Book excerpt: In support of the design of a nuclear waste repository in tuff, two dimensional thermal and thermal-mechanical analyses of horizontal emplacement boreholes were performed using finite-element and boundary-element codes. In the finite-element analyses five different equivalent continuum models of a tuff rock mass were used to investigate the state of deformation and stress around the borehole for times up to 300 years following waste emplacement. These models were an isotropic linear elastic model, an ubiquitous joint model also with single and orthogonal joints. The case of boreholes intersected by discrete fractures was analyzed using boundary-element models. The results of analyses using the various models of the borehole were consistent and indicated stable conditions even when low estimates of the strength of the joints within the tuff rock mass were assumed.

Book excerpt: In support of the investigations for an underground high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, we have performed computer simulations of the immediate thermal and hydrological environment around a nuclear waste package. Calculations of this type will be needed for waste package design, performance assessment, and radionuclide transport analyses. Two dimensional computer simulations using a modified version of the TOUGH code were run for an idealized configuration derived from the COVE3 benchmarking effort consisting of a single spent fuel waste package with laterally periodic boundary conditions. The model domain extended downward to the water table and upward to the ground level. Fluid behavior in the rock was modeled using the equivalent continuum approximation. Runs were made with surface water influx rates at the surface set to 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mm/yr. A significant amount of code modification and development was needed in order to develop the capability to run these types of problems out to the long time spans required.

Book excerpt: This study evaluates the cost and thermal effects of various waste package emplacement configurations that differ in emplacement orientation, number of containers per borehole, and standoff distance at the potential Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. In this study, eight additional alternatives to the vertical and horizontal orientation options presented in the Site Characterization Plan Conceptual Design Report are considered. Typical panel layout configurations based on thermal analysis of the waste and cost estimates for design and construction, operations, and closure and decommissioning were made for each emplacement option. For the thermal analysis average waste 10 years out of reactor and the SIM code were used to determine whether the various configurations temperatures would exceed the design criteria for temperature. This study does not make a recommendation for emplacement configuration, but does provide information for comparison of alternatives.

Book excerpt: This Retrieval Options Study is part of the systems analysis activities of the Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation to develop the scientific and technological bases for radioactive waste repositories in various geologic media. The study considers two waste forms, high level waste and spent fuel, and defines various classes of waste retrieval and recovery. A methodology and data base are developed which allow the relative evaluation of retrieval and recovery costs and the following technical criteria: safety; technical feasibility; ease of retrieval; probable intact retrieval time; safeguards; monitoring; criticality; and licensability. A total of 505 repository options are defined and the cost and technical criteria evaluated utilizing a combination of facts and engineering judgments. The repositories evaluated are selected combinations of the following parameters: Geologic Media (salt, granite, basalt, shale); Retrieval Time after Emplacement (5 and 25 years); Emplacement Design (nominal hole, large hole, carbon steel canister, corrosion resistant canister, backfill in hole, nominal sleeves, thick wall sleeves); Emplacement Configuration (single vertical, multiple vertical, single horizontal, multiple horizontal, vaults; Thermal Considerations; (normal design, reduced density, once-through ventilation, recirculated ventilation); Room Backfill; (none, run-of-mine, early, 5 year delay, 25 year delay, decommissioned); and Rate of Retrieval; (same as emplacement, variably slower depending on repository/canister condition).

Book excerpt: The Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project is investigating the feasibility of locating a high level radioactive nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The bore hole and the in-drift waste emplacement schemes are under evaluation as potential repository drift geometries. This paper presents a two-dimensional finite element thermal analysis of the nuclear waste canister placed horizontally in a drift. Simulation has been carried out for 1000 years and the peak temperatures at the walls of the drift and at the center of the canister have been determined. The effect of the three modes of heat transfer, conduction, natural convection and radiation, is also discussed.

Book excerpt: The drift of a High Level Nuclear Waste (HLNW) Repository were subjected to 2-D thermal loading resulting from the horizontal emplacement of 125 Ton Multi-Purpose Canisters (MPC). Ten 2-D temperature profiles, resulting from 57 Kw/acre and 114 Kw/acre thermal loading conditions, were used in a finite element analysis of the drift; in which a quadrant of the drift and surrounding rock "100m above and below the drift were modeled. Our analysis shows that the 114 Kw/acre thermal loading results in compressive stresses around the drift, 60 years after emplacement, that exceed the unconfined compressive strength of the TSW tuff analyzed. Stresses resulting from a 57 Kw/acre thermal loading are within the acceptable limit in tunnel rock. A parametric analysis of the invert backfill material showed that Young's modulus for the invert backfill should closely match that of the surrounding unconfined rock in the tunnel in order to prevent an unacceptable stress rise in both rock and backfill.
