Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thinning Sugar Beets The basic consideration in the distribution of sugar beets is the soil volume in Which the' plants absorb water and plant nutrients. It is obvious that the spacing in the row can be somewhat closer when the rows are 22 inches apart than when they are 18 inches apart. Moreover, a rich soil will support more beets per unit area than an impoverished soil. 'no iron-clad rule can be' laid down, specifying the distance beets should be thinned, which would cover all the various conditions under which sugar beets are grown. However, experience and experimentation have taught that, on the average and on most soil types, 216 square inches per beet gives maximum yields. This is equivalent to a 12-inch stand in the row with rows 18 inches apart, or to a -inch stand with rows 20 inches apart. Crowding beets reduces the amount of light coming to the individual plant, and also reduces the soil volume in which the plants feed. In unnecessarily wide spacing, the land is. Not. Working to its full capacity. It should be stated at this point that a wide stand reduces the-sugar per cent and a' close stand elevates. The sugar per cent. If the beet plant has ample room in which to grow and develop, it becomes large at the sacrifice of sugar per cent; if it is crowded by close spacing, its size is reduced but the sugar per cent is relatively high. The civilized nations have become so accustomed to its use as an important food that great inconvenience is experienced if it cannot be had or if the supply is reduced. This has made sugar-producing plants almost as staple as those from which bread is derived. As a result, sugar-beets, in the past century, have won an im portant place among the profitable mom of the temperate zone. In most of the European countries they have been raised extensively, whereas in America their growth has been confined to a comparatively few localities. In re cent years, however, the area has been greatly extended, and increased interest has been taken in establishing a domestic beet-sugar industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transplanting Sugar Beets in Utah and Idaho The plants are of thinning size when transplanted, whereas the seeded field is normally cultivated once or twice before the plants are of this size. This item would probably reduce the cost of cultivation from $1 to $2 an acre. The cost of irrigation for transplanted beets is the same as or slightly greater than that for, seeded fields. The irrigation that is applied at the time of setting the plants is an extra cost in some areas. In areas where irrigation is necessary to germinate the seed, this should not be counted as an additional cost. From the experience of these tests extending from 1925 to 1929, and especially in view of the 1929 experience, it is believed that in creased yields can be obtained by transplanting sugar beets of proper size. With the savings enumerated it is evident that an increase in yield of at least 2 tons per acre, over what would be obtained from standard practice would be required to meet the additional costs involved. The indications are that gains far in excess of this may be made. The United States Department of Agriculture is not advocating the supplanting of present practices in beet growing by the use of transplants, but it is calling attention to the possibilities of the method and suggesting the desirability of further tests. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Planting Season for Sugar Beets in Central California In states where the winter months are cold, beets are not planted until about April, when the weather becomes warmer and the danger of heavy frosts has passed. In such localities the growing season is comparatively short, and in some years the beets do not mature properly. The thinning and harvesting operations. Are, furthermore, crowded into a brief space of time. California, with its equable temperature, has the advantage that the see-ding can be done during the greater part of the year. This fact give-s the grower an opportunity to extend the growing period and, by selecting the proper time of seeding, to give the plant opti mum conditions of growth. By extending the planting time, more over, the California grower can distribute the thinning and harvesting operations more favorably than the: growers in other states, who have only a short period of favorable planting weather. Although the beet planting season is long in California, the seed ings made during different months do not produce equally good yields. Experimental data collected at Davis, California, a station representative of Sacramento Valley, and observations in commercial fields in the San Joaquin, Sacramento, Salinas, and San Juan valleys will serve as a basis for the following discussion of the best time to plant sugar beets in central California. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sugar Beet: Culture, Seed Development, Manufacture, and Statistics The mean summer temperature of these localities is about the same, but the continuation of a semisummer temperature through the winter in southern California greatly favors the growth and manufacture of the beets. In northern Nebraska and South Dakota the beets, which are to be manufactured during the winter time, have to be protected by expensive silos. In southern California and other places similarly situ ated the beets can be protected without any covering, or at most with only a slight covering of leaves or straw. The season for planting in a mild climate is also longer. For instance, in southern California plant-a ing can commence as early as January and continue till June, thus giv ing a beet crop coming continuously into maturity from the 1st of August to the lst of December. In other. Localities the planting must be accomplished in a short time, say from the l0th of May till the 1st of June. Before the first of these dates the ground will be too cold for planting and after the second the season will be. So late as to prevent the maturity of the beets before frost. When the field is properly plowed and subsoiled in the late autumn the farmer will be able to take advantage of the first favorable opportunity in the spring to pre pare the surface of the soil and plant the seed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sugar Beet Seed: A Work for Farmers, Seedsmen and Chemists, Containing Historical, Botanical and Theoretical Data; Combined With Practical Directions for the Production of Superior Sugar Beet Seed However, beets of those davs were so different from the kind now used for sugar-making that thev need no more than a passing notice. Knauer, with some authority, maintains that all existing varieties of sugar beets have five important starting points: Ist, Belgian; 2d, Quedlinburg; 3d, Silesian; 4th, Siberian, and sth, the Imperial beet. Hundreds of varieties differ, not onlv in shape. But in the size and form of their leaves, which, also, are so many characteristics, to which must be added sub-varieties with varied col ored skins, necks, etc. At the present time those who have centred their efforts on one variety, like M. Legras, have created a type that would be recognized anywhere; also the German, klein-\vanzleben, which has undergone certain changes, but still retains its original characteristics. The type was created by the old firm Rabbethge and Giesecke in 1859. Vilmo rin. The well-known French seed producer, created the White Silesian and the Ameliorated, as well as the green and rose neck varieties. The Desprez beets are known as white or rose, with hard skins, white or rose intermediate skins, and the green neck, soft skins, with several early maturing varieties; simon-legrand has the white rose, white conical neck, all of which are the so - called ameliorated types of the German seed grow ers. The most important, besides the ones mentioned in the foregoing. Are the Knauer. Old Imperial, Rose and White Ameliorated Imperial and Electoral. The Dippe Brothers have produced a type based upon the klein-wanzleben, Imperial Ameliorated, and the Most Rich. The Austrian beet of jules-robert is much liked: the varieties are few. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments With Sugar Beets in 1890 By the courtesy of the managers of the company the Department was permitted to station a chemist at Grand Island, who had charge of the sampling of the beets as they came to the factory in wagons or carloads. Nearly three thousand analyses of samples were made and the full tabulated reports of these analyses will be found following. The proprietors of the factory were so encouraged by the season's work that they have decided to erect another large factory at Norfolk, Nebraska, and at the Chino Ranch in southern California, and work on these factories is now going on. Manufacturing experiments, on a small scale, with sugar beets, were also carried on during the season just past at Medicine Lodge, Kansas. About 80 acres of beets in all were harvested for the factory, and a summary Of the work done will be given in another place.
