Book excerpt: First published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.

Her voice haunts him from the grave, urging him to seek justice above the law. In August 1898, James Hogan celebrates his birthday by accompanying his uncle Septemus on a trip to the agricultural fair. But early on in the trip it becomes apparent to young James that his uncle has other plans in mind. This is no regular trip to the fair, but a journey of revenge against the three men who killed Clarice. James witnesses his uncle plunge deeper and deeper into despair and madness while encountering more than his share of gunslingers, executioners, and ladies of the night in this taut, powerful tale of grief and vengeance, and coming of age.

Book excerpt: Retired after thirty-plus years in law enforcement, Tony DiGiusto, newly licensed private investigator, was looking forward to a quiet and uneventful retirement investigating simple everyday civil cases for local attorneys from an office in the sleepy and affluent hamlet of Sausalito, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Little did Tony know that his first major clients-a pair of twins who had hired his uncle, a well-known San Francisco attorney, to investigate a property ownership dispute-would lead him to investigate the sudden and unexplained death of his uncle in a small Northern California town. Tony becomes entangled in a complex and horrendous investigation that will lead him from San Francisco to the charming and picturesque towns of the Sierra Gold Rush areas. The investigation into his uncle's death leads Tony and his live-in girlfriend, Gina Rosetti, into a nightmarish web of terror and murder involving long-forgotten Nazi activities in California and almost costs Tony and Gina their lives. California's colorful capital, Sacramento, and its legislative bodies play an unwitting part in this fast-paced and intriguing glimpse into a madman's plan for a new Third Reich.

Book excerpt: #1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A profoundly moving spiritual journey through our system of capital punishment and an unprecedented look at the human consequences of the death penalty • "Stunning moral clarity.” —The Washington Post Book World • Basis for the award-winning major motion picture starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn "Sister Prejean is an excellent writer, direct and honest and unsentimental. . . . She almost palpably extends a hand to her readers.” —The New York Times Book Review In 1982, Sister Helen Prejean became the spiritual advisor to Patrick Sonnier, the convicted killer of two teenagers who was sentenced to die in the electric chair of Louisiana’s Angola State Prison. In the months before Sonnier’s death, the Roman Catholic nun came to know a man who was as terrified as he had once been terrifying. She also came to know the families of the victims and the men whose job it was to execute—men who often harbored doubts about the rightness of what they were doing. Out of that dreadful intimacy comes a profoundly moving spiritual journey through our system of capital punishment. Here Sister Helen confronts both the plight of the condemned and the rage of the bereaved, the fears of a society shattered by violence and the Christian imperative of love. On its original publication in 1993, Dead Man Walking emerged as an unprecedented look at the human consequences of the death penalty. Now, some two decades later, this story—which has inspired a film, a stage play, an opera and a musical album—is more gut-wrenching than ever, stirring deep and life-changing reflection in all who encounter it.

