Book excerpt: The Godmother of Silicon Valley, legendary teacher, and mother of a Super Family shares her tried-and-tested methods for raising happy, healthy, successful children using Trust, Respect, Independence, Collaboration, and Kindness: TRICK. Esther Wojcicki--"Woj" to her many friends and admirers--is famous for three things: teaching a high school class that has changed the lives of thousands of kids, inspiring Silicon Valley legends like Steve Jobs, and raising three daughters who have each become famously successful. What do these three accomplishments have in common? They're the result of TRICK, Woj's secret to raising successful people: Trust, Respect, Independence, Collaboration, and Kindness. Simple lessons, but the results are radical. Wojcicki's methods are the opposite of helicopter parenting. As we face an epidemic of parental anxiety, Woj is here to say: relax. Talk to infants as if they are adults. Allow teenagers to pick projects that relate to the real world and their own passions, and let them figure out how to complete them. Above all, let your child lead. How to Raise Successful People offers essential lessons for raising, educating, and managing people to their highest potential. Change your parenting, change the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential resource for transracially adoptive parents and the professionals who serve them, this book offers practical strategies for helping a transracially adopted child through the challenges he or she may face. Anchored in a qualitative study of parents who have adopted children identified as being of a different race, this book draws from real-life experiences to raise and respond to questions that arise before, during, and after transracial adoption. Its goal: to help adoptive parents (and child welfare professionals) understand the underlying racial challenges in a transracial adoption so they can help their children cope. The book addresses questions from the obvious—for example, how to respond to comments from family and community members—to the practical—how a Caucasian mother can learn to help her African American daughter groom her hair. Topics include parental understanding of race while growing up, parental understanding of the challenges within the community, and communicating within the adoptive family. The book also shares advice from practitioners about preparing and supporting families in transracial adoption. A highlight of this book is a chapter written by three adult adoptees who grew up within transracial families. Equipped with the information in this helpful volume, readers will be prepared to parent in ways that empower, rather than impede, their child's social, emotional, and identity development. This book will enable children welfare professionals to better help and support parents involved in these processes.

Book excerpt: A bad boy. A blast from the past. A very un-festive mistake. And a love so unexpected yet so strong, it makes Christmas Day look like a regular Sunday...right before someone goes off the cliff... Alright, it's a hot mess. I admit it. And right before Christmas, too. But I can't take any of it back. I mean, is it possible to have a midlife crisis in your thirties? But, despite all the errors in my judgment, Emmett's gaze still comes my way. Something in his eyes tells me that he isn't perfect, either. What I soon discover is that it was not he himself that made the mistakes, rather, he was the victim of someone else's errors in judgment. The question is, can he look beyond mine? *** It doesn't seem to matter how many times I tell myself that in my life, there is no room for relationships. Not one with a woman, anyway. The realization, for me, came at a painful price. That being said, I can't seem to tear myself away from the one woman that I should stay miles away from. Krissie has herself in some very hot water. And while that should be like kryptonite to me, it seems to have more of a magnetizing effect. I can't force her to choose. I've made my case quite clear. But when I witness a damning statement from someone that could change her life forever, I have to decide quickly if I'm going to be the one to tell her. And how can I do it, right before Christmas? Will it break her heart, or bring her closer to me? And just when I think that the answer is right in front of my face, it all comes crashing down... Crashing down a cliff, that is. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary college football coach and analyst, Lou Holtz once said: “When all is said and done, more is said than done.” These few, yet extremely profound words explain one of the biggest predicaments that individuals face today. Many of us say we want to be successful, happy and influential. Yet, very few of us follow up what we say—whether said to others or ourselves—with specific actions that move us directly toward those goals. The idea of being successful is an attractive dream that fills us with positive emotions. Whereas the actions required to be successful (at work, in our relationships, in sports competition, etc.) are often difficult and lengthy. So what do we need to bridge this gap between what we say we want, and what we must do to achieve it? We need goal-oriented motivation. This specific kind of motivation is the fuel that takes us across the long and often uncertain bridge to our desired destination in life. What would it mean to you to learn how to develop this kind of motivation on-demand, sustain this motivation through the difficult periods of life, and instill this motivation so intricately into your daily life that you make the very idea of motivation unnecessary? All of that and more is available to you in this cutting-edge, all new program from personal development expert and motivation master, Brian Tracy.

