Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Gallery of Portraits and Paintings, Vol. 3 This picture is attributed to Julio Romano; but there is no positive evidence of its being by the hand of that master. It formed, no doubt, a part of the pannels of some great work, or filled a vacuum in some extensive gallery. Although it is impossible, at this distance of time, to ascertain its real author, it bears evident marks of the Roman school. If it be, in fact, the production of Julio Romano, it is imagined that it was produced at the time when that celebrated artist imitated the style of Raphael. The figure is remarkable for the grace of its attitude and the chastity of its design; and the drapery is arranged in the most tasteful manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Gallery of Portraits and Paintings, Vol. 4 The two first heads have been wrought from a single block of marble. That which interests the reader to the left is the portrait of Epicurus, chief of a sect of philoso phers, no less famous among the ancients than the moderns. They pretended that happiness consisted in voluptuousness but this pleasure, in their opinion, was no other thing than virtue. We are not to reproach them for the eccentricities of some of their sectarista. Epicurus was laborious and frugal. He was born in a village of Attica, in the year 342 B. C. And died at the age of seventy-two, completely worn out by fatigue. He composed a variety of philosophical treatises, the most part of which are lost. It is from his works that Ln cretins collected opinions which he decorated with all the charms of poetry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gallery of Portraits, Vol. 3: With Memoirs The later years of his life were harassed by pecuniary embarrass ment, arising partly from the loss of his large professional income, inadequately replaced by a retiring pension of 4000; and partly from an unfortunate investment of the fruits of his industry in land, which yielded little return when the period of agricultural depression arrived. His first wife died in 1805 and an ill-assorted second marriage, con tracted much later in life, is supposed to have increased his domestic disquietudes, as it certainly injured his reputation, and gave pain to his friends. He was seized with an inflammation of the chest while travelling towards Scotland, and died at Almondale, his brother's seat, near Edinburgh, November 17, 1823. Immediately after his decease, the members of that profession of which he had been at once the ornament and the favourite, caused a statue of him to be executed. When the marble was denied admittance within those walls which had so often been shaken by the thunder of his eloquence, they placed it in the hall of Lincoln's Inn, where he had presided as chancellor; a lasting monument to those Who study the law, that subserviency is not necessary to advancement, and that they will be held in grateful remembrance by their professional brethren, who boldly uphold the liberties of their country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gallery of Portraits, Vol. 6: With Memoirs Very little is known Concerning the youth of Sii Walte1 Raleigh. He was a younge1 son, descended of an ancient family, and was b01n at a farm called Hayes, nea1 the mouth of the 1iver Otter, in Devon shire, in the year 1552. He went to Oriel College, Oxford, at an early age, and gained 'high praise for the quickness and, precocityof his talents. In-1569 he began his military career in the-civil wars of France, as a volunteer in the Protestant cause. It is conjectured that he remained in France for more than six years, and returned to Eng land in 1576. Soon after, he repaired to the Netherlands, and served as a volunteer against the Spaniards. In such schools, and under such leaders as Coligni and the Prince of orange, Raleigh's natural apti tude for political and military science 1eceived the best nurture-z but he was soon drawn f1om the war in Holland by a pursuit which had captivated his imagination from an early age - the prosecution of dis covary in the New World. In conjunction with his half-bi othe1 Sll Humphrey Gilbert, 3 man of courage and ability, and a skilful sailor, he made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a colony ln no1 th Ame rica. Returning home in 1579, he immediately entered the Queen's army in Ireland, and served with good esteem for personal courage and professional skill, until the suppression of the rebellion in that country. He owed his introduction to court, and the personal favour of Elizabeth, as is traditionally reported, to a fortunate and well-im proved accident, which is too familiar to need repetition here. It is probable, however, that his name and talents were not unknown, for we find him employed almost immediately in certain matters of diplomacy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans, Vol. 2 of 4: With Biographical Sketches Dr. Franklin was unquestionably a very remarkable man one who, in any age or country, would, by the mere force Of his native talents, have made a respectable figure in life. It is probable, however, that had his lot thrown him in an older or more refined community than America was in his youth, he would not have been contemplated as the sun of the system. He, like many other distinguished characters, was much indebted to circumstances. It must be admitted, too, that he had many conceits, or fancies; that he was by no means without his foibles; and that, in his own phrase, he committed some great errors in the early part Of his career. