Book excerpt: Wireless communication and sensor networks would form the backbone to create pervasive and ubiquitous environments that would have profound influence on the society and thus are important to the society. The wireless communication technologies and wireless sensor networks would encompass a wide range of domains such as HW devices such as motes, sensors and associated instrumentation, actuators, transmitters, receivers, antennas, etc., sensor network aspects such as topologies, routing algorithms, integration of heterogeneous network elements and topologies, designing RF devices and systems for energy efficiency and reliability etc. These sensor networks would provide opportunity to continuously and in a distributed manner monitor the environment and generate the necessary warnings and actions. However most of the developments have been demonstrated only in controlled and laboratory environments. So we are yet to see those powerful, ubiquitous applications for the benefit of the society. The conference and consequentially the proceedings would provide opportunity to the researchers to interact with other researchers and share their researches covering all the above areas. The proceedings of the conference thus covers the research work of different authors in the area of wireless sensor networks, wireless communications, devices, tools and techniques for WSN, and applications of wireless sensor networks. This book is beneficial for those researchers who are working in the area of wireless sensor networks, wireless communication, and developing applications of Wireless sensor networks.

Book excerpt: The importance and ubiquity of wireless networks in the modern age justifies the depth and scope of the chapters included in this book, with its special focus on sensors. Topics covered include MAC protocols, with one contribution offering a literature review on them. Energy efficiency is also important, with several chapters addressing cooperative beamforming, modern spatial-diversity techniques and MEMS. Hardware issues are addressed by a batch of chapters, on extending network coverage areas, CMOS RF transceivers, the use of an accelerometer sensor module and a fall-detection monitoring system and a couple of contributions on hierarchical paradigms in wireless sensor networks. More mathematical approaches are also included, with chapters on data aggregation tree construction and distributed localization algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of tiny sensors capable of sensing, computing, and communicating. Due to advances in semiconductors, networking, and material science technologies, it is now possible to deploy large-scale WSNs. The advancement in these technologies has not only decreased the deployment and maintenance costs of networks but has also increased the life of networks and made them more rugged. As WSNs become more reliable with lower maintenance costs, they are being deployed and used across various sectors for multiple applications. This book discusses the applications, challenges, and design and deployment techniques of WSNs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th Tyrrhenian Workshop on digital communications is devoted to wi- less communications. In the last decade, wireless communications research boosted launching new standards and proposing new techniques for the - cess technology. We moved from the UTRA standard capable to transmit 0. 5bit/s/Hz to WLAN which is promising 2. 7bit/s/Hz. Now wireless c- munication systems are facing a ?ourishing of new proposal moving from multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver side (MIMO systems), to new powerfulForwardErrorCorrectionCodes,toadaptiveradioresourcemana- mentalgorithms. Thenewchallenge, however, isthemovetowardsmultimedia communications and IP technology. This move implies e?orts in several new aspects. First of all an open network, as IP is, imposes the necessity of a - cure network, to guarantee the privacy of the ongoing communications, avoid the use of the networks by unauthorized customers, avoid the misuses and the charge to third parties of the cost of the connection. Also, quality of service (QoS) of the communications is becoming a must in IP networks which are carrying services which need a guaranteed QoS as telephony, real time s- vices, etc. To get this new target some form of access control to the network must be setup. Recently, new form of communication networks has appeared to collect data for several applications (sensor networks, ad hoc networks, etc. ) and they need a connection with a backbone network which could be a wireless one with a larger range than the sensor or ad hoc networks.

Book excerpt: Advanced Computing, Networking and Informatics are three distinct and mutually exclusive disciplines of knowledge with no apparent sharing/overlap among them. However, their convergence is observed in many real world applications, including cyber-security, internet banking, healthcare, sensor networks, cognitive radio, pervasive computing amidst many others. This two volume proceedings explore the combined use of Advanced Computing and Informatics in the next generation wireless networks and security, signal and image processing, ontology and human-computer interfaces (HCI). The two volumes together include 132 scholarly articles, which have been accepted for presentation from over 550 submissions in the Third International Conference on Advanced Computing, Networking and Informatics, 2015, held in Bhubaneswar, India during June 23–25, 2015.
