Book Synopsis A Continental View: Johannes Cocceius's Federal Theology of the Sabbath by : Casey B. Carmichael
Download or read book A Continental View: Johannes Cocceius's Federal Theology of the Sabbath written by Casey B. Carmichael and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carmichael argues that Johannes Cocceius's theology of the Sabbath serves as a window through which one can view more clearly his federal theology or covenant theology. Covenant theology was the most distinctive feature of his theology. Moreover, Cocceius spent a notable portion of his life engaging in the Leiden Sabbath Controversies from 1655 to 1659, which played a key role in the split of the Reformed Dutch Republic into two socio-political blocs—Cocceians and Voetians. So far scholars have tended to overlook this critical phase in Cocceius's theological development. Carmichael sheds light on it by looking at the theological texts that Cocceius wrote that absorbed his attention during this significant period. Casey Carmichael examines first the evolution of the problem of the Sabbath in Cocceius's theological tradition—Reformed Orthodoxy—in Chapters 2–4 and second the development of Cocceius's doctrine of the Sabbath, structured around the Leiden Sabbath Controversies, in Chapters 5–8.
Book Synopsis The Sabbath in the New Testament by : Samuele Bacchiocchi
Download or read book The Sabbath in the New Testament written by Samuele Bacchiocchi and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/sabbath_new_testament/ Many sincere Christians believe that the New Testament teaches that Christ brought to an end the principle and practice of Sabbath keeping, and instituted Sunday keeping instead. To test the validity of this popular view, Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi has devoted many years of painstaking research in Vatican libraries in Rome, examining the earliest Christian documents. The results of his investigation are found in his dissertation first published in 1977 by the Pontifical Gregorian University Press, in Rome, Italy. In the book The Sabbath in the New Testament Dr. Bacchiocchi summarizes and updates his extensive research by presenting four basic reasons for his belief in the permanence of the principle and practice of Sabbath keeping in the New Testament. These reasons are presented in a simple and clear way which ordinary people can understand. In the second half of the book Dr. Bacchiocchi answers a wide variety of questions people have often asked him in conjunction with his popular Lord's Day Seminar. The questions deal with historical, theological and practical aspects of Sabbath keeping. This section, entitled "Answers to Questions," makes the book a most valuable reference manual to deal with the most frequently asked questions about the Sabbath. To the delight of many the new and enlarged edition includes also a chapter prepared by Mrs. Bacchiocchi which contains a selection of 20 of her family's favorite Italian Sabbath recipes. - Preface; Part I: VIEWS ON THE SABBATH IN THE NEW TESTAMENT; 1. Widely known as one of the church’s most significant theologians, John Calvin was also a skilled preacher with the ability to proclaim biblical truth with power and relevance. These sermons develop the essence of his teaching on the moral law in a popular and engaging manner. Pastors preaching through the Ten Commandments, Bible students, and anyone interested in Calvin’s views on the Ten Commandments will take great delight in reading his exposition of the Decalogue, which is called “the true and eternal rule of righteousness [for all] who wish to conform their lives to God’s will.”
