Most published histories of the small colored battalion from Rhode Island are clearly biased in favor of the “regiment” and tend to interpret it as an elite military unit. However, a detailed study and analysis of Rhode Island’s segregated Continental Line by the author reveals a “military experiment” that was beset with difficulties from its start and ultimately failed as a segregated unit in 1780. In this work, many of the popular stories of Rhode Island’s “Black Regiment” are proven to be myths. Follow the accurate historical stories of the colored and white soldiers of Rhode Island’s Continental Line whose courage and sacrifices helped create an independent nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Jerry Staub returns with his third collection of poems in "They Bravely Fought," honoring courageous Americans who served in combat, recounting some of the brave and heroic actions of those soldiers while recognizing some of the harsh realities that they, and many others, face during war. After introducing his theme with the poem "They Bravely Fought," Staub, recounts the especially tragic, and poignant, stories of men who were "The First and Last to Die in American Wars." He then explores his own mixed feelings about serving in a maintenance battalion and its rear echelon duty, supporting our combat troops, instead of serving on the front lines in the Vietnam War, in the poem "We Also Served." Combat in war is often thought of as a man's domain. Staub reminds us that women, too, have fought and sacrificed. In "She Bravely Serves," Staub salutes the women who currently and previously dedicated themselves to the armed forces during times of war. Staub focuses next on some renowned personalities whose actions during war have impacted many Americans during our history. Among them is General Robert E. Lee whose audacity and brilliant tactical maneuvers during the American Civil War almost won the war for the Confederacy. Then, in the narrative poem, "He Could Not See or Hear," he explores some of the events and misdeeds leading up to Colonel George A. Custer's devastating last stand at the Little Big Horn. The next sequence of poems in this collection focuses on the fact that the effects of war have never been limited to the battlefield; its physical, mental, and emotional wounds affect soldiers and their loved ones long after the battlefields have cleared, and the dead have been buried. Innocence is another casualty of war as many of us learned on a fateful September day in 2001. Staub recounts his memories while honoring the men and women who tragically lost their lives on that day in the poem "9-11: A Remembrance." Staub then addresses other realities of war such as, being surrounded by an overwhelming force in Iraq with little hope of reinforcements saving the day, a final reunion of two mortally wounded brothers just prior to their deaths during the Civil War, and the complete destruction of an entire village in Holland during World War II, prior to the Allied invasion into the German heartland. Next, he relates some other examples of war's casualties which many of us never consider, recounted in the poems, "Prisons Bleak and Gory," "The Ranch House Still Stands," and "In Fields Forever Staying." Finally, we are gravely reminded of war's final toll in the poignant poems, "Where Brave Soldiers Sleep" and "Remember Us." Staub has a deep and abiding respect for those who have answered the call to fight for our freedoms throughout history. Those who take up the mantle are our first heroes. However, the casualties of war begin on the battlefield and ripple out beyond the front lines and create heroes lesser known. The cost of war is borne by the soldiers on the front lines and the innocents at home, and they, each in their own way, bravely fought.

Book excerpt: First staged in Mumbai in 1991, Bravely Fought the Queen juggles between two spaces – centre stage where an empirical drama removes the mask of hypocrisy from a seemingly ‘normal’ urban household; and a small, rear backdrop from where emerges the raison d’être of each protagonist. The family in focus is that of two brothers, Jiten and Nitin, who run an advertising agency and are married to sisters: Dolly and Alka. Their mother, Baa, moves between the two households, attached more to her memories of the past than to any present reality. Marital friction, sibling rivalry, the traditional tension between mother-in-law and daughters-in-law, the darker moments of business and personal dealings, the play takes us through the entire gamut of emotional experience as it winds to a climactic finish. With its relentless pace, crisp idiom and unflinching insight into the urban milieu, this is a play that confirms Mahesh Dattani’s reputation as India’s most influential playwright.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General John A. Wickham, commander of the famous 101st Airborne Division in the 1970s and subsequently Army Chief of Staff, once visited Antietam battlefield. Gazing at Bloody Lane where, in 1862, several Union assaults were brutally repulsed before they finally broke through, he marveled, "You couldn't get American soldiers today to make an attack like that." Why did those men risk certain death, over and over again, through countless bloody battles and four long, awful years ? Why did the conventional wisdom -- that soldiers become increasingly cynical and disillusioned as war progresses -- not hold true in the Civil War? It is to this question--why did they fight--that James McPherson, America's preeminent Civil War historian, now turns his attention. He shows that, contrary to what many scholars believe, the soldiers of the Civil War remained powerfully convinced of the ideals for which they fought throughout the conflict. Motivated by duty and honor, and often by religious faith, these men wrote frequently of their firm belief in the cause for which they fought: the principles of liberty, freedom, justice, and patriotism. Soldiers on both sides harkened back to the Founding Fathers, and the ideals of the American Revolution. They fought to defend their country, either the Union--"the best Government ever made"--or the Confederate states, where their very homes and families were under siege. And they fought to defend their honor and manhood. "I should not lik to go home with the name of a couhard," one Massachusetts private wrote, and another private from Ohio said, "My wife would sooner hear of my death than my disgrace." Even after three years of bloody battles, more than half of the Union soldiers reenlisted voluntarily. "While duty calls me here and my country demands my services I should be willing to make the sacrifice," one man wrote to his protesting parents. And another soldier said simply, "I still love my country." McPherson draws on more than 25,000 letters and nearly 250 private diaries from men on both sides. Civil War soldiers were among the most literate soldiers in history, and most of them wrote home frequently, as it was the only way for them to keep in touch with homes that many of them had left for the first time in their lives. Significantly, their letters were also uncensored by military authorities, and are uniquely frank in their criticism and detailed in their reports of marches and battles, relations between officers and men, political debates, and morale. For Cause and Comrades lets these soldiers tell their own stories in their own words to create an account that is both deeply moving and far truer than most books on war. Battle Cry of Freedom, McPherson's Pulitzer Prize-winning account of the Civil War, was a national bestseller that Hugh Brogan, in The New York Times, called "history writing of the highest order." For Cause and Comrades deserves similar accolades, as McPherson's masterful prose and the soldiers' own words combine to create both an important book on an often-overlooked aspect of our bloody Civil War, and a powerfully moving account of the men who fought it.
