Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although ceramics have been known to mankind literally for millennia, research has never ceased. Apart from the classic uses as a bulk material in pottery, construction, and decoration, the latter half of the twentieth century saw an explosive growth of application fields, such as electrical and thermal insulators, wear-resistant bearings, surface coatings, lightweight armour, or aerospace materials. In addition to plain, hard solids, modern ceramics come in many new guises such as fabrics, ultrathin films, microstructures and hybrid composites. Built on the solid foundations laid down by the 20-volume series Materials Science and Technology, Ceramics Science and Technology picks out this exciting material class and illuminates it from all sides. Materials scientists, engineers, chemists, biochemists, physicists and medical researchers alike will find this work a treasure trove for a wide range of ceramics knowledge from theory and fundamentals to practical approaches and problem solutions.

Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the 3rd European Symposium on Engineering Ceramics, held in London, 28-29 November 1989, under the auspices of IBC Technical Services Ltd. The Symposium sessions were chaired by Eric Briscoe, who also introduced the Symposium with the very appropriate review 'Ceramics in Europe'. The term 'engineering ceramics' is commonly taken to mean a group of special high-strength and heat-resistant ceramic materials developed almost exclusively for the advanced internal combustion engine of the next century. It is not always fully appreciated that high grade fine microstructure ceramics both of the oxide and of the non-oxide classes, whether they be termed engineering, fine, special, advanced, structural or technical, have been supporting a large number of diverse and profitable industries over many decades. Indeed, in some respects these materials can be regarded as natural developments from the long established refractories field, and the distinction between an engineering ceramic and a refractory can become blurred, as the contribution in this volume on 'Nitride Bonded Carbide Engineered Ceramics' shows. It is of significance that in Japan, for example, much development work in the engineering ceramics field was initiated by the refractories industries, seeking to diversify possibly but doing so on the basis oflong experience in the refractories area. The main objective of this Symposium was to help engineers and designers to assess the present state of the field of engineering ceramics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, titled Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ce ramic Microstructures: Control at the Atomic Level summarizes the progress that has been achieved during the past decade in understanding and controlling microstructures in ceram ics. A particular emphasis of the symposium, and therefore of this volume, is advances in the characterization, understanding, and control of micro structures at the atomic or near-atomic level. This symposium is the fourth in a series of meetings, held every ten years, devoted to ceramic microstructures. The inaugural meeting took place in 1966, and focussed on the analysis, significance, and production of microstructure; the symposium emphasized the need for, and importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of ceramics. A consensus emerged at that meeting on the critical importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of ceramic properties. That point of view became widely accepted in the ensuing decade. The second meeting took place in 1976 at a time of world-wide energy shortages and thus emphasized energy-related applications of ceramics, and more specifically, microstructure-property relationships of those materials. The third meeting, held in 1986, was devoted to the role that interfaces played both during processing, and in influencing the ultimate properties of single and polyphase ceramics, and ceramic-metal systems.

Book excerpt: Recent developments in advanced ceramics are critically evaluated in respect to their thermal shock and thermal fatigue behavior from an interdisciplinary viewpoint by leading experts. The book covers the aspects of material development, mechanical and fracture mechanical models and experimental testing methods. Special emphasis is given to the influence of a rising crack resistance on the thermal shock behavior, novel irradiation testing methods for a quantitative characterization of the thermal shock and fatigue loading as well as detailed fracture mechanical models for single and multiple crack propagation. This book summarizes developments of the last decade concerning the thermal shock and thermal fatigue behavior of advanced ceramics. The scientific articles of the book were carefully arranged in order to achieve a textbook-like form which will be of great value to researchers and students. Book excerpt: The purpose of Oxide-Based Fiber-Reinforced Ceramic-Matrix Composites is to provide comprehensive information on the most recent successful findings. The book consists of six chapters which characterize the current state of the art concerning oxide-based fiber-reinforced composites. Chapter one provides an introduction, examples of application areas and background information. Chapter two deals with the primary material properties for the areas of application and lists the possible constituent parts of the composites, depending on particular demands. Chapter three explains both the past and present fabrication methods which can affect the performance of the composites. Chapter four defines the interphase-related phenomena and describes the mechanical characteristics of the oxide-based fiber-reinforced composite, produced with different interphases. Chapter five deals with the fabrication route, functionality and mechanical characterization of the porous-matrix composites. The last chapter summarizes the present achievements and identifies requirements for reaching the goal, thereby providing a promising course for future research.