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gallery of Portraits, Vol. 5: With Memoirs Considerable obscurity hangs over this portion of Taylor's life: but it appears that in the years 1654-5 he was twice imprisoned, in con sequence of his advocacy of the fallen causes of Episcopacy and Royalty. At some time in 1654 he formed an acquaintance with Evelyn, which proved profitable and honourable to both parties; for the layman, as is evident from his Memoirs and Diary, highly valued and laid to heart the counsels of the man whom be selected as his ghostly father, and to whose poverty he liberally ministered in return out of his own abundance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gallery of American Portraits Several of the following sketches have already appeared in some of the occasional productions of the author, and received the approbation of the public. It has been suggested by his friends, that as some of these sketches merit preservation, and may possibly be useful to the future historian, and that as they are now interspersed in detached volumes, it would be proper to embody them in one small work, and thus united, give them to the public. In yielding to this suggestion, it may be necessary to remark, that a more intimate acquaintance with those whose characters he has endeavored to portray, has enabled him to make some changes, and add some new traits, which will render the sketches more complete. In all these, he has carefully endeavored to avoid the indulgence of any feeling which might warp his judgment or give too rich or too dark a coloring to the picture he presents. He flatters himself that they will be found as correct as such sketches can be made, without entering minutely into the various shades or slight peculiarities of character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gallery of Portraits, Vol. 7: With Memoirs During the fourteenth, and the beginning of the fifteenth century, Sweden, lying under vassalage to the crown of Denmark, suffered the evils which commonly belong to that condition. Gustavus Vasa, after a series of romantic adventures, established the independence of his country, and was deservedly elected by the Swedish Diet, in 1523, to wear its crown. The same kingdom to which he gave a place among free states, his grandson, Gustavus Adolphus, raised from the obscurity of a petty northern power, to rule in Germany, and to be the terror of the Church of Rome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Portrait Gallery, Vol. 1: With Biographical Sketches It is, however, from the combination of portrait and biography that we reap the utmost degree of utility and pleasure which can be derived from them.' As, in contemplating the portrait of an eminent person, we long to be instructed in his history, so, in considering his actions, we are anxious to behold his countenance. So earnest is this desire, that the imagination is generally ready to coin a set of features, or to conceive a character, to supply the absence of one or the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans Three years were passed in expe ditions of this nature, the young smn veyor making his home in his intervals of duty mostly at Mount Vernon. The health of his brother, the owner of this place, to whom he was much attached, was now failing with consumption, and George accompanied him in one of his tours for health in the autumn of 1751 to Barbadoes. As usual, he kept a journal of his observations - he was always diligent and exact in these records from a boy, so that of no one so illustrious in history have we a more perfect picture through life which tells us of the every-day living and hospitalities of the place, with a shrewd glance at its agricultural re sources and the conduct of its gover nor. A few lines cover nearly a month of the visit; they record an attack of the smallpox, of which his countenance always bore some faint traces. Leav ing his brother, partially recruited, to pursue his way to Bermuda, George re turned in February to Virginia. The health of Lawrence, however, continued to decline, and in the ensuing summer he died at Mount Vernon. The estate was left to a daughter, who, dying in infancy, the property passed, according to the terms of the will, into the pos session of George, who thus became the owner of his memorable home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gallery of Portraits, Vol. 2: With Memoirs Shortly after the accession of William and Mary, Somers was appointed solicitor-general, and received the honour of knighthood. Bishop Burnet says, that in the warm debates which took place in Parliament on the bill respecting the recognition of the King and Queen, and the validity of the new settlement of the government, it was strongly objected by the Tories that the convention, not being summoned by the King's writ, had no legal sanction; and that Somers distinguished himself by the spirited and able manner in which he answered the objection. He spoke, says Burnet, with such zeal and such an ascendant of authority that none were prepared to answer it; so that the bill passed without more opposition. This was a great service done in a very critical time, and contributed not a little to raise Somers's character.
