Download or read book Entropy Demystified written by Arieh Ben-Naim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique book, the reader is invited to experience the joy of appreciating something which has eluded understanding for many years OCo entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The book has a two-pronged message: first, that the second law is not infinitely incomprehensible as commonly stated in most textbooks on thermodynamics, but can, in fact, be comprehended through sheer common sense; and second, that entropy is not a mysterious quantity that has resisted understanding but a simple, familiar and easily comprehensible concept.Written in an accessible style, the book guides the reader through an abundance of dice games and examples from everyday life. The author paves the way for readers to discover for themselves what entropy is, how it changes, and, most importantly, why it always changes in one direction in a spontaneous process. In this new edition, seven simulated games are included so that the reader can actually experiment with the games described in the book. These simulated games are meant to enhance the readers'' understanding and sense of joy upon discovering the Second Law of Thermodynamics."

Book Synopsis Teaching Thermodynamics by : Jeffrey D. Lewins
Download or read book Teaching Thermodynamics written by Jeffrey D. Lewins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seemed appropriate to arrange a meeting of teachers of thermodynamics in the United Kingdom, a meeting held in the pleasant surroundings of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in Sept~mber, 1984. This volume records the ideas put forward by authors, the discussion generated and an account of the action that discussion has initiated. Emphasis was placed on the Teaching of Thermodynamics to degree-level students in their first and second years. The meeting, a workshop for practitioners in which all were expected to take part, was remarkably well supported. This was notable in the representation of essentially every UK university and polytechnic engaged in teaching engineering thermodynamics and has led to a stimulating spread of ideas. By intention, the emphasis for attendance was put on teachers of engineering concerned with thermodynamics, both mechanical and chemical engineering disciplines. Attendance from others was encouraged but limited as follows: non-engineering acad emics, 10%, industrialists, 10%. The record of attendance, which will also provide addresses for direct correspondance, will show the broad cover achieved. I am indeed grateful for the attendance of those outside the engineering departments who in many cases brought a refreshing approach to discussions of the 'how' and 'why' of teaching thermodynamics. It was also notable that many of those speaking from the polytechnics had a more original approach to the teaching of thermodynamics than those from conventional universities. The Open University however brought their own special experience to bear.

Book Synopsis Carnot Cycle and Heat Engine Fundamentals and Applications by : Michel Feidt
Download or read book Carnot Cycle and Heat Engine Fundamentals and Applications written by Michel Feidt and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-07-03 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book results from a Special Issue related to the latest progress in the thermodynamics of machines systems and processes since the premonitory work of Carnot. Carnot invented his famous cycle and generalized the efficiency concept for thermo-mechanical engines. Since that time, research progressed from the equilibrium approach to the irreversible situation that represents the general case. This book illustrates the present state-of-the-art advances after one or two centuries of consideration regarding applications and fundamental aspects. The research is moving fast in the direction of economic and environmental aspects. This will probably continue during the coming years. This book mainly highlights the recent focus on the maximum power of engines, as well as the corresponding first law efficiency upper bounds.

Book Synopsis Discover Entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics by : Arieh Ben-Naim
Download or read book Discover Entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics written by Arieh Ben-Naim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a sequel to the author’s book entitled “Entropy Demystified.” The aim is essentially the same as that of the previous book by the author: to present Entropy and the Second Law as simple, meaningful and comprehensible concepts. In addition, this book presents a series of “experiments” which are designed to help the reader discover entropy and the Second Law. While doing the experiments, the reader will encounter no unexpected results, and concepts of entropy and the Second Law will emerge naturally from these experiments without a tinge of mystery. These concepts are explained with the help of a few familiar ideas of probability and a 20-question game. The main “value” of the book is to introduce entropy and the Second Law in simple language which renders it accessible to any reader who can read and is curious about the basic laws of nature. The book is addressed to anyone interested in science and in understanding natural phenomenon. It will give the reader the opportunity to discover one of the most fundamental laws of physics — a law that has resisted complete understanding for over a century. The book is also designed to be enjoyable. There is no other book of its kind (except “Entropy Demystified” by the same author) that offers the reader a unique opportunity to discover one of the most profound laws — sometimes viewed as a mysterious law — without the tinge mystery. There are no pre-requisites expected of the readers; all that the reader is expected to do is to follow the experiments or imagine doing the experiments and reach the inevitable conclusions.
