Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thinning Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest The true value of a shortened rotation has not been appreciated heretofore. The fact that total cubic - volume growth seldom increases during the first years following thinning has led to the erroneous conclusion that thinning doesn't pay. The potential long - term gain has been discounted or overlooked entirely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dwarfmistletoe of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest Since dwarfmistletoe is a natural component of the vegetation in the ponderosa pine type, it is sometimes regarded as a relatively harmless pest. The viewpoint is perhaps tenable as a broad ecological concept but can hardly be considered a paractical one where a particular infected stand must be preserved and.maintained indefinitely for aesthetic or economic purposes. Although dwarfmistletoe does not aten the existence of ponderosa pine as a species, in certain localities it has rendered stands unproductive, unsightly some cases has favored invasion by woodland - type or other species. The fact that some infected stands have given fair to'good yields might also cause one to assume that future yields of the same quantity and quality can be expected. If such were the case, the apparent loss in increment due to dwarfmistletoe might not warrant the cest of Special control.measures. On the other hand, if one considers the insidious aggressiveness of this parasite it is more likely that once it has built up a sizeable population its effect on yield will be pro gressively detrimental in the future and will lead eventually to complete loss. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Rot of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest Living branches are sometimes infected when the red rot fungus attacks dead secondaries, and the rot may eventually extend into the trunk through the branch heartwood, if present, or, in rare instances, through the living sapwood in truly parasitic action. Except in large and long-lived branches, however, these infections make little progress before the branches die and new infections occur closer to the trunk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management of Ponderosa Pine in Even-Aged Stands in the Southwest Although land managers must increasingly direct their practices toward multiple uses, these practices must be based on sound silvicultural principles of the forest type involved. Land managers must understand the tradeoffs between the timber resource and other physical, social, and economic considerations. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Large-Crowned Planted Ponderosa Pine Respond Well to Thinning Thinning study results provide a portion of the information on which timber stand improvement policy is formulated. To be useful these studies should sample a wide range of sites, tree sizes, age classes, and geo graphic locations in planted and natural stands. The study reported here is one of a number of thinning experiments established in various stands through out the Pacific Northwest during the period from 1957 to 1965. This report summarizes initial 11 - year results after thinning a 33 - year - old ponderosa pine plantation. 1. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest as Developed by Research and Experimental Practice Ponderosa pine, from the very beginning of the conservation movement, has figured as a leading timber species. In 1908 G. A. Pearson, a year out of forest school, was sent to Arizona to study natural regeneration of this tree, then called Western yellow pine. Commercial logging was in full swing on both private and public lands. In the national forests, despite measures that seemed adequate for natural reforestation, seedlings started sparingly after cutting. To provide information on natural regeneration as well as on other phases of ponderosa pine management, the Forest Service established the Fort Valley Forest Experiment Station in 1909. The research field covered Arizona and New Mexico, but work was concentrated largely in what is now the Fort Valley Experimental Forest, a branch of the Southwestern Forest and Range Experiment Station. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Ponderosa Pine Thinned to Different Stocking Levels in Northern Arizona This study demonstrates that the ability of Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine (pinus ponderosa var. Scopulorum Engelm.) to respond to stand treatment pro vides considerable flexibility for the manager to choose initial stand management strategies. Furthermore, it still permits future changes as management objectives or market conditions change. Early predictions (schubert 1971) and the 20-year results presented here differ considerably, indicating that volume production estimates covering long periods of time should be interpreted with care. Management guidelines involving intermediate entries, however, can be formulated with a greater degree of certainty. For example, the study results suggest that a reasonable cutting cycle would be about 20 years, provided that there is a roundwood market when the second thinning is made. For sawtimber yields, in contrast, the minimum elapsed time between the first and second thinning appears to be about 30 years, with longer cut ting cycles necessary if a minimum diameter limit of greater than 7 inches cm) is desired. Book Synopsis Crop-Tree Thinning of Ponderosa Pine in the Pacific Northwest (Classic Reprint) by : James W. Barrett

This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crop-Tree Thinning of Ponderosa Pine in the Pacific Northwest Mowat has reported on several earlier crop-tree thinning studies made in the Pacific Northwest. Thinning treatments varied from ramov ing only trees with interlacing crowns to cutting all trees whose crowns were within 3 feet of the crop tree. Differences between growth of released and unreleased trees were small. Heavily released trees grew at the rate of only about 1 inch per decade compared to inch for selected crop trees in the unthinned stand. Furthermore, these early experiments did not show any clear-cut effect of overstory on understory tree growth and vice versa. The studies reported here go a step further as some crop trees were released to a point that approached area thinning. In addition, the interrelationships of overstory and understory tree growth were examined. Results are important to land managers who have trees already released by the crop - tree method and to managers who intend to embark on an extensive thinning program in ponderosa pine. In the Southwest, ponderosa pine is of particular importance since this one species makes up 88 percent of the standing saw-timber volume in the two States of Arizona and New Mexico.
