Book Synopsis Nuclear Threats and Security Challenges by : Samuel Apikyan
Download or read book Nuclear Threats and Security Challenges written by Samuel Apikyan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the dissolution of the Soviet Union the nuclear threats facing the world are constantly evolving and have grown more complex since the end of the Cold War. The diversion of complete weapon systems or nuclear material to rogue nations and terrorist organizations has increased. The events of the past years have proved the necessity to reevaluate these threats on a level never before considered. In recognition that no single country possesses all of the answers to the critical scientific, institutional and legal questions associated with combating nuclear and radiological terrorism, the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on “Preparedness for Nuclear and Radiological Threats” and this proceeding was structured to promote wide-ranging, multi-national exploration of critical technology needs and underlying scientific challenges to reducing the threat of nuclear/radiological terrorism; to illustrate through country-specific presentations how resulting technologies were used in national programs; and to outline the role of legal, policy and institutional frameworks in countering nuclear/ radiological terrorism. One key outcome of this book is better understanding of the interdependent contributions from across the international community of the scientific and technological components and the legal, policy and institutional components to combating nuclear and radiological threats.

Book Synopsis The Demography of Disasters by : Dávid Karácsonyi
Download or read book The Demography of Disasters written by Dávid Karácsonyi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides worldwide examples demonstrating the importance of the interplay between demography and disasters in regions and spatially. It marks an advance in practical and theoretical insights for understanding the role of demography in planning for and mitigating impacts from disasters in developed nations. Both slow onset (like the of loss polar ice from climate change) and sudden disasters (such as cyclones and man-made disasters) have the capacity to fundamentally change the profiles of populations at local and regional levels. Impacts vary according to the type, rapidity and magnitude of the disaster, but also according to the pre-existing population profile and its relationships to the economy and society. In all cases, the key to understanding impacts and avoiding them in the future is to understand the relationships between disasters and population change. In most chapters in this book we compare and contrast studies from at least two cases and summarize their practical and theoretical lessons.

This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall goal of this book is to promote research and development of imaging and radioanalytical techniques by publishing high-quality chapters in this rapidly growing interdisciplinary field. This book discusses the principles and applications of imaging and radioanalytical techniques across a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary science, technology and medicine, where these techniques are expected to make significant difference and contribution. It also explores the history of the field, current trends, and future directions. The book focuses mainly on cutting-edge applications, and associated equipments and methods, such as instrumentation systems and computing hardware/software. The primary target audience for this book includes students, researchers, clinicians, and professionals who are interested in medical and ground penetrating radar (GPR) imaging, and radioanalytical techniques.
Download or read book Hydrogeology written by Gholam A. Kazemi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of groundwater hydrology and the discipline of hydrogeology have attracted a lot of attention during the past few decades. This is mainly because of the increasing need for high quality water, especially groundwater. This book, written by 15 scientists from 6 countries, clearly demonstrates the extensive range of issues that are dealt with in the field of hydrogeology. Karst hydrogeology and deposition processes, hydrogeochemistry, soil hydraulic properties as a factor affecting groundwater recharge processes, relevant conceptual models, and geophysical exploration for groundwater are all discussed in this book, giving the reader a global perspective on what hydrogeologists and co-scientists are currently working on to better manage groundwater resources. Graduate students, as well as practitioners, will find this book a useful resource and valuable guide.
