The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University offers an Indonesia Theological Immersion course to students who are intersted in gaining a better understanding of Islam and Muslim lived experience in Indonesia. Through the course, the students develop a basic understanding of interreligious and intercultural dialogue. The immersion experience gives them an opportunity to practice dialogue. Through reading, research and many interactions, the students recognize and appreciate the complex interplay between faith and culture. The data from students reveals the importance of hospitality that builds up relationship into friendship. However, the immersion program does not provide long enough time for any relationship to develop into a friendship. The study finds that interacting with people of another religion leaves a better traction than just reading books or articles about the religion. Along the pilgrimage, the participants encounter God in many places through different ways. Returning home, the pilgrimage have grown in their faith and seen it in a new perspective with increasing appreciation of their tradition. Recognizing its limitations, the study offers ideas for future study to promote more interreligious initiatives. The study concludes with a note of hope for the shared-ongoing journey among all people of religions in general and among Muslims and Christians in particular.

This important book addresses the issue of dialogue from a different, even unique, perspective: as the relationships, in social and historical context, between faiths. David Lochhead first differentiates between several ideological stances (often categorized as simply "exclusivity" or "inclusivity") that have defined Christian attitudes toward other faiths. He considers the sociological as well as theological dimensions of these stances, concluding that a theology of interfaith dialogue "must ultimately be grounded in a theology of the world." Lochhead brings fresh insights to a reading of Barth on the theological significance of religion. He argues that, while generally considered otherwise, Barth's view is not inherently hostile to interfaith dialogue. Rather, Barth poses questions of the utmost importance to reconciling dialogue with Christian faithfulness. Based on this, Lochhead proposes a stance of "faithful agnosticism"--the refusal to make a priori valuations of other faiths--as the attitude most conducive to constructive interfaith relationships. Exploring the notion of dialogue as a means to truth Lochhead then discusses Plato and Buber from the dialogical perspective and addresses the question of whether a doctrine of revelation must be universalized in order to permit interfaith dialogue. If that is the case, the time has come for Christians not only to learn about but also from their religious neighbors. Circling the Elephant affirms that the best way to be truly open to the mystery of the infinite is to move away from defensive postures of religious isolationism and self-sufficiency and to move, in vulnerability and openness, toward the mystery of the neighbor. Employing the ancient Indian allegory of the elephant and blind(folded) men, John J. Thatamanil argues for the integration of three often-separated theological projects: theologies of religious diversity (the work of accounting for why there are so many different understandings of the elephant), comparative theology (the venture of walking over to a different side of the elephant), and constructive theology (the endeavor of re-describing the elephant in light of the other two tasks). Circling the Elephant also offers an analysis of why we have fallen short in the past. Interreligious learning has been obstructed by problematic ideas about “religion” and “religions,” Thatamanil argues, while also pointing out the troubling resonances between reified notions of “religion” and “race.” He contests these notions and offers a new theory of the religious that makes interreligious learning both possible and desirable. Christians have much to learn from their religious neighbors, even about such central features of Christian theology as Christ and the Trinity. This book envisions religious diversity as a promise, not a problem, and proposes a new theology of religious diversity that opens the door to robust interreligious learning and Christian transformation through encountering the other.
