. However, these terms have often been used in confusing and contradictory ways. In attempting to help students deal with this confusion, this book outlines the theoretical tools at the disposal of students for their own rethinking of the concept of security. The book will help students wishing to seriously engage with IR's security debate at whatever level, and draws its own conclusions as part of this debate.

Starting with the changing dimensions of national security, it addresses the issues such as non-traditional threats to security, the threat posed by non state actors, the causes of insecurity and also the imperatives of tackling the human security challenges. The need for a comprehensive change in India's security policy is well exposed and certain policy prescriptions are also given. The oceans are generally meant for better inaction among nations, especially in the era of accelerated pace of globalization. With regard to the coastal security of India the role of coastal community is significant. The needs for inculcating awareness among the coastal community on coastal security matters as well as infrastructure development along the coastal area are also emphasized. It is very important to look into the basic problems of coastal people as they face many human security challenges. When we look into the coastal security a convergence of the national security concerns and human security concerns is visible. The overall development of the coastal area would lead to better human security and better human security would result in enlisting the support of the coastal community to ensure national security programme, especially the coastal security. In short, coastal security is not only about protecting the coastal terrain and territorial waters from direct attacks by the state actors or non state actors, but also safeguarding the interests of all stake holders.
