Book excerpt: Passive thin film waveguide components investigated under this contract were: 1) coupled waveguides, 2) waveguide lenses, 3) taper couplers, 4) waveguides with more or less rectangular cross sections. The coupling between waveguides was investigated in detail, both theoretically and experimentally. Methods for making 3-dB couplers and switches are described. Different experimental methods of making waveguide lenses were attempted; however, only two were found to be useful: one produces a lens with rectangular contours but thicker in the center and the other produces a round domed lens. Different tapers were investigated. It was found that a well-defined narrow output (input) angle can be obtained by using a very slow taper. Waveguides with trapezoidal cross sections were produced by sputter-etching of slab type waveguides using photoresist masks. The necessary patterns in these masks were made by exposing the photoresist pattern with a focused beam from a He-Cd laser operating at 4416A. (Author).

Book Synopsis Ferroelectric Thin-film Waveguides in Integrated Optics and Optoelectronics by : A. M. Prokhorov
Download or read book Ferroelectric Thin-film Waveguides in Integrated Optics and Optoelectronics written by A. M. Prokhorov and published by Cambridge International Science Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of producing thin-film structures are discussed. Special attention is given to liquid-phase epitaxy from a limited melt bulk with and without application of an electric field. A method is described which combines liquid-phase and diffusion techniques for obtaining structures with a specific configuration of waveguide channels. The physico-chemical properties of thin ferroelectric layers, such as morphology, the domain structure of the transition layer and ferroelectric properties are examined. Important role in applying electro-optic modulators, deflectors and transducers is played by optical properties, mode composition of propagating radiation, second harmonic generation, electro-optic properties, photorefraction, destruction threshold and light loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Waveguide Spectroscopy of Thin Films new methods of study of the linear and nonlinear optical properties of thin films are presented. These techniques are based on the principles of the spatial Fourier spectroscopy of the light beam reflected from a prism-coupling device with the tunnel excitation of guided lightmodes in thin-film structures. Measurement techniques of determination of the absorption coefficient, refractive index and thickness of the dielectric, semiconductor or metallic films are considered. This book is highly recommended for specialists in the fields of integrated and thin film optics and for graduated students in related specialties. There are new techniques of measurement of thin-film parameters stated

Book Synopsis Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides by : Xingcun Colin Tong Ph.D
Download or read book Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides written by Xingcun Colin Tong Ph.D and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to integrated optical waveguides for information technology and data communications. Integrated coverage ranges from advanced materials, fabrication, and characterization techniques to guidelines for design and simulation. A concluding chapter offers perspectives on likely future trends and challenges. The dramatic scaling down of feature sizes has driven exponential improvements in semiconductor productivity and performance in the past several decades. However, with the potential of gigascale integration, size reduction is approaching a physical limitation due to the negative impact on resistance and inductance of metal interconnects with current copper-trace based technology. Integrated optics provides a potentially lower-cost, higher performance alternative to electronics in optical communication systems. Optical interconnects, in which light can be generated, guided, modulated, amplified, and detected, can provide greater bandwidth, lower power consumption, decreased interconnect delays, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and reduced crosstalk when integrated into standard electronic circuits. Integrated waveguide optics represents a truly multidisciplinary field of science and engineering, with continued growth requiring new developments in modeling, further advances in materials science, and innovations in integration platforms. In addition, the processing and fabrication of these new devices must be optimized in conjunction with the development of accurate and precise characterization and testing methods. Students and professionals in materials science and engineering will find Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides to be an invaluable reference for meeting these research and development goals.
