Book excerpt: In fabrication of nanoparticle-reinforced polymers, two critical factors need to be taken into account to control properties of the final product; nanoparticle dispersion/distribution in the matrix; and interfacial interactions between nanoparticles and their surrounding matrix. The focus of this thesis was to examine the role of these two factors through experimental methodologies and molecular-level simulations. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and vinyl ester (VE) resin were used as nanoparticles and matrix, respectively. In a parametric study, a series of CNT/VE nanocomposites with different CNT dispersion conditions were fabricated using the ultrasonication mixing method. Thermomechanical properties of nanocomposites and quality of CNT dispersion were evaluated. By correlation between nanocomposite behavior and CNT dispersion, a thermomechanical model was suggested; at a certain threshold level of sonication energy, CNT vii dispersion would be optimal and result in maximum enhancement in properties. This threshold energy level is also related to particle concentration. Sonication above this threshold level, leads to destruction of nanotubes and renders a negative effect on the properties of nanocomposites. In an attempt to examine the interface condition, a novel process was developed to modify CNT surface with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). In this process, a chemical reaction was allowed to occur between CNTs and POSS in the presence of an effective catalyst. The functionalized CNTs were characterized using TEM, SEM-EDS, AFM, TGA, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Formation of amide bonds between POSS and nanotubes was established and verified. Surface modification of CNTs with POSS resulted in significant improvement in nanotube dispersion. In-depth SEM analysis revealed formation of a 3D network of well-dispersed CNTs with POSS connections to the polymer. In parallel, molecular dynamics simulation of CNT-POSS/VE system showed an effective load transfer from polymer chains to the CNT due to POSS linkages at the interface. The rigid and flexible network of CNTs is found to be responsible for enhancement in elastic modulus, strength, fracture toughness and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the final nanocomposites.

Book excerpt: The present work provides a micromechanics approach based on the generalized self-consistent composite cylinders method as a non-Eshelby approach towards for assessing the impact of carbon nanotubes on the multi-functional nature of nanocom-posites in which they are a constituent. Emphasis is placed on the effective elastic properties as well as electrical and thermal conductivities of nanocomposites con-sisting of randomly oriented single walled carbon nanotubes in epoxy. The effective elastic properties of aligned, as well as clustered and well-dispersed nanotubes in epoxy are discussed in the context of nanotube bundles using both the generalized self-consistent composite cylinders method as well as using computational microme-chanics techniques. In addition, interphase regions are introduced into the composite cylinders assemblages to account for the varying degrees of load transfer between nanotubes and the epoxy as a result of functionalization or lack thereof. Model pre-dictions for randomly oriented nanotubes both with and without interphase regions are compared to measured data from the literature with emphasis placed on assessing the bounds of the effective nanocomposite properties based on the uncertainty in the model input parameters. The generalized self-consistent composite cylinders model is also applied to model the electrical and thermal conductivity of carbon nanotube-epoxy nanocomposites. Recent experimental observations of the electrical conductivity of carbon nanotube polymer composites have identifed extremely low percolation limits as well as a per-ceived double percolation behavior. Explanations for the extremely low percolation limit for the electrical conductivity of these nanocomposites have included both the creation of conductive networks of nanotubes within the matrix and quantum effects such as electron hopping or tunneling. Measurements of the thermal conductivity have also shown a strong dependence on nanoscale effects. However, in contrast, these nanoscale effects strongly limit the ability of the nanotubes to increase the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite due to the formation of an interfacial thermal resistance layer between the nanotubes and the surrounding polymer. As such, emphasis is placed here on the incorporation of nanoscale effects, such as elec-tron hopping and interfacial thermal resistance, into the generalized self-consistent composite cylinder micromechanics model.

However, the effect of nanotube on macroscopic properties of composites remains less understood. The underlying challenge is to characterize the complex interaction between nanotubes and the surrounding matrix which can depend on the interfacial strength of the nanotube and its diameter, as well as various scale-dependent mechanisms. ☐ To address the challenge, this thesis develops a multiscale approach. The approach integrates simulations with density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD), and the finite element (FE) method. DFT is used to compute fundamental material properties, MD to study sub-micron scale deformation mechanisms, and FEM to study longer length scale behavior. We also compare the FEM results with the MD results. The entire investigation has two parts: (a) investigation of interfacial strength, and (b) investigation of nanotube diameters, with a focus on their effects on macroscopic properties. For carrying out the investigations, we take silica (SiO2) as an example matrix material (due to its many critical applications) and explore the effect of nanotube reinforcement on stiffness, strength and toughness of CNT-SiO2 nanocomposites. ☐ For the interfacial strength study, the results show that nanotube delaminates when the interfacial strength is low enough and it fractures when the interfacial strength is high. The delamination process can therefore play a significant role in controlling the effective fracture strength and toughness of the CNT-SiO2 nanocomposites. The condition for delimination is governed by an intricate site-dependent interaction between the nanotube and the SiO2 matrix. Nonetheless, increasing interfacial strength improves the effective properties substantially. For example, a two-fold increase in interfacial strength increases effective strength by more than 7% and effective toughness by more than 16%. The overall influence is however non-linear, and there is a corresponding mathematical relationship between the interfacial strength and effective strength or toughness. Additionally, we find that increasing nanotube diameter decreases stiffness and strength, but its effect on toughness is difficult to quantify. ☐ Incorporating the atomistic information in a finite element based continuum framework, it is found that the macroscopic stress-strain response of a hole-SiO2 nanostructure is inconsistent with the corresponding stress-strain response in MD simulation, although the bulk material properties in the finite element calculation are taken from the MD simulation. Therefore, this thesis concludes that developing multiscale computational approach is necessary to determine the stress-strain behavior of composites accurately as well as to predict the implication of nanostructure-reinforcement on macroscopic or effective properties of the nanocomposite.
