Book excerpt: In this brilliant sequel to The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.—an enthralling, history-bending adventure traversing time and space, fact and fiction, magic and science co-written with #1 New York Times bestselling author Neal Stephenson—a daring young time traveler must return to Jacobean England to save the modern world. This fast-paced sequel to the New York Times bestselling near-future adventure The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. picks up where the original left off, as Tristan Lyons, Mel Stokes, and their fellow outcasts from the Department of Diachronic Operations (D.O.D.O.) fight to stop the powerful Irish witch Gráinne from using time travel to reverse the evolution of all modern technology. Chief amongst Gráinne’s plots: to encrypt cataclysmic spells into Shakespeare’s “cursed” play, Macbeth. When her fellow rogue agents fall victim to Gráinne’s schemes, Melisande Stokes is forced to send Tristan’s untested, wayward sister Robin back in time to 1606 London, where Edmund Tilney, the king’s Master of Revels, controls all staged performances in London. And now Gráinne controls Tilney. While Robin poses as an apprentice in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Mel travels to the ancient Roman Empire and, with the help of double-agent Chira in Renaissance Florence, untangles the knotted threads of history while the diabolical Gráinne jumps from timeline to timeline, always staying frustratingly one stop ahead—or is it behind? Historical objects disappear, cities literally rise and fall, and nothing less than the fate of humanity is at stake. As Gráinne sows chaos across time and space, the ragtag team of ex-D.O.D.O. agents must fix the past—in order to save the future. Critically acclaimed author Nicole Galland brings her deep knowledge of history and signature wit to this gripping romantic adventure.

But one day, when I let down my hair, the Witch wasn't the one to climb up. His presence was so overwhelming; his hands steady on my back, his lips and tongue marking me forever with the taste of a man. I was used to being alone a lot of the time, and wandering around the tower sort of aimlessly, trying to decide what to do once the chores were done. Now his mouth was telling me what to do and oh, it was good. Prince Dorin of Yirvagna, from the darkling lands, is tall and dark, with horns and a tail...and the first man I've ever seen in my life. He tells me I'm his bonded mate and I must come with him, and if I'm not so sure about this (admittedly charming) prince, the Witch's plans for me are worse. And when Prince Dorin stands in her way, her retaliation is swift. I taste freedom for the first time at the cost of Dorin's eyesight...but can I find a way to lift his curse? What will I find when I get there? A man who is cruelly cursed, haunted by a past misdeed? Or the man who will unlock all of my secret desires? It has been a long time since the Goblin King trusted anyone, but if he is willing to trust me, I might be able to save him and his people. "It's dangerous to feel too much in Never Land.” When I took Peter’s hand and flew with him to Never Land, escaping the fate of my overworked peasant mother, I thought it was a dream, but all I found was a cursed land. Peter expected me to tell stories and mend clothes all day like I was his mother, and at night, he cried out with nightmares. In Never Land, no one really grows up. At least, not on land. With my first womanly thought, I turned into a mermaid and Peter forgot my name. Yearning to escape, I was caught by the most dangerous man on the island—the very grown up, cruel pirate Captain Hook. I’m trapped in his chambers, and he makes me a very naughty bargain—but how long before that bargain becomes something more? Something that might destroy the secret that holds Never Land together and frees two lonely hearts? Captain Hook and the Mermaid is a fairy tale retelling for those who like an adorable happily ever after with a side of serious steaminess!

Book excerpt: “You will marry the very next man who walks in that door.” As the only princess of a prosperous kingdom, I have wanted for nothing—and refused all suitors. What real man is worthy of my interest, when I secretly pen tales of handsome lords and beautiful brooding counts? But now my father has gathered up every eligible royal bachelor in all the realm. And it’s just as I suspected, not one to capture my fancy—especially King Brennus of the Wood Elves, who looks like a bandit and has the accent of a man born in a barn. I’d rather be on my own forever. I refuse them all. The last thing I expected was for my mild-mannered father to insist, in a fit of anger, that I marry the next man who walks in the door, even if he’s a peasant…and what do you know? “No, lass. I won’t let you starve. But you won’t exactly be free either. And just remember, any time you like, you can stop me. All you have to do is work or beg.” My new husband looks like a laborer and lives in a little cabin in the forest, but something tells me he’s not what he seems. He says he means to teach me humility in the form of honest work, making stew and scrubbing floors. But somehow or other, he knows all my secrets, all the deepest desires of my heart, and there is no one in the forest to hear me beg him for mercy...except the wolvenfolk who howl in the forest at night. They haven’t made any trouble in fifty years, but when the wolves are at the door, I don’t know if a peasant can save me… The Beggar Princess is a retelling of the Brothers Grimm's King Thrushbeard, a standalone fairy tale romance for those who like unabashedly adorable happily ever afters with a side of serious steaminess!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Homilies of St. Chrysostom on St. Matthew were undoubtedly delivered at Antioch (see Hom. vii. p. 43) and probably in the latter part of the time during which he preached as a Presbyter. Montfaucon consideres his little mention of the sin of swearing a sign of his accomplished some reformation on that point by his previous exertions. In the Homilies delievered from 386 to 388, it is a constant topic; and the Homilies known to belong to that date are so numerous, as scarcely leave room for such a series as the present. These, however, contain very little to mark the period to which they belong. The argument from his reference to dissensions some time gone by, possible those between St. Meletius and Paulinus and Evagrius, in commenting on St. Matt. xxiii. 6. is not very conclusive. A modern reader must sometimes be struck with finding in St. Chrysostom a kind of criticism, which we are apt to thing belongs only to later times. Hist main object, however, is moral, and he searches out with diligence both the meaning and the applications of particular passages, usually concluding with an eloquent exhortation to some special virtue. Some of the most remarkable of these exhortations are on the subject of Alms-giving, which he seems to have pressed with some success at last. His calculation in Hom. lxvi as to what might be done, is somewhat curious. In the end of Hom. lxxxviii. he demands a reformation as the condition of his entering on the cntroversy with Infidels. In the next Homily he discusses the evidence of the Resurrection with nearly the same arguments as would still be used against an objector. This is volume two out of two, covering the homilies #XLII through #XC.

Book excerpt: He comes to me at night, in the darkness. The monster I was sworn to, against my will. By day, he is trapped in the form of a bear and cannot speak, cannot properly rule, but I know what he is: the King of the Northlands. The King of Trolls. He is under a curse, and he needs my help, but why should I help the brutish, dominating, barbarian king? I was meant for more than this; my father was a great mage but try as I might, I never had his talent for magic. Although he gave me everything I wanted, I know I'm a disappointment, and that's why I was thrown into this horrible position to save my kingdom from the Troll King's wrath. Although my dominating new husband has no patience for me when I try to act like a princess, and there is also a tender side to him. He's protective, massively strong, and has a strategic mind that I didn't expect. But he also has an enemy of his own that I didn't expect. The barbarian troll princess he once snubbed, who hates the "soft, pretty races" with a vengeance and cursed him with the form of a bear so he could never form a diplomatic alliance. If I want a happy marriage with my troll king, I'll have to break the curse--and much to my surprise, I think I do. Wed to the Troll King is a standalone fairy tale retelling of the East of the Sun, West of the Moon for those who like an unabashedly adorable happily ever after with a side of serious steaminess!
