Book excerpt: This book is based on the papers presented at the "Fourth International Congress on Oxygen Radicals (4-ICOR)," held June 27 - July 3, 1987, at the University of California, La Jolla. The chapters deal with the phenomena associated with highly reactive oxygen species (hydroxy, peroxy, alkoxy, aroxy, and superoxide radicals, as well as singlet oxygen) and their peroxidation products (hydrogen peroxide, hydroperoxides, peroxides, and epoxides) as they relate to the fields of chemistry, food technology, nutrition, biology, pharmacology, and medicine. The kinetics, energetics, and mechanistic aspects of the reactions of these species and the interrelationship of oxygen radicals (or any other free radicals) and peroxidized products have been emphasized. Special attention is focused on the mechanisms of the generation of free radicals and peroxy products in biosystems and on the adverse effects of these radicals and products in humans. The topics span the continuum from the simple chemistry of model systems to the complex considerations of clinical medicine. The book also explores the mechanisms of agents that protect against free radicals and peroxy products in vitro and in vivo. These agents include antioxidants used in materials, food antioxidants, physiological antioxidants, and antioxienzymes (SOD, glutathione peroxidase, and catalases). The use of these inhibitors to prevent damage to organs being prepared for transplantation, thereby maintaining the quality of transplanted organs and/or extending their "shelf-life," also is examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Radiation Biology, Volume 12, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in the field of radiation biology. Environmental matters are continuing to produce surprises and remain sources of concern. The safe disposal of radioactive waste still is a major problem facing the nuclear power industry. A possible solution is discussed here. New information about the survivors from radiation exposure at Hiroshima and Nagasaki has emphasized the consequences of brain damage in the developing embryo, the importance of late radiation carcinogenesis, and the roles played by age and sex in human radiation responses. It also is prompting an increasing number of scientists involved in radiation protection to question the use of small animal models to quantify late radiation effects in humans. Contributions to this volume deal with experimental and other aspects of those problems. Finally, increasing confirmation of the dose rate response for densely ionizing radiations has highlighted the hazard they pose to humans in the terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments. Therefore, the intention of agencies in the United States and elsewhere to generate better funded and more scientifically perspicacious programs of space radiation biology is welcome. Possible interests of the military in that regard are also considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is a comprehensive source of information on the toxic effects of environmental, industrial, and pharmacological agents on the human immune system. Focusing entirely on human immunotoxicology, without relying on animal models, the book explains the basic principles of immunotoxicology defines the mechanisms by which immunotoxins act, describes the clinical expression of immunotoxic disorders in the lung, skin, and other target organs, offers practical guidelines for early detection and control of host defense dysfunctions, and explores strategies for assessing the short- and long-term health effects of new and old chemicals and biologicals. The book includes extensive discussions on the role of low-dose, chronic immunosuppression in cancer, as well as on specific environmental and occupational immunotoxins and immunotoxic drugs used in hematology, anesthesiology, oncology and transplantation surgery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidases and Related Redox Systems is a collection of papers from the Third International Symposium on Oxidases and Related Reduction Systems held in Albany, New York on July 3-7, 1979. This book deals with the oxygen and peroxide activating enzymes field. The book addresses electron transfer related to oxygen biochemistry by comparing quantum, semiclassical, and classical methods of electron transfer reactions. Several papers then discuss the active and toxic states of oxygen and superoxide as the discovery of superoxide dismutase activity of erythrocuprein can provide a means to studying oxygen reaction in biological systems. One paper then compares the active sites of molluskan and arthropodan hemocyanins, which are known as reversible oxygen-carriers. The result of this study is presented in a table. Other papers discuss the flavin catalyzed reactions of molecular oxygen and the implications of the physiological function of D-amino acid oxidase from inhibition studies. The book then explains the role of carbon monoxide in the reaction mechanism of oxygen with cytochrome oxidase. This collection will prove beneficial for research students and professors in the field of biochemistry and chemical physics.

This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on the proceedings of an Advanced Study Institute (ASI) sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) held October 1984 in Corfu, Greece. The meeting received finan cial support from the United States Department of Energy and the United States National Cancer Institute. A plethora of recent developments in the molecular biology of DNA are leading to new ideas concerning how DNA alterations might be involved in the mechanism of radiation carcinogenesis. Evidence is accumulating that genetic sequences, known as oncogenes, are involved in the translation of DNA molecular alterations into phenotypic changes associated with malignant cells. For example, a chromosome break often occurs at or near the loca tion of a specific oncogene in Burkitt's lymphoma. Such breaks could represent initial lesions in a translocation process that activates the oncogene by inserting it at a new location, eg., near an active pro moter. Since breakage of the DNA is one of the principal ways that ion izing radiation affects mammalian cells, these new molecular ideas sug gest ways that radiation-induced DNA breaks might be involved as initial events in carcinogenesis. While the possible involvement of oncogenes in radiation carcino genesis is an exciting new development, a direct sequential connection between early molecular changes in DNA and later tumor development has yet to be established. Accordingly, there is a tremendous need for experimental studies of how DNA alterations might convert normal cells to cancer cells.
