Book excerpt: Excerpt from Render Therefore Unto Caesar the Things Which Are Caesar's; And Unto God the Things That Are God's: The Sermon, Preached at the Consecration of the Right Reverend Alfred Harding, D.D., Bishop of Washington Caesar; on the other the Herodian, refusing to God the things that belonged to God. Neither would be satisfied with an answer which harmonized the duties which they had set in opposition. Their object was to have Christ fall a victim to their plot. One cared not for Caesar, while the other cared not for God. Neither did they love each other, nor have anything in common; the only thing they cared for, in their loveless coalition, was to defeat the Master. If Christ should condemn the payment of tribute to Caesar, then they could accuse Him of being a trai tor; but if, on the other hand, He sanctioned it as an obligation, they could denounce Him for treach ery to His race and to His religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julius Caesar's life and example have fascinated and motivated generations of people for nearly 2,000 years. This book explores the people, places, events, and institutions that helped define arguably the most famous individual in the history of Rome. Far from being "ancient history," Roman history and culture from the time of Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire have surprising parallels with the political strife and societal issues in 21st-century life. Interest and awareness have also been bolstered by recent successful Hollywood films as well as television series that depict Roman history. All Things Julius Caesar: An Encyclopedia of Caesar's World and Legacy provides a unique reference on topics and themes related to the life and times of Julius Caesar. It offers historically accurate information about what he did—and did not—do, and examines his impact on later eras via images and idealized depictions of him popularized in literature and other media up to the present. The approximately 200 entries in this two-volume set are organized alphabetically according to topic or theme—for example, individuals such as Marc Antony, places such as the province of Gaul, events such as Roman elections or battles in the Civil War, and institutions such as Roman classes, slavery, patrons, and clients. The entries cover all the territories of the Roman Empire during Caesar's time, from Britain to Egypt. The set includes primary documents such as excerpts from ancient letters, essays, and biographies and supplements the text with images and maps. The bibliography provides print and electronic resources suitable for high school and college student research as well as further reading for general audiences.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar and the Britons This small work, is not designed, to include every thing, that might be said on a subject; which, however antiquated, is still interesting; as it treats of the glory, or disgrace, of the ances tors of the most civilized nations of the present age. Its full completion, as it depends on the uncertain favor of the public, may never be ef fected. It would include a variety of collateral evidence; and, if the name of Caesar, be taken as symbolical of the Roman power; it would demand a minute scrutiny, of all the transactions of the Romans with Britain. This process would shew the preponderance of her councils, and arms, in all ages; and the utter impracticability of the success of a foreign power, against a nation, which, if true to itself, could always have defied the united efforts of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Julius Caesar: With Forty-Four Illustrations There were three great European nations in ancient days, each of which furnished history with a hero: the Greeks, the Carthaginians, and the Romans. Alexander was the hero of the Greeks. He was King of Macedon, a country lying north of Greece proper. He headed an army of his countrymen, and made an excursion for con quest and glory into Asia. He made himself master of all that quarter of the globe, and reigned over it in Babylon, till he brought himself to an early grave by the excesses into which his boundless prosperity allured him. His fame rests on his triumphant success in building up for himself so vast an empire, and the admiration which his career has always excited among mankind is heightened by the consideration of his youth, and of the noble and generous impulses which strongly Qmarked his character. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gate to Caesar The recent discovery of a work of Aristotle has interested and delighted the whole learned world; but one may venture to say that if, instead, a book had been found written in the best period of the Latin language for the amusement or instruction of youth, by some Roman De Foe, or Goldsmith, or Lamb, or Burnett, there would be ten times the reason for rejoicing. Unhappily there is no likelihood that we shall ever congratulate ourselves on such a "find," for probably no such work ever existed. What a misfortune that it did not occur to Cicero to divert himself in some leisure hour by writing a story for Roman youth! Millions of boys and girls in these later ages would have had good reason to bless his name. Caesar could have done it; but to him, too, the gods denied such an inspiration, and we must suffer for it. Seeing that he had composed a treatise on Latin Grammar, one almost wonders that a mind so original and fertile should not have conceived the idea of adapting his Gallic War, or some part of it, to the powers and comprehension of youth. What measureless gratitude would he not have won from unborn generations of schoolmasters, who have now to struggle desperately and often unavailingly to make clear to their pupils the meaning of his intricate periods, and untwist the strands of his knotty syntax! The categories and divisions arranged for classification are like the series of squares an artist places over a drawing to copy it by. The lines of the squares may cut the lines of the sketch; but they will cut them, not in reality but only in the artist's eye. In humanity, as in all of nature, the individual is the one thing. Only individuality exists in the realm of life and in the realm of Spirit. Individuality is not to be grouped or classified. Individual ity simply cannot fit into a pigeon-hole, and it is all the further from fitting if the pigeon-hole is shaped according to an ethical principle. Ethics is a poor tailor to clothe the body of reality. The ideas of the good, the logical, the just, the consistent, are too generic to be completely represented in nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere's Tragedy of Julius Caesar: Edited for School Use The text of this edition of Julius Caesar varies from that of the First Folio only where the latter seems clearly to be corrupt. In the punctuation of the text some approach has been made toward modern usage. The notes and other helps have been prepared with special reference to the requirements for entrance to the larger colleges, but they are not limited by such require ments. Effort has been made, in the Introduction, to give the student something of that sense of acquaintance with Shakspere, as aaman, which gives the true lover of the poet a personal interest in the plays and therefore a readier appreciation of them. The student has been aided, also, to get the poet's points of view. For, as Mr. Dowden observes, even Shakspere could not transcend himself; he had his points of view, not all of which were on Parnassus. One of them was in the audience for which he wrote. Always mindful of the ofi'ice receipts, the playwright habitually looked through the eyes of his Elizabethan playgoer, who, in turn, looked through the atmosphere of the times. It is desirable, therefore, to approach the reading of the play with a fresh sense of the conditions - within the playwright and without - that went to make it what it is.