Book excerpt: DEAD MAN’S KING: Fifty-nine homeless men are living in Central Park in a hidden city with its own boundaries, laws and governance. The Misfits of Misfit City live in comfortable, discreet “abodes” inconspicuously carved into the terrain. Misfit City (which occupies twenty of Central Park’s 840 acres) is morally-quarantined from the corrosive influences of Manhattan greed and plutocracy. That seems to change one day when a drifter wanders into Misfit City and dies of a heroin overdose. He is brought back to life by paramedics – a miracle that inspires Granger, the one Misfit who witnessed it, to go searching for life’s deeper meaning on, of all places, the streets of Manhattan’s Upper East Side. He writes philosophical panhandling signs -- and quickly learns that, the more arrogant and self-centered his signs are, the more money he earns. The Park Avenue crowd nurtures his thinking. As time goes on, Granger changes from a mild-mannered people-pleaser to a menace. He gets mouthy and defiant with his Mentor, Virgil and even picks a fight with a local politician Every day for months, he brings a little bit of what he’s learned on the streets of Manhattan back to Misfit City. After fifteen years of relative harmony in Misfit City, there’s a rash of infighting, quarreling and suspicious deaths. One shocking development leads to another, and eventually to Misfit City’s breaking point. ` Like Wolfe’s other work, The Dead Man’s King is hilarious one moment and heartbreaking the next. His adrenaline-fueled storyline and seamless writing make it unpredictable and nearly impossible to put down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was Friday the thirteenth, not destined to be a good day in the eyes of many overly superstitious fishermen on the dock. It was a gloomy day. The sky was scattered with dark clouds and a misty fog hung over the ocean. Doom and gloom again, said Captain John Carl Thomason unenthusiastically, as he watched his crew unload the catch onto the dock. The price is in the toilet again. What happened to the way things used to be around here? Probably gone along with his mind, muttered a short balding man who looked worthless in every respect. Shut your trap, Remi, snapped John Carl. Yes Cap, said Remi. He sounded like he had memorized the responses he gave to his captains commands. John Carl Thomason looked as though he would be very good looking if it were not for the fact that he always looked as though he was having the worst day of his life. Is that a banana youre eating, Remi? asked John Carl casually. Yes Cap, said Remi automatically. Well, guess what, mate? said John Carl, his voice colder now. What? asked Remi, not catching his captains cold tone. Bananas are bad luck, thats what, yelled John Carl. He grabbed the banana out of Remis hand and shoved it in his face. DO YOU- REALIZE -WHAT -TODAY IS? he yelled, pronouncing each word with deadly emphasis. No sir, spluttered Remi, who looked quite the idiot with banana all over his face. ITS FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH, YOU WORTHLESS IDIOT, roared John Carl. We have enough bad luck without you making things worse with your stinking slimy banana. The Captain threw the banana peel on the dock and stormed away, swearing loudly. Remi stumbled towards the truck, carrying a large box. He stepped on the banana peel and fell flat on his face. Hey, Remi, called a young man named Sono, how long does it take from when you step on the peel to when you hit the dock? One banano-second! There was a roar of laughter from the other crewmembers on the dock. Nice one, Sono, said another young man called Browen. Sono and Browen were brothers, ages nineteen and eighteen. They looked very much alike and had very similar personalities. They seemed to be able to read each others thoughts, and were, therefore, exceptional liars. They could always talk their way out of anything, even with their captain, who was not easily fooled. Remi was not a challenge for them. They had taken the job working on the boats because neither of them was very academically inclined. They were, however, very good at making jokes, pulling pranks, and having as much fun as possible while on the job. They stopped at nothing to insult anyone who displayed a lack of intelligence or physical prowess. Remi Nelson was a short, chubby, balding man, who had never really been able to make anything of his life, or at least it never seemed like he had. He was thirty-five, but looked forty-five, at best. Sono and Browen thought he was at least fifty. Everyone always made fun of Remi, but he still seemed to feel important and useful. This only seemed to make things worse for him, although he never seemed to understand that. Just imagine being stupid enough to eat a banana in front of Cap on Friday the thirteenth, said Sono loudly. Imagine being stupid enough to slip on the peel and fall flat on your face, said Browen. Imagine doing this job till youre fifty, said Sono. Im thirty-five, snapped Remi, who had stood up and was wiping banana off his face. Really? said Sono mockingly. I had no idea guys went bald and got beer bellies that soon. You might want to tell Cap to get a move on, he must be at least thirty or thirty-five. I dont see him looking like that. Looks arent everything, you know, muttered Remi. Clearly, or you wouldnt even be alive, sneered Sono. Get to work, snapped John Carl coming up behind them. Yes Cap, said Remi immediately Sorry sir, said Browen emphasizing the last

Book excerpt: An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet caf. A stranger at the next table who has had enough. And a dead man - with a lot of loose ends. So begins Dead Man's Cell Phone, a wildly imaginative new comedy by playwright Sarah Ruhl, recipient of a MacArthur ''Genius'' Grant and Pulitzer Prize finalist for her play The Clean House. A work about how we memorialize the dead - and how that remembering changes us - it is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world. Sarah Ruhl's plays have been produced at theaters around the country, including Lincoln Center Theater, the Goodman Theatre, Arena Stage, South Coast Repertory, Yale Repertory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, among others, and internationally. She is the recipient of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize (for The Clean House, 2004), the Helen Merrill Emerging Playwrights Award, and the Whiting Writers' Award.
