Book Synopsis Elements of Chemical Thermodynamics by : Leonard K. Nash
Download or read book Elements of Chemical Thermodynamics written by Leonard K. Nash and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text addresses the use of purely thermal data in calculating the position of equilibrium in a chemical reaction. Its argument highlights the physical content of thermodynamics, as distinct from purely mathematical aspects. Methods are limited to a very few of the most elementary operations of the calculus, all of which are explained in an appendix. Readers need no more than a sound background in high school mathematics and physics, as well as some familiarity with the leading quantitative concepts of an introductory college chemistry course. An introduction establishes the fundamentals of temperature, heat and work, reversibility, and pressure-volume work. The first principle of thermodynamics is explored in terms of energy, enthalpy, thermochemistry and Hess's Law, heat capacity, Kirchhoff's equations, and adiabatic processes. Considerations of the second principle of thermodynamics encompass the Carnot cycle, the concept of entropy, and evaluation of entropy changes. The consequences of thermodynamic principles are examined in chapters on the free energies, the Clapeyron equation, ideal solutions and colligative properties, and the equilibrium state and equilibrium constant. Numerous problems appear throughout the text, in addition to 30 fully worked illustrative examples.

Book Synopsis Basic Chemical Thermodynamics by : Eric Brian Smith
Download or read book Basic Chemical Thermodynamics written by Eric Brian Smith and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This widely acclaimed text, now in its fifth edition and translated into many languages, continues to present a clear, simple and concise introduction to chemical thermodynamics. An examination of equilibrium in the everyday world of mechanical objects provides the starting point for an accessible account of the factors that determine equilibrium in chemical systems. This straightforward approach leads students to a thorough understanding of the basic principles of thermodynamics, which are then applied to a wide range of physico-chemical systems. The book also discusses the problems of non-ideal solutions and the concept of activity, and provides an introduction to the molecular basis of thermodynamics.Over five editions, the views of teachers of the subject and their students have been incorporated. The result is a little more rigour in specifying the dimensions within logarithmic expressions, the addition of more worked examples and the inclusion of a simple treatment of the molecular basis of thermodynamics. Students on courses in thermodynamics will continue to find this popular book an excellent introductory text.

Book excerpt: Comprises 20 contributions which grew from the August 1996 symposium. Representative paper topics include estimating phase- change enthalpies and entropies, electrostatic-covalent model parameters for molecular modeling, complete basis-set thermochemistry and kinetics, modeling free energies of solvation and transfer, use of density functional methods to compute heats of reaction, and a density functional study of periodic trends in bond energies. Together the contributions describe all the major methods used for estimating or predicting molecular thermochemistry. Appends information on software and databases for thermochemistry, essential statistical thermodynamics, and worked examples. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Synopsis Materials Thermochemistry by : Oswald Kubaschewski
Download or read book Materials Thermochemistry written by Oswald Kubaschewski and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1993 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials Thermochemistry, the 6th Edition of Metallurgical Thermochemistry, aims to demonstrate the central role of thermochemistry in the understanding and designing of materials and materials processes. Extensively revised and up-dated, the 6th Edition of this classic work includes all the latest developments in experimental methods, new methods for estimating thermochemical data for both pure and alloy substances, new practical applications of thermochemical calculations, and up-dated tables of critically evaluated thermochemical data for inorganic substances and binary alloy systems. The basic principles of chemical thermodynamics are presented in a straightforward way with many examples of the use of thermochemical calculations in solving a variety of materials' problems. Although thermodynamics is an established field, this 6th Edition presents the newest experimental methods and calculations of complex equilibria associated with the most recent materials and environmental considerations (e.g. environmental pollution). This text is suitable for graduates and undergraduates alike and provides basic information necessary for researchers to apply thermochemical principles and data to the optimization of materials and materials processes.
Book Synopsis Chemical Thermodynamics by : Byung Chan Eu
Download or read book Chemical Thermodynamics written by Byung Chan Eu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamics is an ever evolving subject. This book aims to introduce to advanced undergraduate students and graduate students the fundamental ideas and notions of the first and second laws of thermodynamics in a manner unavailable in the usual textbooks on the subject of thermodynamics. For example, it treats the notions of unavailable work, compensated and uncompensated heats, and dissipation, which make it possible to formulate the thermodynamic laws in more broadened forms than those in the conventional treatment of equilibrium thermodynamics. It thus strives to prepare students for more advanced subjects of irreversible processes, which are encountered in our everyday scientific activities. In addition, it also aims to provide them with functional and practical knowledge of equilibrium chemical thermodynamics of reversible processes in real fluids. It discusses temperature, work and heat, thermodynamic laws, equilibrium conditions and thermodynamic stability, thermodynamics of reversible processes in gases and liquids, in surfaces, chemical equilibria, reversible processes in electrolyte solutions and dielectrics in static electric and magnetic fields. A couple of examples for irreversible processes associated with fluid flows and chemical pattern formation and wave propagations are discussed as examples for applications of broader treatments of the thermodynamic laws in the realm of irreversible phenomena.
