Book Synopsis Thermal Properties and Temperature-Related Behavior of Rock/Fluid Systems by : W.H. Somerton
Download or read book Thermal Properties and Temperature-Related Behavior of Rock/Fluid Systems written by W.H. Somerton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-03-02 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together for the first time the results of research on the thermal properties and temperature-related behavior of rocks with their contained fluids, under subsurface environmental conditions. These data are of increasing importance with increased application of underground processes involving high temperature and, in some cases, low temperature environments. Some of the important processes are described in which thermal data are needed. Chapters deal with thermal properties of rocks, including heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities under conditions simulating subsurface environments. Discussion about the difficulty in measuring thermal properties of rock/fluid systems is included along with newly-developed models for predicting thermal properties from more-easily measured properties. The effects of thermal reactions in rocks, differential thermal expansion, and thermal alterations are discussed in separate chapters. The effects of temperature on rock properties, as distinct from the irreversible effects of heating, are reviewed. Lastly the book deals with wellbore applications of thermal and high-temperature behavior of rocks and methods of deducing thermal properties from geophysical logs run in boreholes. Appendices include thermal units conversion factors and thermal properties of some typical reservoir rocks and fluids.
Book Synopsis Thermophysical Properties of Selected Rocks by : Pramond D. Desai
Download or read book Thermophysical Properties of Selected Rocks written by Pramond D. Desai and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the available experimental data on four thermophysical properties of twelve rock types and also gives selected values for fifteen specific rock materials identified by geologic formation or geographic location. Sufficient specimen characterization and measurement information are provided to permit meaningful data evaluation and correlation. In addition, petrographic description of the individual rock types and the specific rock material are also included. The fifteen specific rock materials constitute the ARPA and NASA suites of rocks, and the four thermophysical properties are thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, thermal linear expansion, and specific heat. The property data are extracted from 95 data source references covering the publication years from 1920 to 1972 and are presented in both graphical and tabular formats usually as a function fo temperature. In some cases, however, data as a function of pressure or saturation are also given. (Author).
Book Synopsis Large Igneous Provinces from Gondwana and Adjacent Regions by : S. Sensarma
Download or read book Large Igneous Provinces from Gondwana and Adjacent Regions written by S. Sensarma and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gondwana, comprising more than 64% of the present day continental mass, is home to 33% of large igneous provinces (LIPs) and key to understanding the lithosphere–atmosphere system and related tectonics that influenced global climate and sediment production on Earth. Gondwana has many of the largest LIPs, with areas of 200 000 to 2 000 000 km2. Several Gondwana LIPs erupted near active continental margins as well as within continents. The rifting of continents continued even after LIP emplacement or was aborted by a coeval compression and did not open into an ocean. Important contemporary frontiers include understanding significant amounts of synchronous silicic volcanic rocks in mafic LIPs, bringing better stratigraphic constraints supported by precise age dating and volume estimation of LIPs, the possible link between LIP emplacement and biotic crisis, refinement of the existing petrogenetic models and assessing large eruptions and associated societal risk. This volume covers topics on magma emplacements, petrology and geochemistry, source characteristics, flood basalt–carbonatite linkage, tectonics and geochronology of LIPs distributed in Gondwana continents.
Book Synopsis Feldspars and their Reactions by : Ian Parsons
Download or read book Feldspars and their Reactions written by Ian Parsons and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feldspar minerals make up 60% of the crust of the Earth. They are stable in the upper mantle, and are so abundant in the crust that they form the basis of the classification of igneous rocks. At the surface, feldspars weather to form clay minerals which are the most important mineral constituent of soils. The articles in this book review the chemical reactions of feldspars over the whole sweep of pressure and temperature regimes in the outer Earth, and describe the fundamental aspects of crystal structure which underlie their properties. The book covers intracrystalline reactions, such as order-disorder transformations and exsolution, and transfer of stable and radiogenic isotopes, which can be interpreted to provide insights into the thermal history of rocks. It is suitable for final year undergraduates or research workers.

Book Synopsis Feldspar Minerals by : Joseph V. Smith
Download or read book Feldspar Minerals written by Joseph V. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarks by JVS. Volumes 1 and 2 of Feldspar Minerals were published in 1974, but Volume 3 was not completed because I was forced to devote 3 years to the resolution of unforeseen problems in the construction of an ion probe. By 1977, the incomplete draft for Volume 3 had become obsolete because of the enormous advances in knowledge of feldspars, particularly those in lunar rocks and meteorites, and in both deep-seated and ancient terrestrial rocks. Furthermore, it soon became obvious that a completely new version of Feldspar Minerals was needed because of the important new results on the physical and chemical properties. I had kept up with the interesting but tedious chore of weekly reading of the incoming literature and maintenance of the files. By 1980, the intense day-to day pressure had gone from my research programs on lunar rocks and on the development of the ion microprobe as a quantitative geochemical instrument, and I began preparation of a second edition of Feldspar Minerals.

Download or read book Impact Cratering written by G. R. Osinski and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impact cratering is arguably the most ubiquitous geological process in the Solar System. It has played an important role in Earth’s history, shaping the geological landscape, affecting the evolution of life, and generating economic resources. However, it was only in the latter half of the 20th century that the importance of impact cratering as a geological process was recognized and only during the past couple of decades that the study of meteorite impact structures has moved into the mainstream. This book seeks to fill a critical gap in the literature by providing an overview text covering broad aspects of the impact cratering process and aimed at graduate students, professionals and researchers alike. It introduces readers to the threat and nature of impactors, the impact cratering process, the products, and the effects – both destructive and beneficial. A series of chapters on the various techniques used to study impact craters provide a foundation for anyone studying impact craters for the first time.
