Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Thermodynamics for Engineers The vital problem of the day in mechanical engineering is that of the prime mover. Is the steam engine, the gas engine, or the turbine to survive? The internal combustion engine works with the wide range of temperature shown by Carnot to be desirable; but practically its superiority in efficiency is less marked than its temperature range should warrant. In most forms, its entire charge, and in all forms, the greater part of its charge, must be compressed by a separate and thermally wasteful operation. By using liquid or solid fuel, this complication may be limited so as to apply to the air supply only; but as this air supply constitutes the greater part of the combustible mixture, the difficulties remain serious, and there is no present means available for supplying oxygen in liquid or solid form so as to wholly avoid the necessity for compression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thermodynamics Applied to Engineering The purpose of this text is to present the principles of engineering thermodynamics in the simplest fashion, and to illuminate these conceptions by reference to the best British and American practice in the major fields of their application. In the selection of examples for illustration stress has been laid on recent developments likely to make a strong imaginative appeal on account of their unusual interest. The standard of the work is that which is characteristic of University degree requirements on both sides of the Atlantic, and it is hoped that there will be a welcome both in America and Great Britain. Both as a student and teacher, the author is indebted to Sir J. A. Ewing's lucid exposition of this subject. Thanks are also due to Professor William J. Goudie for suggestions in reference to the determination of the resultant pressure on turbine blading; to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London, for permission to use information contained in original papers by members; and to the various firms who have readily supplied information concerning their products. Mr. J. C. MacLagan, designer of the North British double-acting two-cycle Diesel engine, and his firm were particularly helpful in this respect. To some extent, it has been simplified by planning the problems for easy solution. The table preceding Chapter II will be found useful for exponential expressions. The solution of many problems is necessary in order that a real grasp of the subject may be attained. All problems should be solved with the slide rule. This implies that answers will be absolutely reliable only with respect to two significant figures, the third figure being estimated. An error which may be as high as 1 per cent. Is therefore allow able. The answers given have been obtained by slide rule, and are subject to this error. Other errors may occasionally be found during a first year's use of the book. The student's answer may be right, therefore, even when it disagrees with the answer in the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Thermodynamics For years there has been an important demand for a text book on thermodynamics which would be brief and concise, but. At the same time so clearly written as regards explanation that students of average ability in our large technical schools could read it without difficulty. A professor of thermodynamics wrote recently as follows: I like the idea of making the text largely self-explanatory. T 00 many books require the reading of several lines between every two lines of the text. This book has been prepared to meet this demand and in writing it the authors have kept in mind these requirements. Further, it has been the idea of the authors to make this book particularly suitable for use in the larger technical schools where it is possible to give special courses on the subjects of steam turbines, pneumatic machinery, internal combustion engines, refrigeration and pumping ma chinery. Usually in the courses on these subjects the advanced and special theory of thermodynamics as it relates to each of them is taken up with completeness. At present there is too much duplication of subject matter in the large volumes on thermodynamics now available, which are made to include the descriptive matter and the applications of these special subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Thermodynamics: For Engineering Students This book is the outcome of the writer's desire to put into the hands of a class, studying introductory thermodynamics, in a concise form a statement of those principles and concepts which are essential to the study of the construction and operation of steam engines, steam turbines, and their auxiliaries, and, to a more limited extent, of air compressors and gas engines. The book deals only with the ideal and limiting cases, and aims only at a preparation of the student for reading the more advanced technical works or papers. As such the text makes no claim to originality except, to some extent, in the selection and arrangement of material and in the location of the emphasis. The material selected is from such sources as the works and books of Clausius, Rankine, Carnot, Kelvin, Stodola, Pellat, Planck, Preston, Edser, Bryan, Boulvin, Swinburne, Peabody, and Buckingham. The arrangement is intended to lead the student from the sophomore physics work into thermodynamics as a continuation and more detailed study of a portion of physical science already somewhat familiar. The emphasis is therefore placed upon the physical concepts, and constant reference is made to the molecular kinetic theory, which is usually familiar to such a student. Although an effort has been made to eliminate as far as practicable the use and solution of differential equations, it is hoped that should the book be used by a student who later takes up the study of pure thermodynamics, he will have little if anything to unlearn and will find the physical interpretation of the mathematical relations rendered easier. The emphasis is also placed upon the solution of numerical problems, many examples of which are given. These in general are arranged to lead from the simpler concepts to the ideal limiting cases of the applications to engineering problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Thermodynamic Tables and Diagrams: A Selection of Tables and Diagrams From Engineering Thermodynamics Time is an important item in all engineering work and none the less so in computations, so that convenient tables and diagrams are most essential to the solution of such problems. In some cases graphic methods are the only means of solution; in others the problems may be solved directly without the use of formulas, and in still others certain steps may be Shortened. In many engineering calculations no one is justified in using a complicated mathematical formula; if too much time be required to make the calculation in commercial work it will not be made, therefore indirect and often approximate methods are substituted. In such cases the nearest tabular or chart value must be used, and generally the result will be as accurate as the work requires. In the following tables and charts the accompanying title usually, indi cates the character of each table or diagram and little explanation is necessary. The tables for dry saturated steam, and properties of superheated steam are those of Marks and Davis. From the investigation made by Marks and Davis it is believed that the properties of saturated steam given in the tables are correct to within one-tenth of 1 per cent. For pressures within the range of ordinary engineering practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Many students have difficulty with thermodynamics, and find at some stage of their careers in academia or industry that they have forgotten what they learned, or never really understood these fundamental physical laws. As the title of the book suggests, the author has distilled the subject down to its essentials, using many simple and clear illustrations, instructive examples, and key equations and simple derivations to elucidate concepts. Based on many years of teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels, “Essential Classical Thermodynamics” is intended to provide a positive learning experience, and to empower the reader to explore the many possibilities for applying thermodynamics in other fields of science, engineering, and even economics where energy plays a central role. Thermodynamics is fun when you understand it!