Book excerpt: There arent too many humans who go through their daily lives aware that there are two worlds here, the human existence and the Demons. Demon are everywhere, some even live amongst humans. There are only two species that are made, Vampire and Lamiahaem, the others, Jorgenhan, Changelings, Sirens, Casanovas, Witches and Warlocks are born or hatched, and they have normal life cycles. Magic plays a big part in our world, there are many humans who find that they can make things happen without being able to explain these happenings, the ones that are strong are generally found and recruited into our world, by the Guard. We had visited with many of these Witches and Warlocks. One family in particular always stood out, the Howard family. Their magic was powerful; nothing had ever measured up to them in all of my years. The matriarch of the family, decided not to join us, she stayed in the human world. Her granddaughters though we would watch from a distance. The Guard are soldiers for the Elders. There are seven Elders, in each sector, and there are three sectors, that keep the world covered. The reason there are seven is to ensure that all main Demons are represented. It is very rare that they ever get together, it has only happened once in my lifetime and that was in the very beginning when they first came to be. The Elders are our law; they are the ones who stop all unnecessary murders/slaughter being done to humans by our kind. They keep harmony. There is only one punishment, imprisonment followed by death. In our sector the lead Elder is my maker, my father, Elder Thomas Carter, he is a Lamiahaem. Lamiahaem are very passionate Demons, if we were not part of the Guard we would be living peacefully in our large family groups. Our species are not naturally aggressive, we have had to learn to adapt to a violent world. We are made and we make our partners, these are always humans that have magical gifts. When we meet that partner it is for life, this is natural for us. It is hard to explain the magnetic pull that you have when you first meet your mate; this love is also experienced by the human. There is only one mate for you, if that is denied you will recover and eventually meet another, but it can take some time. I have been Lamiahaem since 1554, my name is Simon. My father Thomas Carter lost his mate in a fight with vampire before he made me. He still cannot explain why he felt the need to change me, only to say that he noticed my gift of being able to feel illness and injuries and to know how to heal. Father believed that I would be useful to his world. We were in Newcastle in 1635, I was with the Guard. There were Renegade Vampire feeding off humans that had the plague, it appeared their affected blood was something like a drug to them. Even though these humans were going to die, we were still there to stop them from being slaughtered. That was when I seen the woman who would later become my wife, Julie, she had shoulder length light brown hair and sad brown eyes, the feelings I had were instant. Her eyes haunted me every second from the moment I seen her. It wasnt just sexual desire it was a desire to look after her, to be there for her, to never leave her. There were obstacles that I had to overcome, but in 1637, I made her my wife. After she was changed we discovered that Julie could sense feelings. My life now had purpose, she was everything, and she felt the same for me. Together we worked at healing both Demons and Humans. Normally that is where it would stop, we change our mate, but Julie and I were different. In 1665, the plague had hit London. The Vampire returned and so did the Guard. Julie had noticed a young man who was angry, lonely and deeply upset with himself. His family became ill with the plague, Julie and I nursed them until their eventual deaths. The young man, Jonathon became more emotional and was on a path of self destruction, he had an ability that he

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition captures the evolving, post-pandemic landscape of family policy—the transformational changes that have occurred within contemporary families and the social, economic, and racial/ethnic disparities that have grown across families. The book draws on policies from around the globe to make an evidence-based case for family policy and its contributions to families and to society. Bogenschneider tackles a significant challenge of our times—the polarization of politics—including why it occurs and how professionals can bridge the divide. Beyond the basics, the book provides best practices for turning analysis into action by drawing on cutting-edge research and a point of view often overlooked in policy books—the voice of policymakers themselves. Imbued with hope yet fundamentally realistic, Bogenschneider applies a relationship-based and strikingly nonpartisan approach for those who want to make a positive difference for families, whether they engage local policymakers in towns, cities and counties; state/national lawmakers; or decision-makers in businesses, nonprofits and philanthropy. Accompanied by updated, web-based teaching materials and a family impact toolkit, this is core reading for undergraduate and/or graduate courses in family or social policy taught in human development and family studies, psychology, counseling, social work, sociology, public policy, political science, and education. It is also essential reading for professionals and policymakers interested in pursuing better public policy for families in all their diversity across the lifespan.
