It was a joy to stroke the cat kins in their coats of silver-grey, or to touch the little downy birds in their nests, or to lie with long ing arms outstretched on the tender mosses of the roots of old trees. But best of all, perhaps, it was just to let the warm sunshine smile down, and the blue sky spread itself as a canopy above, while miracle was understood without even a sense of wonder, and good was the only natural law. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions at Issue The insecurity of contemporary criticism is no reason, however, why it should not be seriously and sincerely attempted. On the contrary, the critic who has been accustomed to follow paths where the laws and criteria of literature are paramount, may be glad to slip away sometimes to a freer country, where the art he tries to practise is more instinctive, more emotional, and more controversial. In the schools of antiquity, when the set discourse was over, the lecturer mingled with his audience under the portico of the Museum, and then, I suppose, it was not any longer of the ancients that they talked, but of the, poet of last night, and of the rhetorician of to-morrow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from People and Questions A book of essays, sketches and so forth which I had contributed to various reviews and journals. Perhaps a more fastidious taste has prevented my doing so for the last five years, since such a book is necessarily a medley. The stuff, however, even the stuff I thought worth keeping by me, has been growing and growing, and it is more agreeable to see a book on one's shelves than an awkward mass of cuttings in a drawer. Since the egotism is so obvious it would be futile to dissimulate it: the appeal of such a collection must be largely to one's vanity and a certain fatherly affection. Some appeal, however, there may be to those who have liked one's more coherent books, and some readers have been kind enough to tell me it was a pity not to give a chance of a little longer life to some of the papers I have the honour now to place before you. There is a medley of subjects, and since some of the essays are serious, and some fanciful, and some - What you please: I would not anticipate thecritics too much - there is much difference of manner also. I can only hope there is no change sudden and startling enough seriously to upset the reader. A large number of the things appeared in the Outlook, and I have also to make my acknow ledgments to the Quarterly Review, the Fort nightly Review, the English Review, the Morning Leader, the Illustrated London News, the Pall Mall Magazine, (for one little thing) to Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Questions "The Real Presence of Christ's most Blessed Body and Blood is not to be sought for in the Sacrament, but in the worthy receiver of the Sacrament." Richard Hooker. "Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them." - 2 Tim. iii. 14. The Sacramental teaching of the Church of England is definite and clear. It is not that of Rome. It is not that of Luther. It is not that commonly ascribed to Zwinglius. These views all are comparatively modern. Our Church's doctrine is "that which was from the beginning." It goes back to the institution of Christ and the teaching of the New Testament. To the Church, then, we appeal for an answer to the particular "Church question" before us to-day: Where, and when, and how, is the Body and Blood of Christ really present in the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper? In 1594, only twenty-three years after the final publication of the Thirty-nine Articles, the "judicious Hooker" answered the question thus: "The Real Presence of Christ's most Blessed Body and Blood is not to be sought for in the Sacrament, but in the worthy receiver of the Sacrament" ("Eccl. Pol.," V. Ixvii. 6). These words are clear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From principles which may be true and lofty in and by themselves, nay, just because they are so, it is easy to fall into theories and to become regularly entangled in them. And if what people say about stern principles cannot be wholly justified, since there is hardly any truth which has not presented its stern, repel Ient side to error and convenience, the case is different with regard to theories. Theories, however sure may be the principles on which they rest, are more or less subjective creations, which often look very startling from another person's subjective stand-point, and instead of winning people to the principles, often excite suspicion against them. Moreover, the more ideal their tendency, the more painful and irre concileable is the opposition in which they stand to reality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Questions of the Day The author of the following work has lived long enough in the world, to have observed, not without much reflexion, all those stirring events of the present century, which have chiefly influenced society as now existing. Looking back to the rapid flight of time past, and anticipating a yet more swift passing away of that which remains, he is anxious for the present to say a few words to the public, on subjects which are obviously and intimately connected with human welfare. For there are few thoughts that press with more painful weight upon his mind, in connexion with his expected departure hence, than the deep conviction, that no small part of the misery he must leave behind him in the world is easily preventible, and that yet little is done for its prevention.
